Pfefferlea aYale University, Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, New Haven CT 06520 bNational Renewable Energy Laboratory, Golden CO 80401 Abstract Soot from internal combustion engines negatively affects health and climate. Soot emissions might be reduced through the expanded usage of appropriate biomass-derived fuels. Databases of sooting indices, based on measuring some aspect of sooting behavior in a standardized combustion environment, are useful in providing information on the comparative sooting tendencies of different fuels or pure compounds. However, newer biofuels have varied chemical structures including both aromatic and oxygenated functional groups, making an accurate measurement or prediction of their sooting tendency difficult. In this work, we propose a unified sooting tendency database for pure compounds, including both regular and oxygenated hydrocarbons, which is based on combining two disparate databases of yield-based sooting tendency measurements in the literature. Unification of the different databases was made possible by leveraging the greater dynamic range of the color ratio pyrometry soot diagnostic. This unified database contains a substantial number of pure compounds (≥ 400 total) from multiple categories of hydrocarbons important in modern fuels and establishes the sooting tendencies of aromatic and oxygenated hydrocarbons on the same numeric scale for the first time. Using this unified sooting tendency database, we have developed a predictive model for sooting behavior applicable to a broad range of hydrocarbons and oxygenated hydrocarbons. The model decomposes each compound into single-carbon fragments and assigns a sooting tendency contribution to each fragment based on regression against the unified database. -

In this study, we concentrate on how these three ideas have eventually defined the chemical equilibrium concept. To this end, we analyse the contexts of scientific inquiry that have allowed the growth of chemical equilibrium from the first ideas of chemical affinity. At the beginning of the 18th century, chemists began the construction of different affinity tables, based on the concept of elective affinities. Berthollet reworked this idea, considering that the amount of the substances involved in a reaction was a key factor accounting for the chemical forces. Guldberg and Waage attempted to measure those forces, formulating the first affinity mathematical equations. Finally, the first ideas providing a molecular interpretation of the macroscopic properties of equilibrium reactions were presented. A Kinetics Experiment The Rate of a Chemical Reaction: A Clock Reaction Andrea Deoudes February 2, 2010 Introduction: The rates of chemical reactions and the ability to control those rates are crucial aspects of life. Chemical kinetics is the study of the rates at which chemical reactions occur, the factors that affect the speed of reactions, and the mechanisms by which reactions proceed. The reaction rate depends on the reactants, the concentrations of the reactants, the temperature at which the reaction takes place, and any catalysts or inhibitors that affect the reaction. If a chemical reaction has a fast rate, a large portion of the molecules react to form products in a given time period. If a chemical reaction has a slow rate, a small portion of molecules react to form products in a given time period. This experiment studied the kinetics of a reaction between an iodide ion (I-1) and a -2 -1 -2 -2 peroxydisulfate ion (S2O8 ) in the first reaction: 2I + S2O8 I2 + 2SO4 . This is a relatively slow reaction. The reaction rate is dependent on the concentrations of the reactants, following -1 m -2 n the rate law: Rate = k[I ] [S2O8 ] . In order to study the kinetics of this reaction, or any reaction, there must be an experimental way to measure the concentration of at least one of the reactants or products as a function of time. -2 -2 -1 This was done in this experiment using a second reaction, 2S2O3 + I2 S4O6 + 2I , which occurred simultaneously with the reaction under investigation. Adding starch to the mixture -2 allowed the S2O3 of the second reaction to act as a built in “clock;” the mixture turned blue -2 -2 when all of the S2O3 had been consumed. -

Hydrohalogenation & Hydration of Alkynes Alkynes undergo many of the same addition reactions that alkenes do, including additions that require carbocation intermediates. Different energy and geometry changes may be required for additions to an alkyne and an alkene so some surprising outcomes may occur with alkynes. Model 1. Addition of HX Hydrogen halides (HCl, HBr, HI) add to alkynes to make vinyl halides . A carbocation mechanism is followed when the reaction is performed in the dark in a peroxide-free solvent. This addition obeys Markovnikov’s rule. A free-radical-chain mechanism is followed when HBr addition is initiated by organic peroxides. This addition gives an anti-Markonikov product. Critical Thinking Questions 1. Draw the carbocations indicated by the two bouncy curved arrows (below). Based on the observation that the carbocation mechanism yields a Markovnikov product, circle the more stable carbocation. 2. (CI) Draw the free radicals indicated by the two competing pathways (below). Based on the observation that the free-radical mechanism yields an anti-Markovnikov product, circle the more stable free radical. 3. The cations and radicals in CTQ #1 and #2 are called vinyl cations and vinyl radicals , respectively. Based on the regioselectivities reported in Model 1, what effect do alkyl substituents at the charged/radical carbon have on the energies of these species? Is this consistent with, or opposed to, their effect on R 3C+ and R 3C• species? 4. The geometry of a vinyl cation can be anticipated using VSEPR. Count electron domains in the cation below and predict all of the HCC bond angles. -

Abstract The secondary organic aerosol (SOA) yields from the laboratory chamber ozonolysis of a series of cycloalkenes and related compounds are reported. The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of the structure of the hydrocarbon parent molecule on SOA formation for a homologous set of compounds. Aspects of the compound structures that are varied include the number of carbon atoms present in the cycloalkene ring (C5 to C8), the presence and location of methyl groups, and the presence of an exocyclic or endocyclic double bond. The specific compounds considered here are cyclopentene, cyclohexene, cycloheptene, cyclooctene, 1-methyl-1-cyclopentene, 1-methyl-1- cyclohexene, 1-methyl-1-cycloheptene, 3-methyl-1-cyclohexene, and methylene cyclohexane. SOA yield is found to be a function of the number of carbons present in the cycloalkene ring, with increasing number resulting in increased yield. Yield is enhanced by the presence of a methyl group located at a double-bonded site but reduced by the presence of a methyl group at a non-double bonded site. The presence of an exocyclic double bond also leads to a reduced yield relative to the equivalent methylated cycloalkene. On the basis of these observations, the SOA yield for terpinolene relative to the other cyclic alkenes is qualitatively predicted, and this prediction compares well to measurements of SOA yield from the ozonolysis of terpinolene. -
