Therefore, there is a need to evaluate alternative forage crops to improve poor quality of the available forage source. Stylosanths scabra (Shrubby Stylo) is an important drought tolerant forage legume suitable for seasonally dry environments. It is a shrubby, erect legume with a long tap root system that make the species drought tolerant and able to produce moderate high quality forage under rain fed condition. Hence, Stylosanthes scabra is a good candidate species that need to be tested as an alternative forage source for smallholder farmers in tropical and subtropical climatic conditions often prone to drought and frost, owing to their biomass yield and nutritive value. Abstract: Feed shortage is the main cause of poor production performance in livestock under smallholder farmer’s in South Africa. Therefore, this study evaluated the growth performance, nutritive value and in vitro ruminal fermentation of Stylosanthes scabra accessions in climatic condition of Pretoria, South Africa as potential forage sources in order to improve feed quality and subsequently livestock production.

Species of the following genera were analyzed: Adesmia, Acacia, Caesalpinia, Coursetia, Galactia, Geoffroea, Hoffmannseggia, Prosopis, Robinia, Senna, Stylosanthes and Zornia. Seeds of selected species were collected in each soil geographic unit and placed in glass recipients to analyze root system growth and branching degree during the first months after germination. Soil profiles that were already opened up were used to study subterranean systems of arboreal species. Transverse sections of roots were cut and histological tests were carried out to analyze reserve substances. All species studied show an allorhizous system, whose variants are related to soil profile characteristics. Roots with plagiotropic growth are observed in highland grass steppes (Senna birostris var. hookeriana and Senna subulata), and in soils containing calcium carbonate (Prosopis caldenia). Root buds are found in: Acacia caven, Caesalpinia gilliesii, Senna aphylla, Geoffroea decorticans, Robinia pseudo-acacia, Adesmia cordobensis and Hoffmannseggia glauca. Two variants are observed in transverse sections of roots: a) woody with predominance of xylematic area with highly lignified cells, and b) fleshy with predominance of parenchymatic tissue.

Accepted 7 September, 2009 The study is on the introduction of perennial pasture crop Stylosanthes guianensis (Stylo) into the Sambisa Game Reserve in Borno State, Nigeria. Stylo is a tropical herbaceous legume primarily used as a pasture crop for humid tropical regions. The objectives were to observe the growth and establishment of stylo in the game reserve of Sudan Savanna ecological zone of Nigeria; examining the emergence rates using some pre germination treatments, determine the yield and the nutritive value of herbage. Viability of 65% was obtained although the emergence was highest when sulphuric acid was used as pre germination treatment. There was no significant difference between the treatments (P > 0.05). A yield of 308 kg DM/ha was obtained. The sample herbage for determination of yield and chemical composition were determined to be 93.0% DM; 5.95% CP; 3.0% EE; 38.0% CF and 5.0% ash. The cultivation of stylo is therefore, recommended in game reserves for increased forage quality and quantity to herbivorous game animals as a conservation strategy. Despite their importance, little progress has been made in understanding Stylosanthes anthracnose pathogens due to their insufficient genomic and transcriptomic data. In the current study, whole genome re-sequencing of seven C. gloeosporioides strains was carried out together with next generation RNA sequencing of C. gloeosporioides strain CH008. Whole genome re-sequencing was conducted with reference to the genome of highly virulent C. gloeosporioides strain CH008. It resulted in 10.06 G of effective data, with a mean proportion of 67.40% genes mapped to the reference strain and an average genome coverage of 79.71%. A total of 2,149,030 single nucleotide polymorphisms, 178,620 insertions and deletions, and 654 structural variations were discovered on the genomes of the seven tested strains.
