Sperm samples were collected from nine hormonally-induced males. The following parameters in fresh sperm were analyzed: seminal plasma osmolality (OSM), seminal pH, sperm motility (MOT), sperm velocity (SV) (including sperm curvilinear velocity (VCL), sperm straight-line velocity (VSL), and sperm average path velocity (VAP)), total time of sperm motility (TEMP), sperm concentration (CONC), and index of sperm normality (NORM).

RIVER MONSTERS 7 X 60 SERIES SYNOPSIS Extreme angler, Jeremy Wade, is on the hunt for freshwater fish with a taste for human flesh. This rip-roaring ride through the dark side of nature mixes action and adventure with mysteries, edge of the seat chase and a battle of wills between man and almost supernatural beasts who lurk in the serpentine waterways of the planet, mooching murderously underwater, growing to truly awesome sizes. Like all the best horror movies the images are intense and immediate, the grade is gritty and real, together heightening the drama on screen. With graphics overlaying the live action of a fish, Jeremy illustrates to the viewer, like a forensic investigation, exactly how these river monsters are constructed to kill. Killer Catfish Two years ago, on the treacherous Kali River, high in the mountains of Northern India, Jeremy unearthed the mother of all fisherman’s tales – and the ultimate freshwater horror: A super-sized freshwater fish turned man-eater. Jeremy takes on the biggest, toughest challenge he’s ever faced as he heads back to the Himalayas to separate fact from fiction and track down the monstrous beast. • Jeremy throws himself into the treacherous and swollen fast-funning waters of the Kali river in order to land a fish that could have claimed numerous human victims • A world record Goonch is landed on the banks of the river Piranha – pee-rah-nah In 1976 a packed coach crashed into the Amazon killing 39 people. By the time the bodies were pulled out by rescuers some had been so viciously mutilated by they could only be identified by their clothes.

Competition and distribution model predictions vary based on dominance hierarchies, but most assume differences in dominance are constant across habitats. More recent evidence suggests dominance and competitive advantages may vary based on habitat. We quantified dominance interactions between two species of sharks Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos and Carcharhinus melanopterus, across two different habitats, fore reef and back reef, at a remote Pacific atoll. We used Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) to observe dominance behaviors and quantified the number of aggressive interactions or bites to the BRUVs from either species, both separately and in the presence of one another. Blacktip reef sharks were the most abundant species in either habitat, and there was significant negative correlation between their relative abundance, bites on BRUVs, and the number of grey reef sharks. Although this trend was found in both habitats, the decline in blacktip abundance with grey reef shark presence was far more pronounced in fore reef habitats. We show that the presence of one shark species may limit the feeding opportunities of another, but the extent of this relationship is habitat specific. Future competition models should consider habitat-specific dominance or competitive interactions.

This vitamin is needed for bone and cartilage formation. Moreover, it acts as antioxidant and improve the immunological system. The present work investigated the effects of vitamin C diet supplementation to spotted sorubim (Pseudoplatystoma coruscans) fingerlings by frequency of bone and cartilage deformation. Ascorbyl poliphosphate (AP) was used as source of vitamin C in the diets for spotted sorubim fingerlings during three months. Six diets were formulated: one diet control (0 mg/kg of vitamin C) and 500, 1,000, 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 mg AP/kg diets. Fishes fed without vitamin C supplementation presented bone deformation in head and jaws, and fin fragilities. Thus, 500 mg AP/kg diet was enough to prevent deformation and the lack of vitamin C supplementation worsening the development of fingerlings.

Biodiversity of the Pantanal: response to seasonal flooding regime and to environmental degradation Alho, CJR.* Pós-graduação em Meio Ambiente e Desenvolvimento Regional, Universidade Para o Desenvolvimento do Estado e da Região do Pantanal – UNIDERP, Rua Ceará, 333, CEP 79003-010, Campo Grande, MS, Brazil *e-mail: [email protected] Received December 27, 2007 – Accepted December 27, 2007 – Distributed November 30, 2008 (With 1 figure) Abstract Seasonal flooding is the most important ecological phenomenon in the Pantanal. Every year many parts of the biome change from terrestrial into aquatic habitats and vice-versa. The degree of inundation creates a range of major habi- tats. Flooding occupies about 80% of the whole Pantanal. In contrast, during the dry season, most of the flooded areas stay dry, when the water returns to the river beds or evaporates. The Pantanal is a large continental savanna wetland (147,574 km2 in Brazil), touching Bolivia to the north and Paraguay to the south. The maze of fluctuating water levels, nutrients, and biota forms a dynamic ecosystem. The vegetation comprises 1,863 phanerogam plant species listed for the floodplain and 3,400 for the whole basin and 250 species of aquatic plants. The complex vegetation cover and sea- sonal productivity support a diverse and abundant fauna within the floodplain: 263 species of fish, 41 of amphibians, 113 of reptiles (177 for the basin), 463 of birds and 132 mammal species. Many endangered species occur, including jaguar (Panthera onca Linnaeus, 1758). Waterfowl are exceptionally
