PREFACE All doors were opened to start this travel, beginning for the many magical pristine forest of Ecuador, Sierra de Juárez Oaxaca and los Tuxtlas in Veracruz, some of the most biodiverse zones in the planet, were I had the honor to put my feet, contemplate their beauty and perfection and work in their mystical forest. It was a dream into reality! The collaboration with the German counterpart started at the beginning of my academic career and I never imagine that this will be continued to bring this research that summarizes the efforts of many researchers that worked hardly in the overwhelming and incredible biodiverse tropics. -

Email: [email protected] Abstract Dryopteridaceae (Polypodiopsida) in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. A taxonomic survey of Dryopteridaceae Herter (Polypodiopsida) was carried out in the state of Minas Gerais as a contribution to the knowledge of the state fern flora. This study was based on personal collections, field observations and mate- rial deposited in the Brazilian herbaria. Based on morphology, nine genera and 20 species were recognized: Arachniodes denticulata (Sw.) Ching, Cyclodium heterodon (Schrad.) T. Moore, C. meniscioides (Willd.) C. Presl, Didymochlaena truncatula (Sw.) J. Sm., Dryopteris patula (Sw.) Underw., D. wallichiana (Spreng.) Hyl., Olfersia cervina (L.) Kunze, Polybotrya cylindrica Kaulf., P. goyazensis Brade, P. speciosa Schott, P. sorbifolia Kuhn , Polystichum bradei Rosenst., P. montevidense (Spreng.) Rosenst., P. platyphyllum (Willd.) C. Presl, P. rochaleanum Glaz. ex Fée, Rumohra adiantiformis (G. Forst.) Ching, Stigmatopteris brevinervis (Fée) R.C. Moran, S. caudata (Raddi) C. Chr., S. prionites (Kunze) C. Chr. e S. tyucana (Raddi) C. Chr. Descriptions of the family, genera and species, as well as identification keys, illustrations, geographical distribution, and comments on genera and species are provided. Introduction 1.1 INTRODUCTION Northwestern Amazonian forest conservation: a challenge for ecologists The actual deforestation rates in Amazonian rain forests are extremely high. The worst case scenario could lead to an almost total disappearance of the largest tropical forest mass that nowadays exists on the earth, in a relatively short time (Laurance et al. 2001). Patterns of rain forest plant diversity in northwestern (NW) Amazonia have particular importance as plant diversity in this area reaches exceptional high values per unit area (Gentry 1988a, Valencia et al. 1994, ter Steege et al. 2003). To guarantee an effective conservation planning, basic knowledge on the distribution of individual species and species assemblages is necessary. In spite of the fact that information concerning to plant communities has much increased in the last decade, most studies have focused on trees because they are the most conspicuous elements in the forests (Gentry 1988b, Duivenvoorden 1995, 1996, Pitman et al. 1999, 2001, ter Steege et al. 2000, Condit et al. 2002). However, it is well known that vascular plant diversity in tropical rain forests is also well represented by other growth forms, such as climbers, shrubs, epiphytes and herbs (Gentry and Dobson 1987, Duivenvoorden 1994, Balslev et al. 1998, Galeano et al. 1998). In addition to this lack of knowledge on non-tree growth forms, most studies have been based on different methodological approaches at individual species or community level, different sample designs, and different spatial scales, which hampers the comparisons and extrapolations among independent case studies. The Pleistocene and Miocene-Pliocene climate history has been considered as the cornerstone to understand the origin of the plant and animal biodiversity and biogeography in Amazonian rain forests (Haffer 1969, Colinvaux 1987, Van der Hammen and Absy 1994, Hooghiemstra and van der Hammen 1998). -

Apéndices/Appendices Apéndice/Appendix 1 Plantas Vasculares/ Plantas vasculares registradas durante el Inventario Rápido Maijuna, del 14 al 31 de octubre 2009 en Loreto, Perú, Vascular Plants por Roosevelt García-Villacorta, Nállarett Dávila, Isaú Huamantupa y Corine Vriesendorp, con trabajo adicional en el herbario por Robin Foster, Isaú Huamantupa y Nállarett Dávila. Nombres de las familias siguen Mabberley (2008) pero usamos las familias de Stevens (2010) cuando son distintas de las de Mabberley. Proveemos nombres de las subfamilias cuando los géneros habían sido transferidos recientemente a nuevas familias* y para la familia Fabaceae.
