Flower City ■; k t :t"v Report COMMITTEE OF COUNCIL Committee of Council DATE: Mflfoh A , 206^ Standing Committee of the Council of the Corporation of the City of Brampton Date: February 5, 2009 File: C15 Subject: International Seniors Club Contact: Sharon Bonello, Recreation Supervisor - Seniors OVERVIEW: • The Club received a $100,000 grant under the "Immigration Settlement" program from the Province of Ontario to build a seniors centre. • A letter was sent from the Club to Council asking for the City to match the Provincial Grant received by the Club. • MPP Vic Dhillon sent a supporting letter on behalf of the Club to Council. • Staff met with the Club to determine their needs. The Club indicated that they were not interested in pursuing funding to build a designated seniors centre but were interested in leasing space. • Staff continue to work with the Club to develop programs at South Fletcher's Sportsplex. Recommendation: That the report from S. Bonello, Recreation Supervisor - Seniors, Community Services, dated February 5, 2009, to the Committee of Council Meeting of March 4, 2009 re. International Seniors Club (File C15) be received; Background: The International Seniors Club has been in existence since 1990. They are an affiliated seniors club who rent space at South Fletcher's Sportsplex five afternoons per week. In March 2007, the Club received a grant from the Provincial Government under the "Immigration Settlement" program to build a seniors centre. In April 2007, the President of the Club sent a letter to the Mayor asking for the City to match the Provincial Grant of $100,000. MPP Brampton West-Mississauga, Mr. Vic Dhillon sent a supporting letter to Council asking for financial assistance, as well as a donation of land at Timberlane Park. Council held a discussion with respect to the correspondence from MPP Dhillon and asked that this be referred to staff for their review. MPP Dhillon requested to attend Council as a delegation. The Clerk's Department provided the appropriate form to be completed, however it was not submitted. In May 2008, staff met with the Club to determine their needs. The Club members indicated that they were no longer interested in building a designated seniors centre, although interested in leasing space at the plaza at the comer of McLaughlin Road and Ray Lawson Boulevard. Staff made contact with MPP Dhillon's office to make sure that they were aware of the Club's plans. MPP Dhillon has not since taken action and no further contact has been made. Current Situation: Staff are currently working with the Club in developing further programming at South Fletcher's Sportsplex. This programming will allow the seniors, who are not members of a club, to participate in a variety of activities including cards, guest speakers, and social gatherings. Premier watch Premier Doug Ford was in Mississauga Friday to re-announce funding for community policing. Specifically, the Peel Regional Police is getting $20.5 million from the Community Safety and Policing grant program, a $195-million envelope the PCs announced in mid-December. In Peel, some of the cash will go towards more neighbourhood watch services, police town halls and “cultural community outreach.” "My message to the criminals that are watching us now: we are coming for you, we are going to find you and we are going to lock you up for a long time,” Ford said at the news conference, which featured a well-armed police backdrop. Solicitor General Sylvia Jones, Attorney General Doug Downey, local PC MPPs and ex-PC leader-turned-mayor-of-Brampton Patrick Brown were also in tow. Brown and Ford had their first official sit-down since Ford took office at the Peel police station where the announcement took place. The pair discussed crime, CCTV cameras, courthouse resources and health care, according to the mayor. “I appreciate the cooperative tone,” Brown tweeted, alongside a “prayer hands” emoji. Ford defended the decision to appoint Toronto police constable Randall Arsenault to the Ontario Human Rights Commission, despite the fact he was not part of the official candidate selection process.

Queen’s Park notes FOLLOW US @Mobilepk For the week of April 18–22, 2016 ONTARIO SUPERIOR COURT RULES BILL 115 VIOLATED CHARTER OF RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS In a major victory for Canada’s labour movement, Justice Thomas R. Lederer of the Ontario Superior Court ruled that Bill 115, Putting Students First Act, violated collective bargaining rights under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The controversial bill was enacted in 2012 and portrayed by the Ontario Liberals as necessary to help right the province’s economic situation. Former Premier Dalton McGuinty and his Education Minister, Laurel Broten, insisted at the time that Bill 115 was within the province’s constitutional prerogative. But, Justice Lederer disagreed saying, “The problem with what took place is with the process, not the end result. It is possible that had the process been one that properly respected the associational rights of the unions, the fiscal and economic impacts of the result would have been the same or similar to those that occurred. In response to Justice Lederer’s decision OSSTF/ FEESO President Paul Elliott said, “We are pleased that the Court has reconfirmed the importance of free, fair and meaningful collective bargaining.” In his judgement, Justice Lederer directed the government and unions to find a remedy. If they are unable to, they may ask him for his opinion. The day after the ruling, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath (Hamilton-Centre) asked Premier Kathleen Wynne, “My next question is also for the Premier. Courts have ruled that the Liberal government violated the Charter of Rights and Freedoms with Bill 115.

For immediate release Politicians urged to tackle traffic woes 87% of residents say public transit should be regional spending priority Toronto – April 29, 2014 – On the eve of a new provincial budget, a majority of residents in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) say they are more likely to vote for politicians who support new, dedicated dollars to get us moving. That’s the message CivicAction and a coalition of nearly two dozen business, labour, health, community, and environmental groups are delivering to Ontario MPPs and party leaders. The group points to the results of an April Angus Reid Forum poll* showing that 87% of GTHA residents want to see transportation as a regional spending priority, and 83% said they would more likely support new taxes or fees if they were put into a dedicated fund for transportation. Half of the GTHA’s elected officials - including more than 50% of MPPs across the three major political parties - have signed CivicAction’s “Get a Move On” pledge that calls for dedicated, efficient, and sustainable investment in our regional transportation priorities. Sikhs are an ethnoreligious group and indigenous people of the Punjab region currently governed by India. The Sikhs have faced persecution under Indian rule since the British granted independence to India in August 1947. The religious status of Sikhism and identity of its followers – the Sikhs – has been usurped by the Constitution of India which superimposes and labels Sikhs as "Hindu" in Article Explanation II to Article 25(b) of the Constitution. As a national ethnoreligious minority of India, many fundamental human rights have not been granted to the Sikhs under Indian rule. The Sikh community and the Indian Government began their clash long ago with the Explanation II to Article 25 of the constitution of India which classifies Sikhs as Hindus.
