  • Letter to JCRC Boston Regarding Petition Vs
10 Iyar 5781 April 22, 2021 Jeremy Burton, Executive Director Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston 126 High Street Boston, MA 02110 2833 Smith Ave Ste 225 Baltimore, MD 21209 Dear Mr. Burton, www.cjvalues.org We write concerning the investigation that the JCRC of Greater Boston has [email protected] conducted regarding Morton Klein and the Zionist Organization of America 301.727.2700 (ZOA). It is obvious at the outset that the JCRC strayed from its mission to represent the broader Jewish community—as acknowledged even by those Rabbi Pesach Lerner filing the complaint—by contemplating expulsion of a long-standing member President organization that clearly represents a vibrant and growing Jewish faction. Rabbi Yoel Schonfeld Vice-President But further, we have read the complaint, and are dismayed. The “charges” Rabbi Avrohom Gordimer against Mr. Klein repeatedly beg the question: they assume not only that a Chairman, Rabbinic Circle particular opinion is correct, but that any opposition is inherently motivated Rabbi Dov Fischer by hatred and bigotry. The complaint combines a demand for ideological Western Regional VP conformity with demonization in place of debate, besmirching the JCRC’s Rabbi Ze’ev Smason reputation as a democratic and deliberative body. Midwestern Regional VP For example, the complaint asserts that it is “bigoted” to describe Ilhan Omar Rabbi Moshe B. Parnes and Rashida Tlaib as hating Jews and supporting terror. It simply presumes Southern Regional VP that Mr. Klein’s objections are connected to their identity characteristics. Rabbi Steven Pruzansky Israel Regional VP This is absurd. David Duke does not back Ilhan Omar because of her identity, Rabbi Jonathan Guttentag but because he shares her hatred of Jews.

Morton Klein of the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) and Candace Owens of Turning Point USA will be testifying at a congressional hearing on hate crime. Not only does neither individual possess any expertise on the matter, they have also both engaged in bigoted and incendiary rhetoric that disqualifies them from engaging productively on the subJect. Morton Klein: In 2018, Klein compared Arabs to Nazis, and doubled down on his use of “filthy Arab” as a slur he found legitimate. Morton Klein came to the defense of Jeanine Pirro after Fox News condemns her anti-Muslim comments suggesting the HiJab is a sign of disloyalty to the United States: 1 Klein also called for the U.S. to adopt Israel’s discriminatory policies that profile on the basis of faith and background, saying: “we should adopt the same profiling policies as Israel and be more thorough in vetting Muslims.” Morton Klein leveled sexist attack on Harvard-educated actress Natalie Portman, suggesting she was attractive but stupid, over her criticism of BenJamin Netanyahu: 2 Klein regularly attacks more established Jewish organizations for failing to seemingly engage in bigoted attacks. Here, he makes the baseless allegation that the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) does not condemn the murder of Jews by Arabs: Klein also attacks the ADL by accusing them of “promoting Black Lives Matter and … the extremist anti-Israel group J Street,” prompting criticism from the Conference of Presidents of MaJor American Jewish Organizations: 3 When Fox News host Jeanine Pirro found herself in hot water a few weeks ago, after suggesting that American Muslims who wear a HiJab (including an American Muslim Congresswoman) could not be loyal to the United States, Morton Klein tweeted his support for Pirro’s comments.

  • Antisemitism in a New Era
Rabbi Laurie Zimmerman Congregation Shaarei Shamayim Yom Kippur Morning September 30, 2017 Antisemitism in a New Era What a headline…“Steve Bannon Loves Israel and the Jews – Really.” In this recent op-ed, published by the Forward, Morton Klein, President of the Zionist Organization of America, explains why his organization is featuring Bannon at their upcoming Superstar Gala Dinner this November. Klein complains that far left-wing groups and the media are delegitimizing the best friends of Israel and the Jewish people by calling them “extremists” and “anti-Semites.” So, he sets the record straight: Bannon has been misinterpreted. When Bannon said that “Breitbart is the platform of the alt-right” he meant that alt-right denotes the idea of “anti-establishment” and “anti-mainstream.” Bannon, he argues, “despises bigots, and has never allowed bigots, racists or neo-Nazis to publish in Breitbart.” Heck, Breitbart opened a news bureau in Jerusalem. And three of their top writers are yarmulke-wearing Orthodox Jews. (The Forward, September 7, 2017) What a shonda. For as long as I can remember, it was the right-wing of the Jewish community that found antisemitism lurking under every rock. It was only three years ago that the Anti-Defamation League under the leadership of conservative-leaning Abraham Foxman published the hopelessly flawed survey on global antisemitism, claiming that one quarter of the world is antisemitic. Even Jay Michaelson, an ordained Conservative rabbi and lifelong Jewish educator, gets labeled an anti-Semite after he muddles his way through the survey. (“I Am 1 Billionth ‘Anti-Semite’” The Forward, May 20, 2014) But now it seems that the left and the mainstream of the Jewish community are alarmed by the spike in antisemitism following last year’s election of Donald Trump, while the right is telling us to stop over-reacting – or as Foxman said last winter following the dozens of bomb threats to Jewish community centers and vandalism in Jewish cemeteries: “Cool it, cool it” and lay off the president.

Klein1 Hearing title: HATE CRIMES AND THE RISE OF WHITE NATIONALISM Before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary, 116th Congress Tuesday April 9, 2019, 10:00 a.m. Rayburn House Office Building, Room 2141 Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) Ranking Member Doug Collins (R-GA) Chairman Nadler, Ranking Member Collins, Members of the Committee: Thank you for holding this hearing. And thank you, Chairman Nadler, for stating in your November 27 letter that this Committee “will likely examine the causes of racial and religious violence.”2 For the past 25 years, I have served as president of the oldest pro-Israel organization in the country, the non-partisan Zionist Organization of America (the ZOA). A key ZOA mission is protecting American Jews and others from antisemitism and violence. As a child of Holocaust survivors, I’ve personally felt the horrors of unbridled antisemitism. I was born in a displaced persons camp in Germany, and grew up without the loving presence of most of my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, whom the Nazis murdered. The FBI reports that Jews are the victims in sixty percent (60%) of religiously-motivated hate crimes.3 Jew-hatred is the canary in the coal mine, the harbinger of hate in society at large. 1 ZOA Director of Special Projects Elizabeth Berney, Esq. assisted with this written testimony. 2 Congressman Jerry Nadler press release and letter, Nov. 27, 2018, at https://nadler.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=391395

Handout #21 A Guide to Who’s Who in NAI’s “Following the Funding” and “Jewish Organizations and Islamophobia” Modules Anti-Muslim Individuals and Groups ● The Clarion Fund/Project has produced several hateful anti-Muslim videos, including Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West (28 million DVDs distributed in swing states of it during the 2008 presidential election); and The Third Jihad: Radical Islam’s Vision for America, (shown to nearly 1,500 officers at NYPD trainings). Among the featured interviewees are Steven Emerson, Brigitte Gabriel, and Daniel Pipes in Obsession and former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former NYPD Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly in The Third Jihad. ● Steven Emerson (Investigative Project on Terrorism; Counterterrorism & Security Education and Research Foundation/CTSERF) has claimed that Islam “sanctions genocide, planned genocide, as part of its religious doctrine.” A frequent mainstream media figure, he has a long history of making baseless, inflammatory anti-Muslim claims, such as his assertion on Fox News that Birmingham, England and other European cities were filled with “no-go zones” where non- Muslims and government officials don’t go. In 2007, Emerson met with former Trump White House chief strategist Steve Bannon to discuss Bannon’s proposed film, “Destroying the Great Satan: The Rise of Islamic Facism [sic] in America.” ● Brigitte Gabriel (ACT for America) maintains that a “practicing Muslim who believes in the teachings of the Quran cannot be a loyal citizen of the United States of America.” The Southern Poverty Law Center describes ACT as “the largest grassroots anti-Muslim group in America.” ACT gave an award in 2016 to CIA Director Mike Pompeo.

Radical expressions of anti- Israel sentiment may include Israeli flags being removed from their displays, calls by student activists to boycott all pro-Israel groups on campus, the heckling of pro-Israel speakers and calling Israel a settler-colonial state. Radical anti-Israel activism on campus is driven primarily by Students for Justice in Palestine, a network of pro-Palestinian student groups across the U.S. that disseminate frequently inflammatory anti-Israel propaganda. These groups sometimes ally with campus chapters of Jewish Voice for Peace, a radical anti-Israel activist group, whose Jewish origins and membership help shield its activism and rhetoric from charges of antisemitism. Radical anti-Israel rhetoric and activities on campus often emerged from Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions campaigns against Israel; the implementation of annual Israeli Apartheid Week programs; the convening of conferences and lectures featuring all or almost all pro-BDS speakers; and events featuring Israeli or pro-Israel speakers, to which activists sometimes responded with heckling.
