BRIEFING NOTE To: The Hon Nola Marino MP and DITRDC From: RDA Murray NSW Submitted by: Mary Hoodless – Chair, RDA Murray Information Source: RDA Murray and Murray Socio-Economic Activation Taskforce (MSEAT) Date: Wednesday 15 July 2020 Recovery phase and what this looks like: • NSW-VIC border closure • RDA Murray coordinating communication and supporting local govt • Police/defence presence is notable – road blocks, random stops/ checks. This has a highly tangible impact on general community confidence. • RDA Murray are working together with regional leaders to predict and assess border closure impacts and what we can do to support the community • Addressing migrant workforce cross border issues. How recovery can be effectively implemented: • Support border specific economic and social needs • Consider the USA Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructure process to allow insolvent businesses to restructure without the current bankruptcy costs that may in fact ‘sink’ the business • Community – Invest in health promotion to improve immunity and impact of COVID 19 on the general population. Programs to avoid co-morbidities associated with obesity, excessive alcohol, little exercise and smoking. • Murray Irrigation Limited & Local Government bridge infrastructure proposal development. Impact and effectiveness of the government COVID interventions in your region including identifying what additional support may be needed. • 3 active Covid cases on the border. Pop up testing units in Albury to support increased demand for testing. • Business concerns when existing job keeper/ATO support ends o Zombie Business – pre COVID were at risk, given life support, still unsustainable o Other businesses are genuinely in trouble – eg a tourism business had to refund $60k overnight – flourishing one day-closed the next – will they survive? o Other business owners have taken the opportunity to collect the funds, close and retire • Reports that some tourism operators are nervous about accepting bookings and feel unable to request further information, such as postcodes, from their clients.

HERITAGE, LEGACY AND 100TH ANNIVERSARY TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS ACCOMPLISHMENTS SPECIAL EDITION SAFETY A CULTURE OF INNOVATION From its humble beginnings as a cork manufacturer in the 1920s, to its first motorized vehicle, the Mazda-Go, Mazda has cultivated an engineering culture of creating products that delight its users. After World War II, Mazda’s manufacturing expertise expanded to cover instruments of mobility for a developing nation. HERITAGE, LEGACY AND 100TH ANNIVERSARY TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS ACCOMPLISHMENTS SPECIAL EDITION SAFETY This culminated in its first passenger car, the Mazda R360 Coupe. Mazda took on the challenge to build, innovate, and defy convention by creating a car that utilized the latest in engine and transmission technology at that time. Revealed in 1960, the Mazda 360 Coupe was so advanced that it broke industry convention and heralded the future of Mazda automotive engineering prowess for passenger cars. This is the Mazda DNA. Founded in passion, nurtured with dedication. HERITAGE, LEGACY AND 100TH ANNIVERSARY TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS ACCOMPLISHMENTS SPECIAL EDITION SAFETY Defying convention is not new to Mazda. In 1967, Mazda unveiled the Cosmo Sport 110S, the first volume production rotary engine-powered sports car. The tenacity, resolve and unquenchable passion shown by Mazda engineers to overcome the challenges brought about by the unconventional motor has become ingrained in the company’s ethos until today. HERITAGE, LEGACY AND 100TH ANNIVERSARY TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS ACCOMPLISHMENTS SPECIAL EDITION SAFETY Introducing technology is key to Mazda’s success. Proving it works, sealed its unassailable reputation. In 1991, after 18 years of competing in the highest level of sports car racing, Mazda took the overall win in the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans with the rotary- powered Mazda 787B.

Construction of Hume Dam, 1919-1936 Part 3: Getting Started Joe Wooding and Greg Ryan Copious amounts of material, equipment and infrastructure were needed. Two construction villages sprang up. The original Mitta Mitta Junction was the Victorian hamlet we now know simply as Mitta Mitta, on the upper reaches of the Mitta Mitta River. It had first boasted a post office in 1859. A new ‘Mitta Junction’ township was established in about 1920 on the Victorian side of the Hume Dam construction site. The town and The sign reads ‘Mitta Junction Reservoir all its contents was sold at auction in School No 4080’ June 1936 for £7000. A school was built at Mitta Junction in 1922 to cope with the huge increase in activity. Some conjecture persists over the name of the village, due to both football and cricket clubs playing as Ebden Weir. A branch from the Cudgewa Line near Ebden was laid, allowing most of the Victorian requirements to come by rail. One of the ten Thornycroft Lorries being loaded. They ferried equipment from the Albury railway siding to the NSW construction site. The NSW village was known as Hume Weir and started from nothing. A metalled road was installed from Wirlinga (now Riverina Highway). A railway siding and depot at North Street was constructed. A fleet of ten solid rubber tyred Thornycroft motor lorries capable of 10 mph (16 km/h), shuttled vast amounts of stores, equipment and cement to the dam site. Two quarries were established. The one in Victoria provided earth fill and clay for the embankment.
