We report upon the amphibians collected during seven expeditions carried out between the years 2000–2006 to thirteen localities in both Refugio de Vida Silvestre Río San Juan and Reserva Biológica Indio-Maíz, southeastern Nicaragua. We include morphometric data of around one-half of the adult specimens in the collection, and provide a brief general overview and discuss zoogeographic and conservation considerations of the amphibians known to occur in the Río San Juan area. Reserve. 3 Costa Rica is internationally recognized as one of the most biologically diverse countries on the planet in total species numbers for many taxonomic groups of flora and fauna, one of those being amphibians. Costa Rica has 190 species of amphibians known from within its tiny 51,032 square kilometers territory. With 3.72 amphibian species per 1,000 sq. km. of national territory, Costa Rica is one of the richest countries in the world regarding amphibian diversity density. Amphibians are under constant threat by contamination, deforestation, climatic change, and disease. The majority of Costa Rica’s amphibians are surrounded by mystery in regards to their basic biology and roles in the ecology. Through intense research in the natural environment and in captivity many important aspects of their biology and conservation can become better known. The Costa Rican Amphibian Research Center (C.R.A.R.C.) was established in 2002, and is a privately owned and operated conservational and biological research center dedicated to studying, understanding, and conserving one of the most ecologically important animal groups of Neotropical humid forest ecosystems, that of the amphibians. -

However, this number is likely an underestimate due to the presence of many unexplored areas that are diffcult to access. Between 2012 and 2017, a monitoring survey of amphibians was conducted in the Central Caribbean of Costa Rica, on the northern edge of the Matama mountains in the Talamanca mountain range, to study the distribution patterns and natural history of species across this region, particularly those considered as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The results show the highest amphibian species richness among Middle America lowland evergreen forests, with a notable anuran representation of 64 species. -

Acosta-Galvis y Adrián Pinzón Resumen Se describe una nueva especie de rana nodriza proveniente de las estribaciones andinas en el departamento de Boyacá y asociada a la cuenca del río Orinoco en Colombia. Esta especie posee una similitud morfológica con Hyloxalus picachos que habita en las estribaciones andinas en el departamento de Caquetá, pero difiere de esta porque la banda lateral oblicua se extiende hasta el rostro y por su patrón cromático del iris en vida. Se describe el cambio ontogénico de sus estados larvales junto con sus vocalizaciones que están compuestas por notas simples, con una tasa de vocalización de 124 notas por minuto y con estructura espectral que consiste en 5 armónicos con una frecuencia dominante entre 4213,3--5828,2 Hz. Con la descripción de esta nueva especie se reconocen 23 especies para este género en Colombia. Palabras clave. Bioacustica. Hyloxalus. Piedemonte. Renacuajos. Taxonomía. Abstract A new species of nurse frog is described from the Andean foothills in the department of Boyacá and associated Orinoco River basin in Colombia. This species has a morphological similarity to Hyloxalus picachos, which inhabits the Andean foothills in the department of Caquetá but differs due to the presence of an oblique lateral band that extends to the snout, in addition to its chromatic pattern of the iris in life. -

A Name for the Species of Allobates (Anura: Dendrobatoidea: Aromobatidae) from the Magdalena Valley of Colombia
Copeia, 2007(4), pp. 844–854 A Name for the Species of Allobates (Anura: Dendrobatoidea: Aromobatidae) from the Magdalena Valley of Colombia TARAN GRANT,ANDRE´ S ACOSTA, AND MARCO RADA We describe a new species of Allobates from the Magdalena Valley in Colombia. The new species and its sister species, A. talamancae, are the only two species of Allobates known to occur west of the Andes. The new species differs from A. talamancae in being smaller, possessing a diffuse pale oblique lateral stripe, and exhibiting strong swelling of finger III in adult males. Tadpoles also differ in the relative size of anterior and posterior labial papillae; in the new species anterior papillae are conspicuously larger than posterior papillae, whereas in A. talamancae they are subequal in size. Allobates talamancae and the new species are allopatric. Among the cis-Andean species of Allobates, the new species most resembles A. melanolaemus, which also possesses a diffuse pale oblique lateral stripe and a solid black throat in adult males, but from which it differs in being smaller and adult males having finger III strongly swollen and solid black pigmentation covering the chest and most of the belly. Se describe una nueva especie de Allobates del Valle del Magdalena en Colombia. Esta especie y su especie hermana, A. talamancae, son las u´nicas dos especies de Allobates que ocurren al occidente de los Andes. La nueva especie difiere de A. talamancae por ser ma´s pequen˜a, poseer una difusa franja oblicualateral pa´lida, y tener el dedo III de la mano en los machos adultos fuertemente ensanchado. -

Although endoparasites are traditionally characterized using mor- Co-diversification phology, sequences of conserved genes, and shotgun metagenomics, host transcriptomes constitute an underused Amphibians resource to identify these organisms’ diversity. By isolating non-host transcripts from host transcriptomes, in- Aposematism dividual host tissues can now simultaneously reveal their endoparasite species richness (i.e., number of different Parasitology taxa) and provide insights into parasite gene expression. These approaches can be used in host taxa whose endoparasites are mostly unknown, such as those of tropical amphibians. Here, we focus on the poison frogs (Dendrobatidae) as hosts, which are a Neotropical clade known for their bright coloration and defensive alka- loids. These toxins are an effective protection against vertebrate predators (e.g., snakes and birds), bacteria, and skin-biting ectoparasites (e.g., mosquitoes); however, little is known about their deterrence against eukaryotic endoparasites. -
