BAJA expressions: ART July-August 2010 7 From white Ford Mustangs and the Palace of Culture to the House in the Tunnel and the Cube and the Ball STORY AND PHOTOS BY GLENN MICHEL Part two of A two-part series BAJA BREEZE ARTS & CULTURE WRITER In the last Baja Breeze, Glenn Michel suggested that the real story, the one that doesn’t make headlines north of the border, is the thriving artist community in Tijuana, which has emerged and evolved unbeknownst to much of the world. Indeed, the very soul of Tijuana is defined in large part by its historical and ongoing commitment to the arts. In part two of this two-part series, Michel walks us through the Tijuana institutions, organizations, and players that collectively have created an environment in which art and artists can flourish in this complex and fascinating border city. CENTRO CULTURAL TIJUANA (CECUT) n the Mexican tradition, three levels of government – federal, state and city – provide funding for Tijuana’s cul- tural institutions. The Tijuana Cultural Center is not only the premier force in the Tijuana performing and visual Iarts community, it’s the city’s crowning contemporary architectural landmark. The IMAX Theater Building that Tijuanans call La Bola (The Ball) is a masterpiece of renowned Mexican architects Pedro Ramirez Vazquez and Ma- nuel Rosen Morrison. El Cubo (The Cube), designed by Tijuana’s Eugenio Velasques of the Artesano architectural firm, harmoniously incorporates space for the visual arts while making its own architectural statement. The Ball was inaugurated in 1982. The Cube opened in 2008. The Center’s main theater is home to the Baja California Orchestra as well as the Spanish American Guitar Center. Armando Garcia Orso, Sub-director of Exhibitions, is an architect by training and an experienced curator and manager of exhibits. He pointed out how The Cube meets the international standards for security, temperature, humidity and lighting. “Even San Diego museums do not meet these standards,” he said. The current major exhibit, the 9th biennial Monterrey FEMSA, is an important showing of selected artists from throughout Mexico and Brazil. And yet, Garcia Orso stressed the many projects that are in collaboration with San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco organizations. “We will soon have an Ansel Adams showing from the San Diego Museum of Photographic Art,” he said. Also in the works is an exhibit devoted to the missions of Northern Mexico and California. Another example of cultural exchange with our neighbors to the north was a CECUT exhibit, “Heroes Y Artesanos,” displayed for a year by the Mingei International Museum in San Diego. In turn, a Mingei curated show will appear at CECUT next year.     April 11, 2014 Password for the STANDARD Newsletter Archive is: PCAPP I AM LEAVING THE U.S. I went on a six day working vacation this past week to La Paz, Mexico. Guess whose boat was at the fuel dock down there? The answer in a minute. While there I overheard some Gringo’s talking about how they were fed up with the corporate life back in the states. He worked for Cisco, and she was a real estate agent in the Southern California area. They had plans for eventually leaving the U.S. behind and moving to Mexico permanently. 1 I have been going to Mexico since I was eight years old. I was fortunate to have a father who had the spirit of adventure, and a mother that was happy to tag along. We crossed the border almost every other Saturday to watch the horses run at Agua Caliente racetrack in Tijuana. My good mother would also make sure that I went to church the next day. Back then, I was busy inventing a system that would predict the final time that a horse would run. It was quite a formula. I was in my mid-teens at the time. I have been a number cruncher my entire life. Finally at the age of 19, I hit the pick six at Caliente. I had six straight winners using my system and I left the track with bundles of fifty dollar bills. I believe it added up to about $26,000 overall for a $16 bet. Caliente closed a few years later, but it sure left me with some good memories.

    Spring and Summer Salads Back in the early salad eating days (circa 1st century CE), ancient Greeks and Romans gathered and layered raw vegetables, drizzling vinegar, oil, and herbs over top to create the world’s first salad. During this healthy, raw food diet craze, Hippocrates sparked a huge debate when he declared that eating raw vegetables in a salad before supper helps clear the intestines of obstructions. Critics backlashed and said that the vinegar of dressing affected the flavor of wine, so salads should be eaten after the main course. Today, most salads are happily consumed before the main course. Flash forward to the Middle Ages – Artistic transformations and revivals were made during this Renaissance period, including green leafy experimentation. The dinner salads that were created during this time are extremely similar to the ones we still eat and enjoy today. Today, salads are available in almost every restaurant, cafe, and even gas station around the country. But what did the United States do to create their own salad tradition? As Todd Frye from the nostalgic Pop-Cult website eloquently puts it, “As an American food, salads were relatively unimportant until the back to nature movement of the 60’s. This was a meat and potatoes nation well through the T-bone-on-the- grill fifties.” Popular Salads: Caesar: Invented in 1903 Giacomo Junia, an Italian cook in Chicago, Illinois.
