OFFICE OF WILLIAM JEFFERSON CLINTON I’m delighted to welcome you to my home state of Arkansas, the place where I was called to a life of public service and learned that every person has a story to tell. I tried my best as Attorney General, Governor, and President to help the people of Arkansas live even better life stories, and I will be forever grateful I’ve had the chance to serve the state that has given me so much. That is one important reason I decided to build my Presidential Center in Little Rock. I wanted the Center to serve, first and foremost, as a Presidential Library. But I also wanted it to be a place for people to come together to learn about the history of our country and the world, and to be inspired to take an active role in shaping our common future. We dedicated the Center in the middle of a torrential rainstorm on November 18, 2004. I was joined by President George W. Bush, President George H.W. Bush, and President Jimmy Carter, as well as nearly 30,000 people from around the world who sat through the downpour to celebrate with me. Since that rainy Thursday almost a decade ago, the Center has welcomed more than three million visitors. From elementary school students to world leaders, our visitors come from every corner of the globe and from every walk of life. Often, I take the opportunity to tour the Center and meet our visitors. And every time I visit with our guests, I am filled with confidence that the Center continues to realize my vision as a place where everyone can study the issues of today so that we can meet the challenges of tomorrow. I look forward to the ongoing creative cooperation among all the Presidential Libraries as we continue to preserve and interpret Presidential history, making the past more accessible and more meaningful. President Franklin D. Roosevelt captured the value of this study at his own Library’s dedication in 1944, when he said, “A nation must believe in three things. It must believe in the past. It must believe in the future.     Joining the World of Journals Welcome to the nation’s first and, to our knowledge, only undergraduate research journal in communi- cations. We discovered this fact while perusing the Web site of the Council on Undergraduate Research, which lists and links to the 60 or so undergraduate research journals nationwide (http://www.cur.org/ugjournal. html). Some of these journals focus on a discipline (e.g., Journal of Undergraduate Research in Physics), some are university-based and multidisciplinary (e.g., MIT Undergraduate Research Journal), and some are university-based and disciplinary (e.g., Furman University Electronic Journal in Undergraduate Mathematics). The Elon Journal is the first to focus on undergraduate research in journalism, media and communi- cations. The School of Communications at Elon University is the creator and publisher of the online journal. The second issue was published in Fall 2010 under the editorship of Dr. Byung Lee, associate professor in the School of Communications. The three purposes of the journal are: • To publish the best undergraduate research in Elon’s School of Communications each term, • To serve as a repository for quality work to benefit future students seeking models for how to do undergraduate research well, and • To advance the university’s priority to emphasize undergraduate student research. The Elon Journal is published twice a year, with spring and fall issues. Articles and other materials in the journal may be freely downloaded, reproduced and redistributed without permission as long as the author and source are properly cited.     ABSTRACT POLITICAL (IN)DISCRETION: HILLARY CLINTON’S RESPONSE TO THE LEWINSKY SCANDAL by Kelsey Snyder Through an examination of gender, politics, and media during the time of the Lewinsky scandal, this project shows that conversations about the first lady shifted throughout 1998. Just after the allegations were made public, the press and American people fought against the forthright position that Hillary took; the expectations of traditional first ladies they had known before were not met. After facing backlash via the press, the first lady receded to more acceptably defined notions of her actions, based largely in late 20th century conservative definitions of appropriate gender roles. By the end of 1998, consideration of a run for the Senate and increased public support for her more traditional image provided a compromise for Hillary Rodham Clinton’s public image. Having finally met the expectations of the nation, the press spoke less of the first lady in comparison to family values and almost exclusively by means of her political abilities.     A Coalition to Protect and Grow National Service Membership Overview About Voices for National Service PARTNERING TO PROTECT AND EXPAND NATIONAL SERVICE Voices for National Service is a coalition of national, state and local service organizations working together to build bipartisan support for national service, develop policies to expand and strengthen service opportunities for all Americans, and to ensure a robust federal investment in the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). Voices for National Service was founded in 2003 in the wake of a successful campaign to save AmeriCorps from sudden and significant proposed cuts. The national service field organized and launched a successful “Save AmeriCorps” campaign that ultimately restored--and in fact increased--federal funding for CNCS and AmeriCorps within one year. Following the successful 2003 Save AmeriCorps campaign, the national service community established Voices for National Service, a permanent field-based coalition dedicated to protecting and growing the federal investment in national service.     CLINTON PRESIDENTIAL CENTER IMPACT EVALUATION AND ANALYSIS FOR RELEASE NOVEMBER 15, 2014 The William J. Clinton Presidential Center and Park opened in November 2004 following a multi- year process that included consideration of as many as 30 sites. At the time the downtown Little Rock site was selected, Central Arkansas leaders expected the Clinton Center to accelerate redevelopment in the downtown area, increase tourism, and enhance the state’s perception nationally and globally. In choosing a site, President Clinton and his team wanted to ensure that the chosen location would benefit socially and economically. In fact, an abandoned rail-switching yard in Little Rock’s warehouse district was selected with the belief that the former brownfield site would spark reinvestment in the area. In 1999, two years after the site was announced, an article in USA Today stated, “The depressed surrounding warehouse district has been reinvigorated and downtown Little Rock is suddenly the place to be…” The Clinton Center and Park, built at a cost of $165 million, covers approximately 30 acres and includes the William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum, the associated archives and research center, the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service, and the Arkansas offices of the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation. In addition to the Library building, the Park includes the Choctaw Station, a renovated train station that houses the Clinton School, and the Rock Island Railroad Bridge, which has been restored as a pedestrian bridge crossing the Arkansas River.     A Collection of Essays TEN YEARS OF THE CLINTON PRESIDENTIAL CENTER 2004 – 2014 AN IMPACT THAT ENDURES By Chelsea Clinton When my family left the White House, my father faced a set of questions and opportunities about how to continue the work he had long championed through elected office as a private citizen. As he has said, while President, he confronted a seemingly endless horizon of challenges on any given day. Through the Clinton Foundation and its various initiatives, by necessity and deliberate choice, he has focused on tackling those urgent challenges which can be addressed outside government and on which he, and now our whole family, can have the most significant impact. What has not changed is what has always motivated my father —will people be better off when he’s done than when he started. I am grateful he hasn’t stopped yet—and has no plans to do so. The collection of essays that follows offers a window onto the various ways in which my father has served, in and out of elected office, and in the United States and around the world. Common threads emerge, in addition to how he keeps score of his own life, including a fearlessness to take on ostensibly impossible issues, a determination to see things through until the end and a belief that every success only contains another challenge to do things better next time. Because, as my father knows all too well, all too often there is a next time. The latter half of 2014 has been momentous in our family as Marc and I welcomed our daughter Charlotte into the world and my parents (finally) became grandparents.

Their parents, Patricia Smith and Charles Woods, sued for- mer Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for common-law torts based on her use of a private email server in conducting State Department affairs while Secretary of State and public statements about the cause of the attacks she made in her personal capacity while a presidential candidate. They appeal the substi- tution of the United States as the defendant on the claims involving the email server and the dismissal of their complaint for lack of subject matter jurisdiction and failure to state a claim. We affirm. I. The genesis of this case is in Clinton’s private meeting with Smith and Woods on September 14, 2012, in the wake of their sons’ deaths.
