DE MILLE AND THE ART OF APPLIED SUGGESTIBILITY: VIOLENCE, SEX AND FALSE MEMORIES WITHIN HIS BIBLICAL (AND OTHER) CINEMA Abstract Legendary producer-director Cecil B. DeMille is an unsung auteur who helped co-found both Hollywood and Paramount studios and became America’s pre-eminent biblical filmmaker. He employed many artistic strategies, but none as politically astute as the deliberate engineering of false memories in a deliberate act of applied suggestibility. This trademark effort allowed DeMille to achieve desired audience reactions whilst simultaneously avoiding censorship problems and moral vigilantes who thought they saw objectionable things in his movies but which were not actually there. Consequently, selected DeMille films and the associated critical literature were inspected, reviewed and integrated into the text to enhance narrative coherence utilizing humanist film criticism as the guiding analytical lens. It was concluded that DeMille was a master filmmaker and that his cinematic oeuvre warrants a more thoughtful re-evaluation than evidenced to date. Further research into DeMille studies is therefore highly warranted, warmly recommended and already long overdue. Introduction: The DeMillean Genesis of an Aesthetic Phenomenon Producer-director(1) Cecil B. DeMille(2) (1881-1959), affectionately known as ”CB,” was a seminal cofounder of Hollywood, a progenitor of Paramount studios, and an icon of American movies who pioneered numerous innovations in both the arts and sciences of the cinema throughout his seventy-feature film history (Birchard; Cherchi Usai and Codelli; DeMille and Hayne; Edwards; Essoe and Lee; Eyman; Higashi Guide, Culture; Higham; Koury; Louvish; Noerdlinger; Orrison; Ringgold and Bodeen). -

Early technology and experimental work in moving pictures is represented by images about camera and projection devices and their inventors. Items related to movie production include early laboratories, sound, lighting and make-up technology. These items form Photograph Collection P-26 in the Seaver Center for Western History Research. Scope and Content: The Motion Picture Collection is primarily a photograph collection. Actor and actress stills are represented (including portraits by studio photographers), film stills, set stills, and other images, as well as related programs, brochures and clippings. -

From Abbott and Costello in the Foreign Legion to Zorro Rides Again: A Guide to the Filmscripts in the Lilly Library Book Department There are presently over nine hundred scripts in the Lilly Li brary Book department. The movies represented range from the silent version of Ben Hur to Breaking Away. The collection's scope is broad; one can find scripts for great film classics, musicals, mys teries, adventures, shorts, westerns, comedies, and science fiction movies. Many types of filmscripts make up the collection-drafts, cutting continuities, preliminary editions, shooting finals. Gener ally the scripts are accompanied by publicity photos. Although the majority of filmscripts in the collection are for talkies, several scripts are for silent films. The text of a silent film script is devoted primarily to directions for camera shots and de scriptions of the action, and provides title captions instead of dia logue. The earliest script in the collection is for The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (released in 1921), the film that gave Rudolph Valentino his first starring role. The Big Parade (1925), King Vidor's popular film about an average man's experiences at war, estab lished John Gilbert as a top star. The Jazz Singer (1927) was the first full length feature with both singing and talking, starring AI }olson in his first movie role. Wings (1928), considered to be the last of the silent spectaculars, was the first movie to receive an Academy Award. Clara Bow and Charles Rogers starred in this tale of World War I flyers. One of the most lavish films of the silent era was the the 1926 MGM version of Ben Hur, starring Ramon Novarro, directed by William Wellman. -

1 Establishing the Conventions: Cleopatra (1934) Introduction Every cinematic version of antiquity owes something to the films that came before it. In this book, case studies are arranged chronologically to reflect that cultural genealogy. Our approach is to consider the choices that are made when films tell their stories about the ancient world within the social, historical, and cultural contexts of their production. One of the most important contexts will be the evolving discourse of representation created by the films themselves and their audiences. This c hapter will focus on the early stages of this process: the introduction of cinematic conventions that make viewers feel that what they see on screen is a 'true' animation of antiquity-the ancient world brought to life. The process to be described is a highly interactive one, as all evolution ary processes are. A number of factors are working together h ere, most notably c inema production processes and the preferences and social cir cumstances of cinema audiences. As commercially-orientated cultural products, the ways in which films depict and interpret narratives and characters are driven by the perceived tastes of their viewers at the time of release: what has proved popular in the past, what novelty can be introduced, and what audiences will not tolerate. This is not a new idea. It is now a commonplace to note that every kind of cultural text is in some way influenced by a nd reiterates earlier t exts. However, the commercial nature of cinema tends to press down the accelerator pedal on this process. Films are expensive to make, and must recoup their costs. -

NO. 85 he Museum of Modern Art FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modernart SIXTY YEARS OF PARAMOUNT FILMS IN SEVEN-WEEK RETROSPECTIVE AT MUSEUM OF MODERN ART On July 12, 1912, "Queen Elizabeth," starring Sarah Bernhardt, opened at the Lyceum Theatre in New York and 60 years later to the day on Thursday (July 12, 1972), the same picture will be presented by The Museum of Modern Art. It will initiate a new seven- week retrospective— Paramount Pictures: Sixty Years. "Queen Elizabeth," though made in France, was imported to this country by Adolph Zukor, the founder of Paramount Pictures, and it is still circulated by the Museum to colleges and film societies around the country. The picture today stands out in the annals of film history because it introduced the early feature at a time when one- and two- reelers prevailed in the peep shows of the penny arcades. During World War I, European film production diminished and America emerged as a film power. Paramount Pictures became one of the five major film studios, and for the past six decades it has been a source of many important American and European films. Among them are the original "The Ten Commandments" (1923), by Cecil B. DeMille; "Beau Geste" (1926), starring Ronald Colman; Ernst Lubitsch's "Trouble in Paradise" (1932); "The Miracle of Morgan' s Creek" (1944), which brought fame to Preston Sturges; and "Sunset Boulevard" (1950), the Billy Wilder film starring Gloria Swanson in what was virtually a case history of the cinema in terms of a once famous silent film star. -
