NZART Headquarters Info Line Number 21 OCTOBER 2007 Issue #148 Greetings Everyone Welcome to Headquarters-Info-Line a twice-monthly bulletin of news from NZART Headquarters e-mailed directly to Branches and to others that subscribe through the NZART Web Site. This bulletin is also distributed on the amateur radio packet network. ¾ In this issue: ¾ From The NZART Business Manager Debby ZL2TDM: ¾ Callbook 2007/2008 ¾ Membership Promo ¾ Branch, Group Name, Call Sign, Type and Trustee ¾ Procedures for Checking the RSM Database.doc ¾ 2007 Doug Gorman Memorial Frequency Measuring Contest ¾ Results ¾ Comments ¾ Contest News ¾ VHF Contests ¾ HF Contests ¾ RESULTS OF 2007 160M VK/TRANSTASMAN CONTESTS ZL ENTRANTS ¾ RESULTS OF 2007 MEMORIAL CONTEST ¾ Scouting and Guiding in NZ: Canterbury Jamboree or 'CJAM' ¾ Break-In Closing Date Reminder ¾ Auto-Subscription and Un-Subscribe ¾ Dates for Official Broadcast (OB) and Headquarter's Info-Line (HQIL) ******* From the NZART Business Manager Debby ZL2TDM Debby Says... Callbook 2007/2008: What a debacle, and all because Radio Spectrum Group gave us a copy of the database they thought was correct. Yes all information published is sent direct from them. How could we know after all these years of requesting this information and being given it on the proviso that nothing is amended in accordance with the Privacy Act, that it would create such a furor! To say that I have been disappointed, by members and non-members comments is an understatement. I have received unkind and absolute rude comments regarding this years production of call book as has NZART President Bruce ZL2WP, and in many of the cases ownership of the information printed, rests entirely with you. Many times I have advised, if you have changed address or require your details to be withheld, that RSM need to be advised also. Or better still contact them and update your own records. Included with this issue of Info-line is a 'how to update your records' produced for you by Tony ZL1UD. For me this will be the last time I will print this information, I cannot be held responsible for incorrect errors to addresses. Now for those of you who requested your details be withheld - please contact RSM directly as I will no longer enter into discussion in this regard. Phone number 04 472 0030. Membership Promo: Many of you will be aware that NZART Council approved a membership promotional offer to all amateurs. This required again receiving a copy of the information held by Radio Spectrum and comparing it with records we have. NZART database is not equipped to record two call signs, therefore those who hold a primary and secondary call sign and are already members, may have received this special offer by mistake. I apologise if this has happened, however again, to review some 4500 amateurs throughout New Zealand takes a bit of work. Again there is no need to send in rude comments on the application form, not only wasting my time, but also postage costs. Those of you who are guilty of this will I am sure have considered this and penalised us over a small oversight. Furthermore, there are a number of silent keys whose partners received this letter. While we are going to be writing directly to these people to have them relinquish the call sign, if you know of anyone who has recently become a silent key, please ask the spouse or partner to let me know. I need to receive from them in writing, whether the call sign can be removed or if a family member wishes to take it over. Better data integrity can be maintained providing information is passed on to the correct places. Sorry about the negativity of my bit this issue - but I can assure you I have doubted whether my worth as your Business Manager has come to an end. • Nicholl, the Prospector Who Discovered the Martha Lode at Waihi: His Life, Told Largely in His Own Words
WILLIAM SHARMAN CRAWFORD (BILLY) NICHOLL, THE PROSPECTOR WHO DISCOVERED THE MARTHA LODE AT WAIHI: HIS LIFE, TOLD LARGELY IN HIS OWN WORDS Philip Hart Te Aroha Mining District Working Papers No. 57 2016 Historical Research Unit Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences The University of Waikato Private Bag 3105 Hamilton, New Zealand ISSN: 2463-6266 © 2016 Philip Hart Contact: [email protected] 1 WILLIAM SHARMAN CRAWFORD (BILLY) NICHOLL, THE PROSPECTOR WHO DISCOVERED THE MARTHA LODE AT WAIHI: HIS LIFE, TOLD LARGELY IN HIS OWN WORDS Abstract: Billy Nicholl was that rare miner, one who recorded his life. Born in Ireland, when still a boy he arrived in New Zealand in 1862. After his father died at an early age, he acquired a step-father, whom he disliked, with good reason; and in her later years his mother’s mind would fade. From 1868, when he was probably aged 14, until shortly before his death, he was a prospector and miner. Excited by the early Thames mining days, he learnt the skills needed to be a successful prospector, and during the 1870s worked with several mates on the Coromandel field, with some success. After briefly participating in the Te Aroha rush of 1880, he saw from the summit of that mountain the outcrops of the Waihi reefs, and turned his attention to that largely unexplored area. Although there was considerable claim and counter-claim about who first explored the area and who first found gold, Nicholl was the first to discover a payable lode, the famous Martha. After telling his mates of his discovery, they marked out the line of reef and started to develop several claims.

  • Names & Opening & Closing Dates of Railway Stations
Names & Opening & Closing Dates of Railway Stations in New Zealand 1863 to 2010 Researched & Written by Juliet Scoble for the Rail Heritage Trust of New Zealand JRS/291 © Juliet Scoble 4/2010 © Rail Heritage Trust of New Zealand 4/2010 Introduction This document lists the names of railway stations and the dates they were opened and closed. Included are the dates stations were opened for goods and or passenger traffic before the lines were officially opened or handed over to the Working Railways Department. Often the Public Works Department would run goods and passenger services whilst the list was still in their custody. These services were operated by the Public Works Department's ballast engine. Goods were carried in Working Railway's wagons. Occasionally a passenger car or covered wagon fitted with seats were provided, but most times passengers were carried in Public Works' ballast wagons. I have included the stations on the lines owned by the government railways, and private lines where government rolling stock was run thereon. This is an on-going work as I am still looking through files and am finding more names and other information to include in this document. Revised versions will be issued from time to time, the frequency depending upon the new information I find. Juliet Scoble 4/2010 Acknowledgements Most information has been obtained from the Rail Heritage Trust's Station Archive created and researched by Juliet Scoble, and from research specifically undertaken for this document. • Introducing Regional Rapid Rail - Greater Auckland
03/10/2019 Introducing Regional Rapid Rail - Greater Auckland Introducing Regional Rapid Rail Harriet Gale | August 17, 2017 | 668 Comments Greater Auckland is proud to present our proposal for Regional Rapid Rail – an Upper North Island Passenger Network. This post gives you a brief summary of our staged proposal to introduce higher speed inter-city rail to the Upper North Island. The full plan and the detail behind it can be seen in Regional Rapid Rail Report (https://1drv.ms/b/s!AgsEhOIlGW9s105q-375iQxpFDmE) (8mb). This document looks amazing thanks to the design genius of Cornelius from Frontier for the design – who is also behind our website and the CFN 2.0 Report. You can also see a more detailed version of the maps for Stage 1 (https://drive.google.com/open? id=0B9EZXXytda8uaGxxV3lTTkc2X28), Stage 2, (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B9EZXXytda8uQVhrWXRBclBDVGM) and Stage 3. (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B9EZXXytda8ucjlDQm1ha1lmTTA)Feel free to download, print, distribute, draw on, set alight, decorate your room, or re-blog, just remember to cite! Why Regional Rapid Rail? The “Golden Triangle” of Auckland, Waikato and the Bay of Plenty now make up over 50% of New Zealand’s population and are expected to account for over 70% of New Zealand’s growth in the future. If we fail to provide the necessary infrastructure, we will miss out on many of the benets from this coming growth. We need to provide a step change in intercity transit to leverage this growth proactively, rather than reactively waiting for it to congest the Waikato Expressway and Auckland’s Southern Motorway.

1 APPENDIX A BEFORE THE WAIKATO REGIONAL TRANSPORT COMMITTEE IN THE MATTER of the the Land Transport Management Act 2003 AND IN THE MATTER of the review of the Draft Waikato Regional Land Transport Strategy 2011 - 2041 AND IN THE MATTER of submissions to the Draft Waikato Regional Land Transport Strategy 2011 - 2041 JOINT SUBMISSIONS OF: HAURAKI DISTRICT COUNCIL; and MATAMATA-PIAKO DISTRICT COUNCIL Joint Submissions to the RLTS by Hauraki District Council and Matamata-Piako District Council Page 1 of 23 2 December 2010 INTRODUCTION This is a joint submission on the Draft Waikato Regional Land Transport Strategy 2011 – 2041 (RLTS) by the Hauraki and Matamata-Piako District Councils (the Councils). The Councils generally support the RLTS. The document is visionary without being overly ambitious. It is balanced, comprehensive, well-written, well structured, and easy to navigate and understand. The language is positive and encouraging and the tenor of the document reflects a participatory and consultative approach. This bodes well for the successful implementation of the strategy that will ultimately be dependent upon the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and Environment Waikato (EW) working in close partnership, and with “buy in” from, the constituent Territorial Authorities (TAs) in the Region. The Councils consider that the RLTS, while comprehensive, can benefit from the inclusion of further, more detailed, information regarding the origin and destination of freight movements, within and through, the Region. The Councils understand that further investigations into freight movements are currently being undertaken as part of a parallel study into the preferred routes for High Productivity Motor Vehicles.

Malcolm Hardy and those associated with him are covered in another paper. In some cases a mini-biography can be given, but usually the available information permits only a skeletal outline of their lives. Few had experience of mining, and in almost all cases their prospecting or investing reflected a desperate attempt to make some money at a time of considerable financial hardship. Their often feeble attempts at prospecting or arranging for prospecting to be done produced no new discoveries and no ore of any value. Their lives and details of the extent of their involvement in mining are dealt with in alphabetical order. [Note that in places the format has suffered from the paper having been processed by too many computers.] CHARLES FINDLAY ALLAN A Hawkes Bay farmer’s son, Charles Findlay Allan was aged 35 in 1931.1 Briefly a member of the Stoney Creek Prospectors’ Party in 1933, he was granted 100 acres as a prospecting license in that year.2 He was then living in Te Aroha, and unemployed.3 With little if any 1 Birth Certificate of Charles Findlay Allan, 6 April 1896, 1896/14428, BDM; New Zealand Defence Force, Personnel Records, AABK 18805, W5520, 7522, ANZ-W.
