Genetic Relationships among Species of Meretrix (Mollusca: Veneridae) in the Western Pacific Ocean1 Ayako Yashiki Yamakawa,2,3,6 Masashi Yamaguchi,4,5 and Hideyuki Imai4 Abstract: We compared allozymes at 12 loci in 12 populations of six species of Meretrix: M. lusoria ( Japan, Korea, and Taiwan), M. petechialis (China and Ko- rea), M. ovum (Thailand and Mozambique), M. lyrata (China), M. lamarckii ( Ja- pan), and Meretrix sp. A (Okinawa, Japan). Our allozyme results were generally consistent with the major groupings currently recognized within the genus based on morphological characters. However, we found two cryptic or un- described species: Meretrix sp. A from Okinawa and M. cf. lusoria from Taiwan. The shell characters of Meretrix sp. A were similar to those of M. lamarckii, but the species was genetically distinct (Nei’s genetic distance D > 0.845) from all other species examined. The Taiwanese Meretrix population was morphologi- cally indistinguishable from Japanese M. lusoria, although the genetic distance between the Taiwanese and Japanese populations showed a high degree of ge- netic differentiation (D > 0.386). Meretrix lusoria seedlings were introduced into Taiwan from Japan in the 1920s, and Japanese M. lusoria was previously thought to be established as a cultured stock. However, our results suggest that the Taiwanese population may represent a sibling or cryptic species of M. lusoria. Asianhardclams, genus Meretrix (Vener- (Yoosukh and Matsukuma 2001). Within it is the Port of Manila South Harbor, which receives international vessels that could carry non-indigenous macrofouling species. This study describes the species composition of the macrofouling community in South Harbor, Manila Bay during the northeast monsoon season. Nine fouler collectors designed by the North Pacific Marine Sciences Organization (PICES) were submerged in each of five sampling points in Manila Bay on 06 Oct 2017. Three collection plates from each of the five sites were retrieved every four weeks until 06 Feb 2018. Identification was done via morphological and CO1 gene analysis. A total of 18,830 organisms were classified into 17 families. For the first two months, Amphibalanus amphitrite was the most abundant taxon; in succeeding months, polychaetes became the most abundant. This shift in abundance was attributed to intraspecific competition within barnacles and the recruitment of polychaetes. -

PART II METRO MANILA AND ITS 200KM RADIUS SPHERE CHAPTER 7 GENERAL PROFILE OF THE STUDY AREA CHAPTER 7 GENERAL PROFILE OF THE STUDY AREA 7.1 PHYSICAL PROFILE The area defined by a sphere of 200 km radius from Metro Manila is bordered on the northern part by portions of Region I and II, and for its greater part, by Region III. Region III, also known as the reconfigured Central Luzon Region due to the inclusion of the province of Aurora, has the largest contiguous lowland area in the country. Its total land area of 1.8 million hectares is 6.1 percent of the total land area in the country. Of all the regions in the country, it is closest to Metro Manila. The southern part of the sphere is bound by the provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon, all of which comprise Region IV-A, also known as CALABARZON. 7.1.1 Geomorphological Units The prevailing landforms in Central Luzon can be described as a large basin surrounded by mountain ranges on three sides. On its northern boundary, the Caraballo and Sierra Madre mountain ranges separate it from the provinces of Pangasinan and Nueva Vizcaya. In the eastern section, the Sierra Madre mountain range traverses the length of Aurora, Nueva Ecija and Bulacan. The Zambales mountains separates the central plains from the urban areas of Zambales at the western side. The region’s major drainage networks discharge to Lingayen Gulf in the northwest, Manila Bay in the south, the Pacific Ocean in the east, and the China Sea in the west. -

Lessios Accepted: 27 April 2017 Theoretically, species with high population structure are likely to expand their range, because marginal Published: xx xx xxxx populations are free to adapt to local conditions; however, meta-analyses have found a negative relation between structure and invasiveness. The crab Petrolisthes armatus has a wide native range, which has expanded in the last three decades. We sequenced 1718 bp of mitochondrial DNA from native and recently established populations to determine the population structure of the former and the origin of the latter. There was phylogenetic separation between Atlantic and eastern Pacific populations, and between east and west Atlantic ones. Haplotypes on the coast of Florida and newly established populations in Georgia and South Carolina belong to a different clade from those from Yucatán to Brazil, though a few haplotypes are shared. In the Pacific, populations from Colombia and Ecuador are highly divergent from those from Panamá and the Sea of Cortez. In general, populations were separated hundreds to million years ago with little subsequent gene flow. High genetic diversity in the newly established populations shows that they were founded by many individuals. Range expansion appears to have been limited by low dispersal rather than lack of ability of marginal populations to adapt to extreme conditions. The population-genetic constitution of marine invasive species in their native range is increasingly being stud- ied in efforts to determine the source of invasions into new areas (reviews in refs 1–5). -

El intermareal rocoso de Veracruz, México, es un ecosistema que resguarda una gran biodiversidad. Sin embargo, no se ha reconocido su relevancia como con otros ecosistemas marinos. El objetivo de este estudio fue elaborar las primeras listas florística y faunística del intermareal rocoso de El Pulpo, localizada en el municipio de Cazones, Veracruz. Para ello, desde el 2013 a 2016 se efectuaron muestreos en la franja intermareal rocosa en periodos de marea baja para el registro de la biota marina y la recolecta de material biológico para su identificación taxonómica. Además, se realizó una revisión bibliográfica para complementar las listas de especies. Se registraron 51 especies de macroalgas bentónicas, una especie de fanerógama, 186 especies de invertebrados, y cinco especies de vertebrados para un total de 243 especies marinas. Las Rhodophyta son la ficoflora más representada con 29 es- pecies, mientras que el Phylum Mollusca lo es para la fauna con 139 especies. La mayoría de las especies marinas se registraron en el intermareal medio e inferior; por consiguiente la menor riqueza se registró en el intermareal superior y la constituyen algas filamentosas y foliosas, así como moluscos y crustáceos con hábitos ramoneadores y filtradores. -
