Marmalade, Jute, and Video Games: The story of how Dundee, Scotland became the home of a thriving video game development community John Fu March 1, 2000 History 274B Prof. Thomas Hughes 2 Video Games…In Scotland? Japan and the United States are sometimes thought to be the sole creators of the world’s video games. This belief may stem from the fact that the most famous video game console and arcade game manufacturers (such as Atari, Midway, Namco, Nintendo, Sega, Sony, and Capcom) are located in Japan and the US. And with few exceptions, the best-known, most heavily merchandized video game characters (for example, Mario of Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog of the game of the same name) are of American or Japanese origin. Over the past decade, however, many best-selling video games have come from Great Britain. English and Scottish developers have been responsible for such hits as Populous, Syndicate, Lemmings, Goldeneye, and Tomb Raider. Lara Croft, the main character in the Tomb Raider series of adventure games, has become a worldwide star, and Tomb Raider is currently set to be made into a motion picture. Nonetheless, with few characters as recognizable as Mario or Sonic and the absence of a major game console manufacturer, it is remarkable that game development has flourished in specific communities within Great Britain, namely Guildford (near London), northwest England (Liverpool/Birkenhead) and Scotland. Guildford is the home of Bullfrog, a development studio that has created numerous hit games such as Syndicate and Dungeon Keeper, and of a number of companies founded by ex-Bullfrog employees. -

The End Game How Top Developers Sold Their Studios
The End Game How Top Developers Sold Their Studios In November 2002 Angel Studios was purchased by Take Two for $28 million dollars in cash and 235,000 shares of stock. A month earlier Activision purchased Luxoflux for $9 million dollars and 110,000 shares of stock. That same year Infogrames (now Atari) purchased Shiny for a surprising $47 million dollars, and who can forget Microsoft’s purchase of Rare for a whopping $375 million? And the list goes on: Massive Entertainement, Rainbow Studios, Barking Dog, Black Box, Shaba Games, Gray Matter, Treyarch, Outrage, Volition, Digital Anvil, Westwood Studios, and more. All have been purchased by a major publisher and experienced the thrill of the end game. For many developers, selling their studio is the final prize for a race well run. But what do you really know about how a deal goes down and whether or not you are a good prospect? What is it that will make your studio attractive? How will your company be valued? And perhaps most importantly, what can you do to prepare? The information presented in this lecture is based on interviews with key executives from both sides of an acquisition transaction: independent game studios who have been purchased and the publishers who purchased them. Interviews were also conducted with attorneys and investment firms that deal in mergers and acquisitions within the video game and software industries. And finally, research was conducted to quantify specific transactions and acquisition details. DISCLAIMER Mergers and acquisitions are complex business relationships that require the help of legal and accounting professionals. -
Re-Calibrating Steampunk London: Heterotopia and Spatial Imaginaries in Assassins Creed: Syndicate and the Order 1886
humanities Article Re-Calibrating Steampunk London: Heterotopia and Spatial Imaginaries in Assassins Creed: Syndicate and The Order 1886 Helena Esser Department of English, Theatre, and Creative Writing, Birkbeck, University of London, London WC1E 7HX, UK; [email protected] Abstract: Video games have become important but understudied narrative media, which link into as well as perpetuate popular forms of cultural memory. They evoke and mediate space (or the illusion thereof) in unique ways, literally putting into play Doreen Massey’s theory of space as being produced through a multiplicity of trajectories. I examine how Assassins Creed: Syndicate and The Order 1886 (both 2015) configure a neo-Victorian London as a simulated, spatio-temporal imaginary in which urban texture becomes a readable storytelling device in and of itself, and interrogate how their neo-Victorian heterotopias are mediated through a spatial experience. Both games conjure up imaginaries of steampunk London as a counter-site sourced from and commenting on the Victorian city of memory. Through retro-speculation, they re-calibrate neo-Victorian London as a playground offering alternative forms of agency and adventure or as cyberpunk-infused hyper-city. In so doing, they invite the player to re-evaluate, through their spatial experience in such a heterotopic steampunk London, shared imaginaries of ‘the city’ and ‘the Victorian’. Keywords: Assassin’s Creed; cyberpunk; heterotopia; steampunk; The Order 1886; urban imaginaries; Victorian London; video games Citation: Esser, Helena. 2021. 1. Introduction Re-Calibrating Steampunk London: Heterotopia and Spatial Imaginaries Very soon the face of London begins to convulse into a Freemason’s wetdream of in Assassins Creed: Syndicate and The the City as a monologue of temples: parks and homes are demolished to make Order 1886. -
LCN New Player Guide
LCN New Player Guide Welcome to Mob Wars. Now that you’ve found your feet it’s time to get you moving upwards on your way to glory. Along the way you are going to battle tough underworld Bosses, rival mobsters, and challenging Raids. First things first, you are going to need to know how to fight. You should start by going to your Fight List. Here you will see a list of other players in your fight range (10% above or below your level). You can see their current health and mob size which will help you know if you want to take them on. Whenever you attack you will take your Total Attack Power (your Attack, equipped items, and items your mob are using) and put them against your target’s Total Defense Power. The strongest of the two will win the fight and deal the most damage. Your Health also comes into play during a fight. It determines how much damage you can take but also the maximum damage you can deal per attack. Each attack will cost you Stamina and will earn you Experience and Cash. Watch out though, fighting also makes you enemies. By reviewing your Rivals List you can see everyone who had the gall to take you on. Let’s talk about the bigger fish to fry. The underworld is home to plenty of Bosses – tough customers who’ve been around long enough to yield serious loot if you can take them on. 2 Find the bosses available to you on the Bosses Page.
