Stumpf and Gordon Weary OPEN FILE 1997- 1Oa INTRODUCTION - - - - This paper describes selected results of a till in low-lying drift-covered regions of the northern Interior geochemical sampling program conducted in the Old Fort Plateau. For example, prior till and lake sediment Mountain map area (NTS 93 M/1) by the British geochemistry surveys in the Nechako River map ania Columbia Geological Survey as part of a comprehensive (NTS 93F) to the south were successful in delineating survey of the entire Babine copper porphyry belt. The several areas of known mineralization (Cook et al., 1995; results of complimentary lake sediment geochemistry ad Levson and Giles, 1997) and in revealing locations of new bedrock geology mapping progms are presented by Cook mineralized zones. First of all I would like to send prayers to those that have lost a loved one, those that may be dealing with health issues and ask the Lord to bless the entire Nation. It has been a full and busy year even with the pandemic, which is priority for Lake Babine as the safety and wellness of all member is important to us. You will notice the Foundation update that was submitted as a team providing information on the recently signed Foundation Agreement, in addition to the Foundation work LBN has continued to work on other Natural Resource developments. I am happy to report that LBN has finally recruited a Director for Natural Resources and will be introduced at the AGA. There is also a briefing that gives a summary of the mining and exploration development that is happening within the territory. Major resource development projects require approval from BC through an environmental assessment (“EA”) in order to happen. -

In August, 1939, west of Cape St. James, Lat. 52° 49' N, Long. 1340 29' W, three specimens were obtained on a tuna lure and were recorded in 1940 by V. J. Samson. The albacore has been captured off the west coast of Vancouver Island in increasing numbers since 1939. The first large commercial catch was made in 1940. The abundance of the fish has proven to be rather variable in Canadian waters as it has off the California coast. This pelagic fish is distributed throughout all warm to temperate seas. Since no mature individuals have been taken anywhere along the Pacific coast of North America, it would seem that the albacore is a tropical fish whose young make extensive feeding migrations to distant regions and return to the tropics at the onset of maturity. The food consists of schooling small fishes such as anchovies, pilchards, herring, saunes, young mackerel and albacore, blue lanternfish (Tarle- tonbeania crenularis), as well as squid and zooplankton. It is a highly-prized sport and commercial fish and is taken with jigs made of bone, rags and feathers, towed behind boats. The commercial catch in Canadian waters is secured by trolling with bright red feather lures and is frozen for the most part, for subsequent canning. Fishermen sometimes refer to the albacore as the tuna or longfin tuna. -

Here I investigated stressors across ontogenetic shifts in sockeye salmon. First, I examined migration and condition of juvenile sockeye salmon fry as they migrate from the Babine River, British Columbia, to upstream lake rearing habitat. High water velocities increased challenges to successful upstream migration to the lake, but lake rearing habitat was associated with larger fry (30% longer, 150% heavier). Second, I examined how multiple ocean stressors impact freshwater fecundity using a nearly 7-decade dataset from Fraser and Skeena sockeye salmon. Good ocean conditions and low biomass of salmon competitors were associated with younger, larger, more fecund sockeye. -

These reports are narrative outlines of how Indian and non-native populations have used these .rivers, with emphasis on navigability, tidal influence, riparian interests, settlement patterns, commercial use and fishing rights. These historical reports were requested by the Interdepartmental Reserve Boundary Review Committee, a body comprising representatives from Indian Affairs and Northern Development [DIAND], Justice, Energy, Mines and Resources [EMR], and chaired by Fisheries and Oceans. The committee is tasked with establishing a government position on reserve boundaries that can assist in determining the area of application of Indian Band fishing by-laws. Although each report in this series is as different as the waterway it describes, there is a common structural approach to each paper. Each report describes the establishment of Indian eserves along the river; what Licences of Occupation were issued; what instructions were given to surveyors laying out these reserves; how each surveyor laid out each reserve based on his field notes and survey plan; what, if any, fishing rights were considered for the Indian Bands; and how the Indian and non-native populations have used the waterway over the past centuries for both commercial and recreational use.
