December 2014 – Dooral Roundup 3 EDITORS’S REPORT What a Year 2014 has been By Judy Pope

There have been the highest highs and unthinkable tragedies.

e have seen a year of plane incidents from a targeted Wshooting to a full blown disappearance and many other accidents in between. We have had bushfires, droughts and floods and many unpredictable storms and sometimes two or more at the same time in different parts of this great country we live in. Our soldiers have returned to battle zones in the middle east and medical aid has gone to assist in Sierra Leone as the Ebola virus strikes down thousands. Back on home ground the government is battling to get any policy through the senate and is becoming less popular by the week. The latest cuts to the ABC and SBS have impacted on most Australians and I think out of all their decisions will cost them the most dearly and running a close second the proposed GP co-payment. We now have a train station appearing at Cherrybrook and works will shortly commence on the traffic lights at the intersection of Glenhaven Rd and Old Northern Rd, Hallelujah!

I would like to wish all the local businesses and our readers a very merry Christmas and a prosperous and happy 2015.

Residents of Galston and Glenorie are celebrating the start of Water’s Wastewater Scheme, which will allow 625 households to bid farewell to septic tanks and pump-out services.

ne person who is especially pleased is Hornsby Shire O Mayor Steve Russell, who began his career on Council because of this issue. “It was always unfair that these residents, like those at Brooklyn and Cowan, did not have access to such a basic service as sewerage,” Mayor Russell said. Mayor Steve Russell, MP Matt Kean and Minister Kevin Humphries at the first home in “Fixing this was the main reason I first ran for Council and Galston to be connected to the wastewater scheme. it’s great to see it happening. “On behalf of the local residents I offer sincere thanks public amenity and protecting the environment,” Minister to the NSW Government, particularly Minister Kevin Humphries said when he visited Galston this week to see the Humphries and Hornsby MP Matt Kean.” start of the scheme. Businesses Combine for Summer of Shakespeare

The award-winning Shakespeare in the Park series combined with the rustic charm of Bella Vista Farm has been a winning combination for several years.

ow theatre-lovers have even more reason to spend summer nights with Nthe Bard at Bella Vista. The team from the EmptyGlass Wine Bar on Castle Hill Main Street will be on hand with a selection of boutique wines and cheeses for the audience through this summer’s run of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Crucible. Platters can also be ordered in advance online when purchasing tickets. “Hills residents have a great appetite for performing arts and Shakespeare in the Park is a really unique concept that has helped to activate this location and expose thousands of people to the farm,” Mayor Jefferies said. “With the addition of a local business selling fine wines and cheeses, I’m sure that more people than ever will be enticed to attend Shakespeare in the Park this season. Last year’s run of Cyrano de Bergerac was nominated for five Sydney Theatre Awards and won three, including Best Independent Production. Award-winning Director Damien Ryan is a hills local, and saw the potential here - so we’re especially proud of their achievements.”

6 Dooral Roundup – December 2014 Last Timber Bridge set to be Replaced

The last timber bridge in The Hills Shire will be replaced by a modern, concrete structure in 2015.

ouncil has awarded a tender for the design and construction of the new C Mud Island Bridge in Sackville. Hills Shire Mayor Clr Andrew Jefferies said that local governments around NSW had been encouraged to replace all old timber bridges with more secure modern structures and that Council would no longer have to worry about Colonial-era infrastructure. Although it is a little sad that a piece of history will be removed, we must ensure the safety of residents and motorists for decades to come, and a new concrete bridge will ensure that,” Mayor Jefferies said. “This work is expected to be complete by June 2015 and will deliver a better outcome for Sackville residents.”

“The replacement of aging timber bridges has been a challenge for many Councils across the state, however, I am glad that we will no longer need to worry about this older piece of infrastructure.” What’s On @ DCC 662A Old Northern Road, Dural 2158 Tel: 9651 1600 www.duralcountryclub.com.au

8 Dooral Roundup – December 2014 The Girl who Never Gave Up Sara Mills, the Galston High School student has taken the Australian MTB scene by storm proving that hard work, consistency and a passion to triumph will take you to the top!

t the age of A 17, Sara has collected over 6 Australian medals in Mountain Trail Bike competitions, 2 of which are gold! She no longer enters the ‘junior girls’ category more and instead enters the elite/open field. “I grew up in a family where cycling was a way of life! Moving from South Africa to Australia was a massive transition for me and I struggled a lot. But riding my bike brought me a sense of comfort and security from the stresses of a new home. It also gave me a sense of identity- I was called the bike girl and I loved it!” At the age of 15 Sara decided she wanted to start riding more, then at 16 she wanted to start competing. Spurred on by the encouragement of a local cyclist who described her as a ‘hill climber’, Sara was accepted into the Western Sydney Academy of Sport for road cycling for 2013 and 2014. Sara quickly made a name for herself, claiming 2 NSW State titles and gold medals. “My real passion is on the dirt though, I love being out in the early morning smashing the trails. I compete in ‘Cross Country Mountain Biking’; I like the marathon style events which cover distances from 50-200km and I’d like to give stage MTB racing a shot one day.” Sara currently rides for Jet Black MTB and hopes to ride for the JBRacing Team. She says her idols in the cycling world are Australian cyclists Jo Hodson, Imogen Smith and Cadel Evans, and European cyclists Jenny Rissveds and Niño Schuter.

Although passionate about school, cooking, coffee and her family, if you asked Sara what she was going to do tomorrow morning, the answer would be simple: “I’m going riding!”

10 Dooral Roundup – December 2014 THE WAY WE WERE

LOCAL PAPERS REPORT, DECEMBER 2014. Dural and District Historical Society Our Daily Bread When setting up a new settlement, one of the first problems that has to be solved is how to feed the population.

he early years of Sydney were difficult, T and explorers were sent out to find suitable land to grow wheat and corn in particular. Parramatta and the Hawkesbury district were ideal, until some disastrous floods at Windsor made crop growing difficult. In 1802 Governor King chose some higher ground and declared about 34,000 acres of land at Castle Hill and to the north, as Crown Land. He established the Government farm at Castle Hill, mainly to grow wheat for the growing population. Ben Singleton set up his mill to grind the wheat on the narrowest part of the Hawkesbury River, so that the tides coming in and out could turn his mill stone. Within this last year they have been excavating on the Castle Hill Park site for the North West Railway. The huge pile of soil they were digging up was beautiful rich dark brown, ideal for agriculture. Yes, Governor King picked an ideal spot! In later years, in the 1890’s the Hills district supported the largest citrus growing area in the state. A bakery is an essential part of the community, and was always one of the first businesses to be established in any area. One necessity for baking bread is fire wood for the ovens. Many successful business men (such as Johnny Allan) have started out by carting the wood to the local bakery. The bakery at Galston was situated just west of the present Newsagent where the present road is. Down this road there is a patch which keeps subsiding. It is probably the site of an old well at the back of the bakery, or maybe a “long-drop dunny”! Galston still has it’s own bakery. David Goode started his Bakery in June 2001, in the rear of the Garage, where the Aldi shop is now. He moved to the present site in January 2007. Round Corner has had a Bakery for many years. In the 1960’s the Waldhaus family had a bakery towards the back of the shops, about where the delivery station for Woolworths is now. They delivered bread to households 6 days a week to a large area of Dural. Remember when the baker, the milkman, the grocer and the butcher home delivered? The Waldhaus family built the block of shops where Mode Property and Subway are now. There was residential accommodation on the first floor. The baker at Glenorie, Rob Pirina, has plans for setting up a Bakery Museum as he has acquired much old bakers equipment and hopes to be able to display it Well another year has flown by! History Cottage will be closed from 4pm on Wednesday December 10th to Wednesday January 14th at 1pm. Remember that there is much local history to be explored at the cottage, and you will always be welcome to come and explore.

We need more people to come and tell their stories, particularly we would like to record the names of the local bakers and to share stories of this fascinating district.Happy Christmas to you all.

Market Day in Year 5 The Hills Grammar Year 5 classrooms were a-buzz with spruikers, music, excitement and customers of all ages. Market Day was the culmination of some serious study and research into how economies rely on systems of production, exchange and consumption of goods and services. The students through their International Baccalaureate Primary Years inquiry have looked at the intricacies of taking a product to market, the dynamics of supply and demand and the relationship of profit and loss. All funds raised will be donated to Myla Swallow’s project, “CLEAN WATER INITIATIVE: Pure Start”, looking at and addressing the issue of formula-fed infant mortality linked to baby bottle sterilization in the developing world.
