  • Donald Trump Shoots the Match1 Sharon Mazer
Donald Trump Shoots the Match1 Sharon Mazer The day I realized it can be smart to be shallow was, for me, a deep experience. —Donald J. Trump (2004; in Remnick 2017:19) I don’t care if it’s real or not. Kill him! Kill him! 2 He’s currently President of the USA, but a scant 10 years ago, Donald Trump stepped into the squared circle, facing off against WWE owner and quintessential heel Mr. McMahon3 in the “Battle of the Billionaires” (WrestleMania XXIII). The stakes were high. The loser would have his head shaved by the winner. (Spoiler alert: Trump won.) Both Trump and McMahon kept their suits on—oversized, with exceptionally long ties—in a way that made their heads appear to hover, disproportionately small, over their bulky (Trump) and bulked up (McMahon) bodies. As avatars of capitalist, patriarchal power, they left the heavy lifting to the gleamingly exposed, hypermasculinist bodies of their pro-wrestler surrogates. McMahon performed an expert heel turn: a craven villain, egging the audience to taunt him as a clueless, elitist frontman as he did the job of casting Trump as an (unlikely) babyface, the crowd’s champion. For his part, Trump seemed more mark than smart. Where McMahon and the other wrestlers were working around him, like ham actors in an outsized play, Trump was shooting the match: that is, not so much acting naturally as neglecting to act at all. He soaked up the cheers, stalked the ring, took a fall, threw a sucker punch, and claimed victory as if he (and he alone) had fought the good fight (WWE 2013b).

  • Kho-Kho and Combative Sports Like Judo and Wrestling
TEAM GAMES AND PORTS 7 S II In the previous chapter, we have discussed team games like Football, Hockey, Basketball, Cricket and Volleyball. This chapter includes Kabaddi, Kho-Kho and Combative sports like Judo and Wrestling. KABADDI Kabaddi is an indigenous game which is popular in India. It is a simple and inexpensive game and does not require a big playing area or any equipment. This game is popular in the villages and small towns in India. It is played throughout Asia with minor modifications. Kabaddi is quite new to the other parts of the world. It was known by various names in different parts of India. For example, Chedugudu or Gudu- gudu in Southern parts of India, Ha-du-du (Men), Chu-kit- kit (Women) in Eastern India, Hu-tu-tu in Maharashtra in western India and Kabaddi in Northern India. It is a game of attack and defense. The two teams occupy opposite halves of a field and take turn in sending a ‘Raider’ into the other half. In order to win points, members of the opposite team are tagged and the raider tries to return to half, holding the breath and chanting, “Kabaddi, Kabaddi, Kabaddi”. Fig. 7.1: Children playing kabaddi 2021–22 Chap-7.indd 111 8/24/2020 11:41:01 AM History According to some historians Kabaddi might have developed during prehistoric times when human beings were forced to defend themselves from sudden attacks from ferocious beasts. There is also another school of thought, in India, which believes that this game is a version of Chakravyuha, Do You Know? used in Mahabharata.

  • Origins of Wrestling
Origins of Wrestling Wrestling is probably the oldest of all sports and has been depicted in cave paintings dating back 15,000 years. It was a sport practiced in many ancient societies. The first wrestling matches were likely part of military training. The Ancient Greeks were the most prolific wrestlers, and they elevated it to a physical art form. They realized that wrestling is like playing chess with your body, utilizing techniques and moves to outwit your opponent and, in the process, dominate him. The Greeks also created the Olympic Games, and wrestling was one of only a few events featured in the very first Games in the eighth century B.C. Later, with the fall of the Greek Empire in the fifth century A.D., the Olympic Games ceased, and the sport became less of an art form (reverting to its more militaristic beginnings). In time, both styles spread to the Roman Empire and beyond. When the Olympics resumed in 1896, one of the first sports offered was wrestling. 1904 Olympic Wrestling Match Wrestling in the Americas Many Native American tribes practiced wrestling, but little is known about their distinct styles, which are likely to have varied from tribe to tribe. While the styles may have been different, the goal was the same -- to become skilled warriors. During the 1700’s, wrestling graduated from a form of combat into a genuine spectator sport. It was the major contact sport among men of all classes in America. The wrestling style of the day was collar and elbow, named for the starting position.

  • An Overview of the Wrestling Combats in the Early Literary Texts
International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Vol. 3 No. 5; March 2013 Sport And Literature: An Overview of the Wrestling Combats in the Early Literary Texts Ana Penjak University of Split Faculty of Kinesiology Department of Foreign Languages Croatia Hrvoje Karnincic University of Split Faculty of Kinesiology Department of Combat Sports Croatia Abstract Sport has always inspired different artists, starting from the art of painting and the art of sculpture to literature. Form its early beginnings, different wrestling combats have been described in literary texts. Some of them are real wrestling combats and some of them are symbolic. The aim of this study was to present, in the chronological order, wrestling combats in epic texts in different cultures. For their analysis, the authors have chosen ten texts from the Mesopotamian to Middle ages literature. Yet for all these challenges, the authors believe that this study of literary representation of wrestling was worthwhile because it provided us insight into the ways which literature and sport were always connected. Key words: literature; sport; wrestling 1. Introduction: Culture and play – the entire lifestyle of a society Umbero Eco once wrote ‘‘Sport is Man, Sport is Society‖ wishing to emphasize that sport represents a central cultural place in the mankind civilization (Eco, 1994). Ethimologically, the word sport comes from the Latin word deporto (deportare), i.e. to carry around, to deliver, and to convey. Referring to Eco‘s words, sport and physical activities can be traced to the beginnings of recorded history i.e. from the days when people organized fests and various games.
