The title of this issue is a theme found to be a common thread throughout the contributions: How can global challenges be successfully addressed through local actions? This notion is Corrie Griffith not new, but continues to be heard as an important challenge within the Global Environmental Executive Officer 480.965.6771 Change community. Cities, although small in terms of percentage of the Earth’s surface (3%), 480.727.9680 have profound influences beyond their boundaries — e.g., with respect to GHG emissions, [email protected] natural resources, ecosystems, markets and economies, information flows, etc. How we influence development and urbanization over the next few decades will thus be critical for human well- being and the global environment.     FOREWORD This Slum Settlement Profile comes at an opportune time – a time when the city of Kampala is experiencing unprecedented growth in the history of Uganda. This growth and expansion is visible through the mushrooming of informal settlements across the different divisions of Kampala, especially in the low-lying areas of the city. This expansion has definitely exerted enormous pressure on land, with the poor occupying open spaces and the rich pushing the poor out of settlements for commercial and more formalised developments. The urban infrastructure (services and utilities) has not been spared as many residents demand for better quality water, sewer/ sanitation facilities, electricity, roads, security, and proper solid waste management systems. While the city still grapples with serving the existing communities, there are thousands that are flocking to the city in search of employment opportunities and better services. The invisible challenge for both the city and the communities has been lack of data/ information concerning the informal settlements, leading to a very wide gap between the plans and the priorities for the slum residents. The variables looked at in this Slum Profile include, among other factors, Security of Tenure, Housing, Water and Sanitation, Economic Activities, Accessibility, Drainage, and Solid Waste Management. Perhaps, the most outstanding and profound aspect is that this Slum Profile is not a collection of information from lawyers, teachers, doctors, or academicians, but rather ideas from the real slum dwellers who interface with the day-to- day challenges of slum life. BMC Public Health (2019) 19:203 https://doi.org/10.1186/s12889-019-6528-4 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Health care waste management among health workers and associated factors in primary health care facilities in Kampala City, Uganda: a cross-sectional study Solomon Tsebeni Wafula1* , Julian Musiime2 and Frederick Oporia1 Abstract Background: Healthcare wastes (HCWs) are one of the most hazardous wastes globally; second to only radiation waste. HCW management needs to be prioritized because of the devastating effects on human health and environment if not well managed. Health workers play a crucial role in management of HCWs. This study investigated the management of HCWs among health workers and associated factors in primary health care facilities in Kampala City, Uganda. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional health facility survey in 8 primary health care facilities in Kampala City from March to April 2017. We interviewed health workers who provided data on socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge, attitudes and practices on HCW management. Prevalence ratios (PRs) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals were used as a measure of association between HCW management and associated factors. The PRs were obtained using a multivariable modified Poisson regression using a generalized linear model of Poisson family with a logarithm as the canonical link function, with robust standard errors while applying a forward elimination method. Results: A total of 200 health workers responded to the survey; Knowledge of HCW management was high 143 (71.5%, 95% CI (65.2–77.8)). About 160 (80.0%) wore appropriate personal protective wear when handling HCWs.

Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Members, 1..0 INTRODUCTION l.l Flooding in Kampala and the Metropolitan Area Madam Speaker and Honorable Colleagues; you may note that the ongoing rainy season has caused flooding in various parts of Kampala and the Metropolitan Area. The floods have led to widespread destruction of property and livelihoods, disruption of business and economic activities and loss of lives. For instance, on Sunday 26th Muy 2019, a number of areas flooded, roads were cut off and a lot of property was destroyed in Kampala and surrounding areas. Eight (8) people are believed to have lost their lives in the areas of Kikajjo, Lubowa and Lufuka all located in Masajja and Bunamwaya divisions. According to relief Agencies, over 500 households were affected by the floods of 26th Muy 2019. The most affected villages include: Lubowa, Lufuka, Kazinga, Wakulekana, Btzali, Masajja-Kibira-B, Lwasa bridge way kiangle, Kabuma,Katongo,Kikajjo, Katwe, Makindye- Ssabagabo (in Wakiso but in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan area; GKMA). In Kampala area, the floods have had a devastating effect on the lives of people, livestock, businesses, households and disrupted transport in areas like Bwaise, Nateete, Nalukolongo, Bugolobi, Nakawa industrial area and Kyambogo. Many people have been left homeless and others have had to move to neighboring villages for shelter with relatives and friends. Schools 1. too have been affected and this has an impact on the education of children in the affected areas.
