Dear Friends, It has been a full year since COVID-19 disrupted life as we knew it and many of us are still experiencing hardships, losses, and an increased toll on our mental health. During this time, our young adult constituency has also been adversely impacted by racial unrest and political divisiveness. Through all of this, Active Minds stayed strong and focused, evolving to provide HALF of all mental health issues begin by age 14. the tools needed to enhance young adult wellness, no matter what the year brought them. We innovated and reimagined. And we led. THREE QUARTERS begin by age 24. We created virtual spaces where members of our community could gather safely to learn how to support their own needs and those of their friends, family and colleagues. Our network of advocates in high schools, on college campuses, and in work spaces ensured that even in our online and virtual settings the message THIS IS WHY that it’s okay to not be okay was heard loud and clear. we have to change the conversation. ACTIVE MINDS WILL CONTINUE to keep the country’s attention on the very important mental health culture changes underway. The conversation about mental health and its new place at the center of the national dialogue is critical... but will only stay at the top of the list of priorities if we keep it there. I hope you will read through this impact report to find out how Active Minds continues to change lives. It is because of friends, volunteers, donors and mental health advocates like you that we can continue to drive our movement forward for those who need it most. Thank you. Sincerely, Alison K. Malmon Steven A. Lerman Founder and Executive Director Chair, Board of Directors 1 Innovative & Forward-thinking 2020 was not ‘business as usual’ for Active Minds. Our work this year proved that lasting, widespread change means the ability to innovate and meet people where they are — with language and tools that speak specifically to them. Mental Health for Gamers Active Minds and Riot Games brought resources to the gaming community, including tips & tricks for maintaining balance, overcoming tilt (frustration/ anger), and helping a gamer who may be struggling. Training for Influencers In partnership with Kindred, Active Minds trained more than 100 social media and entertainment influencers on how to incorporate helpful mental health content into their platforms. Resources for Faculty Data shows students turn to faculty as a trusted resource for mental health support. Along with the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE), Active Minds released a new resource guide providing practical approaches for faculty to set supportive classroom environments. 2 Actor Zac Levi keynotes the Active Minds National Conference, which hosted a record-breaking 600 ATTENDEES in February 2020. 3 Centering Young Adult Voices Active Minds led and guided our partners in prioritizing the needs and perspectives of young adults when setting mental health policies and practices that affect this demographic, including focused efforts targeting marginalized communities. Your Voice is Your Power To help establish campus cultures that reflect and promote BIPOC student mental health — a demographic statistically less likely to receive mental health support than their white peers — Your Voice is Your Power launched in the fall with partnership from just. Transforming First-Year Experiences We worked with the National Resource Center to create recommendations for institutions to kick off conversations about mental health right away during First-Year Experience programs, setting a sense of support and understanding from day-one on campus. High School-Focused PSA: It’s Okay High schoolers told us early in the pandemic that they didn’t feel the mental health messages circulating at the time represented their experience. We met that with “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay,” viewed 80,000+ times, thanks 4 to donors Glenn Greenberg and Linda Vester. Active Minds @Work, our newest program offering that launched in 2019, supported companies like Niantic, Meltwater, and City Year who saw the value of creating a mental health culture of colleague- to-colleague, and even manager-to-employee, in addition to instituting company policies and benefits that serve their employees. Thanks to support from the Bruce C. Abrams Foundation, this program continues to grow and iterate as more employees return to the workplace in 2021. With hospitality workplaces hit especially hard by safety protocols of the COVID-19 pandemic, Active Minds also partnered in 2020 with Optum to create a guide specifically for restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and hotels — all major employers of young adults — to address the mental wellbeing of their front-line employees. 6 Justin and Hailey Bieber generously donated $100,000 to Active Minds in 2020 in honor of the launch of their Facebook Watch show. Then, Justin Bieber and Benny Blanco promoted Active Minds’ mental health resources in connection with the release of their new song, "Lonely." The recent protests and public reaction to George Floyd’s murder are a testament to many individu- als’ deep commitment to renewing the founding ideals of the republic. But there is another, more dangerous, side to this debate—one that seeks to rehabilitate toxic political notions of racial superiority, stokes fear of immigrants and minorities to inflame grievances for political ends, and attempts to build a notion of an embat- tled white majority which has to defend its power by any means necessary. These notions, once the preserve of fringe white nationalist groups, have increasingly infiltrated the mainstream of American political and cultural discussion, with poi- sonous results. For a starting point, one must look no further than President Donald Trump’s senior adviser for policy and chief speechwriter, Stephen Miller. In December 2019, the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Hatewatch published a cache of more than 900 emails2 Miller wrote to his contacts at Breitbart News before the 2016 presidential election.

  • The Donald Trump-Rupert Murdoch Relationship in the United States
The Donald Trump-Rupert Murdoch relationship in the United States When Donald Trump ran as a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, Rupert Murdoch was reported to be initially opposed to him, so the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post were too.1 However, Roger Ailes and Murdoch fell out because Ailes wanted to give more positive coverage to Trump on Fox News.2 Soon afterwards, however, Fox News turned more negative towards Trump.3 As Trump emerged as the inevitable winner of the race for the nomination, Murdoch’s attitude towards Trump appeared to shift, as did his US news outlets.4 Once Trump became the nominee, he and Rupert Murdoch effectively concluded an alliance of mutual benefit: Murdoch’s news outlets would help get Trump elected, and then Trump would use his powers as president in ways that supported Rupert Murdoch’s interests. An early signal of this coming together was Trump’s public attacks on the AT&T-Time Warner merger, 21st Century Fox having tried but failed to acquire Time Warner previously in 2014. Over the last year and a half, Fox News has been the major TV news supporter of Donald Trump. Its coverage has displayed extreme bias in his favour, offering fawning coverage of his actions and downplaying or rubbishing news stories damaging to him, while also leading attacks against Donald Trump’s opponent in the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton. Ofcom itself ruled that several Sean Hannity programmes in August 2016 were so biased in favour of Donald Trump and against Hillary Clinton that they breached UK impartiality rules.5 During this period, Rupert Murdoch has been CEO of Fox News, in which position he is also 1 See e.g.

Capitol Insurrection At Center Of Conservative Movement: At Least 43 Governors, Senators And Members Of Congress Have Ties To Groups That Planned January 6th Rally And Riots. SUMMARY: On January 6, 2021, a rally in support of overturning the results of the 2020 presidential election “turned deadly” when thousands of people stormed the U.S. Capitol at Donald Trump’s urging. Even Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, who rarely broke with Trump, has explicitly said, “the mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the President and other powerful people.” These “other powerful people” include a vast array of conservative officials and Trump allies who perpetuated false claims of fraud in the 2020 election after enjoying critical support from the groups that fueled the Capitol riot. In fact, at least 43 current Governors or elected federal office holders have direct ties to the groups that helped plan the January 6th rally, along with at least 15 members of Donald Trump’s former administration. The links that these Trump-allied officials have to these groups are: Turning Point Action, an arm of right-wing Turning Point USA, claimed to send “80+ buses full of patriots” to the rally that led to the Capitol riot, claiming the event would be one of the most “consequential” in U.S. history. • The group spent over $1.5 million supporting Trump and his Georgia senate allies who claimed the election was fraudulent and supported efforts to overturn it. • The organization hosted Trump at an event where he claimed Democrats were trying to “rig the election,” which he said would be “the most corrupt election in the history of our country.” • At a Turning Point USA event, Rep.

  • Gender, Identity Framing, and the Rhetoric of the Kill in Conservative Hate Mail
Communication, Culture & Critique ISSN 1753-9129 ORIGINAL ARTICLE Foiling the Intellectuals: Gender, Identity Framing, and the Rhetoric of the Kill in Conservative Hate Mail Dana L. Cloud Department of Communication Studies, University of Texas, Austin, TX 78712, USA This article introduces the concept of identity framing by foil. Characteristics of this communicative mechanism are drawn from analysis of my personal archive of conservative hate mail. I identify 3 key adversarial identity frames attributed to me in the correspondence: elitist intellectual, national traitor, and gender traitor. These identity frames serve as foils against which the authors’ letters articulate identities as real men and patriots. These examples demonstrate how foiling one’s adversary relies on the power of naming; applies tremendous pressure to the target through identification and invocation of vulnerabilities; and employs tone and verbal aggression in what Burke identified as ‘‘the kill’’: the definition of self through the symbolic purgation and/or negation of another. doi:10.1111/j.1753-9137.2009.01048.x I was deluged with so much hate mail, but none of it was political ....It was like, ‘‘Gook, chink, cunt. Go back to your country, go back to your country where you came from, you fat pig. Go back to your country you fat pig, you fat dyke. Go back to your country, fat dyke. Fat dyke fat dyke fat dyke—Jesus saves.’’—Margaret Cho, ‘‘Hate Mail From Bush Supporters’’ (2004) My question to you. If you was [sic] a professor in Saudi Arabia, North Korea, Palestinian university or even in Russia. etc. How long do you think you would last as a living person regarding your anti government rhetoric in those countries? • Olin Foundation in 1953, Olin Embarked on a Radical New Course
THE CHRONICLE REVIEW How RightWing Billionaires Infiltrated Higher Education By Jane Mayer FEBRUARY 12, 2016 If there was a single event that galvanized conservative donors to try to wrest control of higher education in America, it might have been the uprising at Cornell University on April 20, 1969. That afternoon, during parents’ weekend at the Ithaca, N.Y., campus, some 80 black students marched in formation out of the student union, which they had seized, with their clenched fists held high in blackpower salutes. To the shock of the genteel Ivy League community, several were brandishing guns. At the head of the formation was a student who called himself the "Minister of Defense" for Cornell’s AfroAmerican Society. Strapped across his chest, Pancho Villastyle, was a sashlike bandolier studded with bullet cartridges. Gripped nonchalantly in his right hand, with its butt resting on his hip, was a glistening rifle. Chin held high and sporting an Afro, goatee, and eyeglasses reminiscent of Malcolm X, he was the face of a drama so infamous it was regarded for years by conservatives such as David Horowitz as "the most disgraceful occurrence in the history of American higher education." John M. Olin, a multimillionaire industrialist, wasn’t there at Cornell, which was his alma mater, that weekend. He was traveling abroad. But as a former Cornell trustee, he could not have gone long without seeing the iconic photograph of the armed protesters. What came to be known as "the Picture" quickly ricocheted around the world, eventually going on to win that year’s Pulitzer Prize.

Lance Bennett, Chair Matthew J. Powers Kirsten A. Foot Adrienne Russell Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Communication University of Washington Abstract The Political Logic of the Radical Right Media Sphere in the United States Yunkang Yang Chair of the Supervisory Committee: W. Lance Bennett Department of Communication Democracy in America is threatened by an increased level of false information circulating through online media networks. Previous research has found that radical right media such as Fox News and Breitbart are the principal incubators and distributors of online disinformation. In this dissertation, I draw attention to their political mobilizing logic and propose a new theoretical framework to analyze major radical right media in the U.S. Contrasted with the old partisan media literature that regarded radical right media as partisan news organizations, I argue that media outlets such as Fox News and Breitbart are better understood as hybrid network organizations. This means that many radical right media can function as partisan journalism producers, disinformation distributors, and in many cases political organizations at the same time. They not only provide partisan news reporting but also engage in a variety of political activities such as spreading disinformation, conducting opposition research, contacting voters, and campaigning and fundraising for politicians. In addition, many radical right media are also capable of forming emerging political organization networks that can mobilize resources, coordinate actions, and pursue tangible political goals at strategic moments in response to the changing political environment.

The Long New Right and the World It Made Daniel Schlozman Johns Hopkins University [email protected] Sam Rosenfeld Colgate University [email protected] Version of January 2019. Paper prepared for the American Political Science Association meetings. Boston, Massachusetts, August 31, 2018. We thank Dimitrios Halikias, Katy Li, and Noah Nardone for research assistance. Richard Richards, chairman of the Republican National Committee, sat, alone, at a table near the podium. It was a testy breakfast at the Capitol Hill Club on May 19, 1981. Avoiding Richards were a who’s who from the independent groups of the emergent New Right: Terry Dolan of the National Conservative Political Action Committee, Paul Weyrich of the Committee for the Survival of a Free Congress, the direct-mail impresario Richard Viguerie, Phyllis Schlafly of Eagle Forum and STOP ERA, Reed Larson of the National Right to Work Committee, Ed McAteer of Religious Roundtable, Tom Ellis of Jesse Helms’s Congressional Club, and the billionaire oilman and John Birch Society member Bunker Hunt. Richards, a conservative but tradition-minded political operative from Utah, had complained about the independent groups making mischieF where they were not wanted and usurping the traditional roles of the political party. They were, he told the New Rightists, like “loose cannonballs on the deck of a ship.” Nonsense, responded John Lofton, editor of the Viguerie-owned Conservative Digest. If he attacked those fighting hardest for Ronald Reagan and his tax cuts, it was Richards himself who was the loose cannonball.1 The episode itself soon blew over; no formal party leader would follow in Richards’s footsteps in taking independent groups to task.

  • January 29, 2014 To: House Republican Colleagues From: Ranking Member Jeff Sessions
MEMO: IMMIGRATION AND THE GOP AGENDA JANUARY 29, 2014 TO: HOUSE REPUBLICAN COLLEAGUES FROM: RANKING MEMBER JEFF SESSIONS President Obama—after five years of openly and aggressively defying federal immigration law—is now demanding that House Republicans adopt an immigration plan he has no intention of enforcing. Republicans must end the lawlessness—not surrender to it—and they must defend the legitimate interests of millions of struggling American workers. Attached to this memo are the key findings from my staff on the Budget and Judiciary Committees regarding the negative impact that the immigration proposals moving through Congress would have on American workers, taxpayers, and the rule of law. You will also find objective polling data—not misleading polls from special interests—demonstrating the depth to which these measures are repudiated by working and middle class voters from all backgrounds. And finally, included is a summary document of the opposition from conservative thought leaders to the proposals under consideration. Where We Stand Coordinating with a small group of the nation’s most powerful special interests, last year President Obama and Senate Democrats forced through an immigration bill which can only be described as a hammer blow to the American middle class. Not only would it grant work permits to millions of illegal immigrants at a time of record joblessness, it would also double the annual flow of new immigrant workers and provide green cards to more than 30 million permanent residents over the next decade. These new workers, mostly lesser-skilled, will compete for jobs in every sector, industry, and occupation in the U.S.

  • Trump's New Face of Power in America
Trump’s New Face of Power in America (updated and revised June 2021) Bob Hanke1 York University, Toronto, Canada Abstract: This article proposes that the advent of Trumpism was an historical moment of danger that compels us to analyze the micropolitics of the present. In the first part, I describe the constellation that gave rise to Trumpism. In the second part, I recall Goffman’s concept of face-work and discuss how it remains relevant for describing Trump’s aggressive face-work. In the third part, I take Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of faciality as a point of departure for understanding micro- fascism. As an abstract machine, Trump’s faciality engendered and diffused fascisizing micropolitics around a messenger/disrupter in chief. It worked in connection with a landscape and relative to a collective assemblage of enunciation that extracted a territory of perception and affect. In the micropolitics of the present, the defining feature of Trumpism was how the corrupt abuse of power and the counterforces limiting his potency collided on an ominous, convulsive political reality TV show that threatened US democracy. Keywords: Trumpism, face-work, faciality, assemblage, micropolitics, impeachment, coronavirus pandemic We are all sufferers from history, but the paranoid is a double sufferer, since he is afflicted not only by the real world, with the rest of us, but by his fantasies as well. – Richard Hofstadter (1964) When a man unprincipled in private life desperate in his fortune, bold in his temper, possessed of considerable talents,
