Snow was fun. Snow was enjoyable. Snow gave you the opportunity to make snowmen, have snowball fights, or go tobogganing. And we didn’t get nearly enough of it. So when it snowed it was exciting. It was something to be welcomed with joy. But grown-ups didn’t seem to think so. They complained about it. They hoped it wouldn’t snow, and grumbled when it did. They thought it was a nuisance. Now I’ve grown up myself I can see both sides. I understand why many of us really don’t like the snow (however much we may say we want a ‘white Christmas’). I know the frustrations when bad weather means that we can’t do what we had planned to do, or when others can’t do what we were relying on them to do. And there are obvious problems for those whose jobs involve trying to get about or working outside, or who have a long commute. But if I’m honest, then I still side with the children. These last few weeks we have seen more snow than I think I have ever experienced before — certainly in my adult life. By the time you read this that may be just a memory, or we may have had yet more. But every time it’s happened, or been promised, then (whatever difficulties it has caused to my own plans) deep down I have had that frisson of excitement that I used to get as a child.

The Commission has decided to give effect to the recommendations. A draft of the instrument has been laid before Parliament and a period of forty days has expired since the day on which it was laid and neither House has resolved that the instrument be not made. If anyone has a busy agenda, he has. Simon arrived just as the new national planning policies and the Localism Act were coming into force. As a draft, the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) created a storm of protest. It was seen as a developers’ charter and raised fears for the future of our countryside and the green belt. A lot has been done through consultation to appease the protestors by softening the approach and offering more protection but the final version, published in March, is still fervently pro-growth. A key element of the Localism Act is the creation of Neighbourhood Plans by Neighbourhood Forums and the Borough is pioneering this process as a “vanguard authority”. Neighbourhood Forums enable residents to participate directly in planning the future of their area. From another perspective, they are also meant to encourage local communities to overcome their natural Nimbyism and work together to deliver opportunities for new development. So here too the agenda is growth. To ensure conformity in the process – and some level of sanity – all new community plans and proposals must align with an overarching Local Plan or Core Strategy which the local authority is obliged to have. And that’s another action point on Mr Hurrell’s list.

    The Victorian origins of Pinkneys Green Cricket Club Thirty five years ago, Pinkneys Green Cricket Club was preparing to celebrate its centenary. President’s Day would be given over to a pro-celebrity match. There would be a celebratory cricket week of fixtures, and the year closed with the National Trust planting ten trees along the northern boundary to mark the occasion. 1885 was accepted as the date of formation following the publication in the mid 1970s of a pamphlet about the history of the club. This was written by Roland “Johnny” Walker, the former landlord of the Stag and Hounds pub (now known as the Pinkneys Arms) and President of Pinkneys Green Cricket Club. I have long since wanted to write a fuller history of the club and the opening up of digital archives has made this a more realistic pursuit, particularly as the Maidenhead Advertiser put all its available editions online last year. Coupled with the fantastic British Newspaper Archive, I have already begun to amass a varied range of reports about cricket on the Green, focusing particularly on the late nineteenth century. As often happens research has rather undermined what was accepted as commonly true, and although evidence of Pinkneys Green cricket can be found in the 1880s, the club as we know it today was formed in 1893. Pinkneys Green itself was established as a hamlet in the parish of Cookham in 1650, with its name adopted by the early 1700s. The name derives from Ghilo de Pinkney a Norman knight. He was granted land as a reward for his support for William the Conqueror.
