GST Layton delves into Muskoka’s economic woes By Karen Longwell BRACEBRIDGE - New Democratic Party leader Jack Layton spoke passionately about the concerns and ideas of residents in today’s economic climate during a visit to Muskoka this week. A crowd of about 90 people gathered to attend Layton’s town hall-style meeting at Nipissing University in Bracebridge on March 18. Residents asked questions on topics like attracting manufacturing businesses, green economic initiatives, public dental programs and a more accessible employ- ment insurance program. Layton promised to take what he heard to parliament. He noted that Muskoka has lost some of its most well paying jobs in the manufacturing sector at places like Fenner Dunlop, Dura and Algonquin Automotive. “You lose those jobs in a community and everybody notices it – right down to the corner store, (and) the gro- cery store,” said Layton. Huntsville’s first-place junior team played fourth-place Almaguin Secondary School in the first match. The Hoyas dominated this game and came out with a 10-2 victory. Scoring for Huntsville were Jorge Ortega, Jon Brown, Jon Vande Ende, Aaron Chapman, Duncan O’Brien, Brandon Rae, Luke Alexander (2) and Bruno Roldan (2). The juniors then faced Bracebridge in the championship match. This game was very evenly matched; when the game was over, the Hoyas were victorious with a 2-0 score. Ortega and Rae scored for Huntsville. This was the first time in many years that Huntsville won the MPS cham- pionships for junior boys’ soccer. Huntsville’s first-place senior team played the fourth-place St. Dominic’s team for its first match of the day. This game ended in Huntsville’s favour with a 4-0 win. Roland Tusz and Ben Murat scored the first two goals.

Head coach Mark Joslin, just thirteen games into his tenure with the Tigers, was relieved of his duties last Tuesday along with several members of his coaching staff, including assistant coaches David Mooney, Peter McBride, and goaltending coach John Ceci. Thomson, a former NHLer who purchased the team in the offseason, hired Joslin to replace James Richmond, who took a job with the OHL's Mississauga Steelheads over the summer. Joslin had previously been the bench boss of the OJHL's North York Rangers. He coached the Tigers to a 6-5-2 record, good for second place in the OJHL's North East division. Expectations were high for the 2014-15 regular season champions, who have been riddled with discipline problems this season and are fourth in penalty minutes in the entire league. ?It's difficult to watch undisciplined hockey from a former hockey player's perspective,? said Thomson, who spent the better part of a decade in and out of the NHL. ?Discipline is so key to winning, and I just wasn't seeing it.? Despite the firing, Thomson praises Joslin for his ability to coach and lead a team. ?It just didn't work with this team. Something had to give, and I didn't see everything coming together after sort of unraveling.? The firing came on the back of a 1-2-1 stretch for the Tigers.

It analyzes three development leagues that help contribute to the Major Junior Rosters; The Alberta Midget Hockey League (AMHL), The Greater Toronto Minor Midget Hockey League (GTMMHL), and The Quebec Midget AAA Hockey league (QMAAA). The three Major Junior leagues select players for their teams via a drafting process. When players hit a certain age, they become eligible to be drafted, and teams select the players they believe are the best available to come play for their team. The OHL and the QMJHL draft their players after their 15-year-old season and are eligible to play for their respective clubs in their upcoming 16-year-old season. The Western Hockey league drafts players after their 14-year-old season but players cannot play for their teams until their 16-year-old season as well. Data was collected from the development leagues (AMHL, GTMMHL, QMAAA) over a 5- year period analyzing players selected in the 3 Major Junior drafts and determining if they: played in the CHL, were drafted to the NHL, played Professional Hockey, and if they played until the age of 20.
