Celebrities as Political Representatives: Explaining the Exchangeability of Celebrity Capital in the Political Field Ellen Watts Royal Holloway, University of London Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Politics 2018 Declaration I, Ellen Watts, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Ellen Watts September 17, 2018. 2 Abstract The ability of celebrities to become influential political actors is evident (Marsh et al., 2010; Street 2004; 2012, West and Orman, 2003; Wheeler, 2013); the process enabling this is not. While Driessens’ (2013) concept of celebrity capital provides a starting point, it remains unclear how celebrity capital is exchanged for political capital. Returning to Street’s (2004) argument that celebrities claim to speak for others provides an opportunity to address this. In this thesis I argue successful exchange is contingent on acceptance of such claims, and contribute an original model for understanding this process. I explore the implicit interconnections between Saward’s (2010) theory of representative claims, and Bourdieu’s (1991) work on political capital and the political field. On this basis, I argue celebrity capital has greater explanatory power in political contexts when fused with Saward’s theory of representative claims. Three qualitative case studies provide demonstrations of this process at work. Contributing to work on how celebrities are evaluated within political and cultural hierarchies (Inthorn and Street, 2011; Marshall, 2014; Mendick et al., 2018; Ribke, 2015; Skeggs and Wood, 2011), I ask which key factors influence this process.

Evelyn Palma English 122, Section 471 Miss French July 15, 2013 Is Food Thy Medicine? When I think of summer, I am reminded of being outside and enjoying the warm weather, campfires, the smell of sunblock and chlorine, tan lines, and summer BBQs. Summer BBQs for my family usually include all sorts of delicious dishes from El Salvador and of course the typical American foods such as hamburgers, hotdogs, potato salad; the works. Now that I’m older, I have started thinking about how food plays a role in my life. I have been an on-again, off-again vegan because I want to take care of my body, but I just can’t seem to stay away from the food that I have grown up with like carne asada; Mom and grandma’s cooking is just too good to stop eating it! However, seeing my family members be overweight for most of their lives and how they have been affected by illnesses like cancer, I have started to think about how my environment might play a role in what will happen to me in the future. Could excess consumption of animal-based foods be the culprit or is this a myth? If eating meat is really just a helpless little scapegoat, then I will go out on my porch, shake my fist as joggers run past my house and scream “It’s a lie! It’s a lie!” as I sink my teeth into a mammoth-sized turkey leg. I’m not sure if animal-based foods really are helpless scapegoats or if they are evil villains disguised in various delicious forms like rich, velvety cheese, but I intend to be more informed.

  • British Comedy, Global Resistance: Russell Brand, Charlie Brooker
British Comedy, Global Resistance: Russell Brand, Charlie Brooker, and Stewart Lee (Forthcoming European Journal of International Relations) Dr James Brassett Introduction: Satirical Market Subjects? An interesting facet of the austerity period in mainstream British politics has been the rise (or return) to prominence of an apparently radical set of satirists.1 Comedians like Russell Brand, Charlie Brooker and Stewart Lee have consolidated already strong careers with a new tranche of material that meets a widespread public mood of disdain for the failure and excess of ‘global capitalism’. This can be seen through Brand’s use of tropes of revolution in his Messiah Complex and Paxman Interview, Brooker’s various subversions of the media-commodity nexus in Screenwipe, and Lee’s regular Guardian commentaries on the instrumentalisation of the arts and social critique. While radical comedy is by no means new, it has previously been associated with a punk/socialist fringe, whereas the current batch seems to occupy a place within the acceptable mainstream of British society: BBC programs, Guardian columns, sell out tours, etc. Perhaps a telling indication of the ascendancy of these ‘radical’ comedians has been the growing incidence of broadsheet articles and academic blogs designed to ‘clip their wings’. For example, Matt Flinders has argued that Russell Brand’s move to ‘serious politics’ is undermined by a general decline in the moral power of satire: 1 Numerous people have read and commented on this paper. In particular, I thank Erzsebet Strausz, Lisa Tilley, Madeleine Fagan, Kyle Grayson, Roland Bleiker and Nick Vaughan-Williams. The idea for the paper arose in a series of enjoyable discussions with Alex Sutton and Juanita Elias and I am grateful for their encouragement to develop these ideas.
