Troubled Ethnicities in American Popular Music from Elvis Presley to Eminem
TROUBLED ETHNICITIES IN AMERICAN POPULAR MUSIC FROM ELVIS PRESLEY TO EMINEM Stefan L. Brandt (University of Siegen, Germany / Harvard University) With the commodification of African American culture, Blackness has become an accessory that can be put on like burnt cork and hog fat: baggy pants, overpriced athletic shoes, corn rows or dread locks, gaudy jewelry, swiveling necks, snapping fingers, absent consonants.1 Introduction: Blackface, White Negritude, and Ethnic Identity On July 18, 1953, an 18-year old trucker named Elvis Presley decided to go to the Sun Record Company in Memphis and paid $3.98 to record a demo – a procedure that he repeated in January of 1954. It took another four months until Sun Records founder Sam Phillips, eager to capitalize upon the popularity of African American songs, accidentally discovered one of the tapes and took Presley under contract. Presley’s music, a combination of Rhythm & Blues, hillbilly, gospel, and boogie-woogie, dominated by an uptempo, backbeat-driven rhythm, was an instant success. Some forty years later, American popular music saw another successful ‘hybrid’ artist in the shape of Missouri-born white rapper Marshall Bruce Mathers III, better known as “Eminem” or “Slim Shady.” Like Elvis before him, Eminem cleverly took advantage of the appeal of a ‘black’ music style, in his case HipHop, integrating it into a mass-compatible crossover product. Eminem’s video clips are masterstrokes of ethnic marketing, deploying elements of ‘white trash’ imagery as well as of ‘black’ language and art. 臺大文史哲學報第六十五期 2006年11月頁223~250 臺灣大學文學院 Staging Poetic Justice: Public Spectacle of Private Grief in the Musical Parade Wang, Pao-hsiang∗ Abstract This paper makes inquiries into the 1998 musical Parade by playwright Alfred Uhry and composer Jason Robert Brown, based on the historic case of Leo Frank, a Jewish industrialist from New York running a pencil factory in Atlanta and accused of murdering the 13-year-old girl Mary Phagan in 1913. How can the thorny case be represented with any fidelity on stage when all the facts have not come to light? What can a theatre researcher contribute to or comment on a controversial production of a reproduction of a historical incident that has never ceased to produce great furors over the past 90 years? In the absence of irrefutable legal evidence that could close the case and in the face of contending camps that claim justice on each side, the author will stay above the litigation fray and distance himself from any attempt to pass judgment on the innocence or guilt of people involved in the historic case. Rather, the paper first probes the context surrounding the case, including war, class, race, and to a lesser extent, sexuality by examining it from the perspective of historical legacy, such as the post-bellum South reeling from the repercussions of the Civil War defeat, the regional animosity between the highly industrialized North and New Industrial South, the class antagonism of management and labor in the pencil factory, the ethnic strife between blacks, whites, and Jews, and the conventional bias against the perceived sexual perversion of Jews and blacks.

Listeners Guide To WDAM Radio’s History of Elvis Presley This is the most comprehensive collection ever assembled of Elvis Presley’s “charted” hit singles, including the original versions of songs he covered, as well as other artists’ hit covers of songs first recorded by Elvis plus songs parodying, saluting, or just mentioning Elvis! More than a decade in the making and an ongoing work-in-progress for the coming decades, this collection includes many WDAM Radio exclusives – songs you likely will not find anywhere else on this planet. Some of these, such as the original version of Muss I Denn (later recorded by Elvis as Wooden Heart) and Liebestraum No. 3 later recorded by Elvis as Today, Tomorrow And Forever) were provided by academicians, scholars, and collectors from cylinders or 78s known to be the only copies in the world. Once they heard about this WDAM Radio project, they graciously donated dubs for this archive – with the caveat that they would never be duplicated for commercial use and restricted only to musicologists and scholarly purposes.
