  • Resavoring Cannibal Holocaust As a Mockumentary
hobbs Back to Issue 7 "Eat it alive and swallow it whole!": Resavoring Cannibal Holocaust as a Mockumentary by Carolina Gabriela Jauregui ©2004 "The worst returns to laughter" Shakespeare, King Lear We all have an appetite for seeing, an appétit de l'oeuil as Lacan explains it: it is through our eyes that we ingest the Other, the world.1 And in this sense, what better way to introduce a film on anthropophagy, Ruggero Deodato's 1979 film, Cannibal Holocaust, than through the different ways it has been seen.2 It seems mankind has forever been obsessed with the need to understand the world through the eyes, with the need for visual evidence. From Thomas the Apostle, to Othello's "ocular proof," to our television "reality shows," as the saying goes: "Seeing is believing." We have redefined ourselves as Homo Videns: breathers, consumers, dependants, and creators of images. Truth, in our society, now hinges on the visual; it is mediated by images. Thus it is from the necessity for ocular proof that Cinéma Vérité, Direct Cinema, documentary filmmaking and the mockumentary or mock-documentary genre stem. It is within this tradition that the Italian production Cannibal Holocaust inserts itself, as a hybrid trans-genre film. To better understand this film, I will not only look at it as a traditional horror film, but also as a contemporary mockumentary satire that presents itself as "reality" and highlights the spectator’s eye/I’s primal appetite. In the manner of Peter Watkins' film Culloden, Deodato's film is intended to confuse the audience's

  • Spaghetti Cinema University of Bedfordshire, 9-10 May 2014
Spaghetti Cinema University of Bedfordshire, 9-10 May 2014 What is Spaghetti Cinema and Why Does it Work? Devised by Dr. Austin Fisher and first held in 2013, Spaghetti Cinema is an academic conference and film festival that celebrates the history and contemporary reach of Italian genre cinema. The first event focused on Spaghetti Westerns and the next was a two-day event dedicated to the giallo and Italian horror cinema. Both these events took place in association with the University of Bedfordshire. The balance of academic rigour and cinematic appreciation is a key element of the Spaghetti Cinema approach. The 2014 event featured screenings of Dario Argento’s Phenomena (1985), Lucio Fulci’s ...E tu vivrai nel terrore! L'aldilà/The Beyond (1981) and Ruggero Deodato’s Ultimo mondo cannibale/Last Cannibal World (1977). These screenings were set in context by the appearance of figures involved in varying degrees in the production of the films including Deodato himself alongside his Last Cannibal World actress Me Me Lai. The event also welcomed Luigi Cozzi who worked on the special effects for Phenomena and star of The Beyond, Catriona MacColl. Spaghetti Cinema represents an evolution in both academic conference and film festival terms. Fujiwara claims that festivals have seen a ‘calcification of taste’ (2013: 218), while Cousins argues that ‘so many of them present retrospectives of, or tributes to, filmmakers, genres, or themes that are already well established, part of the canon’ (2013a: 169). Cousins also states that ‘[they should] look at the past of film culture in the broadest geographical terms’ (2013a: 169).

  • Il Profumo Della Signora in Nero and the Giallo Film
Scope: An Online Journal of Film and Television Studies Issue 22 February 2012 Cannibals and Other Impossible Bodies: Il Profumo Della Signora In Nero and the Giallo film Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia For cult film audiences and academics alike, the Italian giallo film is considered predominantly an auteurist domain, where films by the subgenre‟s big names—Mario and Lamberto Bava, Lucio Fulci, Aldo Lado, Sergio Martino, Umberto Lenzi, Luciano Ercoli, and of course Dario Argento—have generally garnered the most attention. Translating literally to “yellow,” the word giallo refers to the yellow covers of the pulp crime novels released by publisher Mondadori during the 1920s, locating the origins of the giallo in the work of authors such as Edgar Wallace. As one of the first giallo films, Mario Bava‟s The Girl Who Knew Too Much (La ragazza che sapev troppo, 1962) contains many of the giallo film‟s signature elements: sex, crime, and most famously a psychotic killer in black leather gloves. But as Mikel J. Koven notes in his book La Dolce Morte: Vernacular Cinema and the Italian Giallo Film (2006), these generic traits are far from uniform, and a privileging of the most well- known giallo auteurs risks missing the subgenre‟s thematic foundations. Inherent to Koven‟s analysis of giallo is its status as a fundamentally Italian cultural phenomenon. However, the reality of their production contexts speaks of a category that expanded far beyond national borders. While the giallo film is commonly discussed in terms of its fundamental “Italianness,” it is worthy of note that 68 of the 134 films listed in Adrian Luther Smith‟s book Blood and Black Lace: The Definitive Guide to Italian Sex and Horror Movies (1999) are international co-productions.

  • Vermeer and Lucio Fulci's SETTE NOTE
Refractory » Subversive Frames: Vermeer And Lucio Fulci’s SETTE ... http://refractory.unimelb.edu.au/2010/07/18/subversive-frames-vermeer... a Journal of Entertainment Media (ISSN:1447-4905) Home » Latest Volume About Editorial Board Submissions State of Play Contact Subversive Frames: Vermeer And Lucio Fulci’s SETTE NOTE IN NERO – Alexandra Heller-Nicholas Published Jul 18th 2010 When paintings appear in the films of celebrated auteurs such as Peter Greenaway or Rainer Werner Fassbinder, critical debate tends to ask how, rather than if, the inclusion of these works impacts the broader meaning of the film as a whole. But despite the prevalence of painting in horror—from the clichéd moving-eyes-behind-the -portrait as typified in Hammer Horror’s Theatre of Death (Samuel Gallu, 1967), to Bernard Rose’s graffiti-laden Candyman (1992)—the same questions are not so readily addressed. Perhaps this is due to orthodox considerations of the horror film as a supposedly lowbrow cultural form, rendering art historical analysis a relatively impotent critical pursuit. Alternatively, maybe the hyperactive theatricality of this emphatically visceral body genre invites more well-trod approaches to critically privileged aspects: the repressed that keeps returning, the final girls and the phallic weaponry have all had more than a brief moment in the analytical spotlight. But the appearance of paintings in horror films—particularly recognisable and famous works—encourages readings outside of more popular critical approaches such as psychoanalysis. This article investigates the utility of Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer’s painting The Love Letter (1669-70) in cult Italian director Lucio Fulci’s giallo Sette note in nero (The Psychic, 1977), uncovering a complex relationship that is pivotal to the film thematically and stylistically.

Modern Italy, 2018 Vol. 23, No. 4, 429–444, doi:10.1017/mit.2018.32 Razza cagna: mondo movies, the white heterosexual male gaze, and the 1960s–1970s imaginary of the nation Gaia Giuliani* Centre of Social Studies, University of Coimbra, Portugal (Received 16 March 2018; final version accepted 23 July 2018) This article investigates the role, reception, and socio-cultural, political relevance of mondo movies in the context of late 1950s–early 1980s film and documentary. The mondo genre debuted with reportage films about sexuality in Europe and reached its pinnacle with Gualtiero Jacopetti’s assemblage films. The historical context in which this genre evolved, and white masculinity was rearticulated and positioned at the centre of the national imagined community, is mapped focusing both on gender and race constructions and on the gaze identifying, encoding and decoding the sensationalist presentation of postcolonial/ decolonising Otherness. A brief review of some of the author’s published work on 1962–1971 mondo movies introduces Cannibal Holocaust (1979) and director Ruggero Deodato’s controversial reflection on the white, capitalist, sexist, Western and neo-colonial anthropological gaze. Keywords: mondo movie; white male gaze; Italian imagined community; racism; postcoloniality Introduction This article aims to investigate the role, reception, and socio-cultural and political relevance of mondo movies in the context of Italian film and documentary from the late 1950s to the early 1980s. The mondo genre debuted with reportage films about sexuality in Europe and reached its pinnacle with the assemblage films of Gualtiero Jacopetti, Franco Prosperi and Dino Cavara.
