"The old Vitagraph lot, then ABC, now Disney in East Hollywood, once had a large backlot, but by the time of television, the backlot was gone. For an early live western tv show, the side of one of the sound stages was painted to look like a western town or desert scene or something, and the show was show live from in front of that painted building." - Jerry S. "I've been told that all the scenes [in 42nd STREET] inside the theater were shot at Prospect on [what was known as] the Vitaphone theater stage. That stage later became Studio E at ABC, (now Stage 5). Eventually, the auditorium end of the stage was demolished to make way for a new studio now called Stage 4. The Vitaphone stage was sort of like the Phantom stage at Universal in that a portion of it had a permanent auditorium set with seats and boxes. It was removed once ABC took over. The old TV series SPACE PATROL was shot on those combined stages." - Richard P.

  • Cliff Harrington
“I have shaken the hand of Moses, Michelangelo and Ben Hur.” Cliff Harrington Cliff interviewing Charlton Heston, Imperial Hotel, 1976 Cliff Harrington (1932 — 2013), traveler, writer, English teacher, friend Interviewed by Allan Murphy, Tokyo 26 March, 1998 Text copyright Allan Murphy, 2017 http://www.finelinepress.co.nz "1 Preface I met Clifford (Cliff) Harrington when we both worked for an English language school in Tokyo. The English Language Education Council (ELEC) had its own seven-storey building, next to Senshu University, for over 40 years before moving to smaller premises in Jimbocho. We worked together for at least 10 years. The school's foreign teachers basically fell into one of two camps. There were the older teachers with 20 or more years of time here and to whom Japan was home. And there were the younger teachers with a maximum of five years or so here. Most were in Japan for the travel experience or what Australians refer to as "the gap year" — a break after graduating from university and before taking a full-time job at home. Needless to say, Cliff was in the former group, and I was in the latter. Of all the old hands, to me anyway, it seemed that only Cliff could truly relate to the younger staff. Typically on a Friday night after work, Cliff and half a dozen other teachers would go to a nearby pub. Along with the beer, soon travel stories would be pouring out. Everyone had some interesting experiences to share. But, whenever it became Cliff's turn, he'd easily trump all of us and then hold the floor.

  • Letters from the Homefront Your Task
WWII: US Homefront Letters from the Homefront Even if you weren’t fighting in World War II, you were still expected to contribute to the war effort at home. Some of these contributions included rationing what you ate/bought, growing your own produce, purchasing war bonds to help the government pay for the war, or even joining the workforce. The nation mobilized itself entirely to fight a war on two fronts in a way that, today, we have never experienced. The culture, entertainment, and lives of Americans at home during WWII was completely centered around and dedicated to the success of the war. Winning the war abroad started with winning the war at home. Your Task: Imagine that you are writing from the US homefront to a loved one fighting in the war. They’ve been gone for some time, and you’ve heard in the news that things might be getting rough for the troops. You’ve decided a good way to lift their spirits would be to send them a letter updating them about what’s been happening at home! This packet contains several primary and secondary sources from the US homefront during WWII. Using at least four of the sources, compose a letter to your loved one giving them an update of how things are on the homefront. Letters should be at least one full page long single-spaced. If you do not finish in class, you will need to turn it in tomorrow in class. Source A: 2 Source B: Victory Gardens As part of the war effort, the government rationed foods like sugar, butter, milk, cheese, eggs, coffee, meat and canned goods.
