l martes 3 de noviembre, 2009, el Representante Estatal William Lantigua hizo Ehistoria cuando se convirtió en el primer inmigrante latino americano en ser elegido a la posición de Alcalde de Lawrence y el primero en el Estado de Massachusetts. En una acalorada contienda, el Representante Lantigua derrotó a David Abdoo por más de 1,000 votos. Hasta la noche de elecciones, al ayuntamiento nunca habían venido tantas personas las cuales llenaron los tres pisos, al punto de alarmar al recién electo alcalde, que por razones de seguridad limitó las entrevistas. Lantigua nació en Villa Consuelo, un barrio de Santo Domingo, República Dominicana, un 19 de febrero de 1955. Mientras trabajaba para Snider/Modicom en North Andover, su presencia se hizo familiar en las reuniones del consejo de la ciudad, donde se presentaba con un letreo con su número telefónico instando a aquellas personas que tuvieran problemas, a llamarlo. “Desde entonces yo no he dejado de ayudar a la gente cada vez que he podido”, dijo. Lantigua fue elegido para representar el distrito 16 por primera vez en el año 2003. Desde entonces, cada dos años ha mantenido una batalla por la reelección con su antiguo oponente y hoy aliado, Ingeniero Marcos Devers. El pasado domingo, Rumbo tuvo la oportunidad de sentarse a charlar con el nuevo electo Alcalde de Lawrence y oír algunos de los planes que tiene en mente. Lantigua dijo que desde que él abrió su ofi cina junto al Ayuntamiento, se encontró ayudando a personas que después de visitar el Ayuntamiento no estaban satisfechas con las respuestas a sus peguntas y/o de la forma en que habían sido tratados. “Esa fue la principal razón por la que decidí postularme para alcalde”, dijo Lantigua. Lantigua tiene un mensaje para algunos empleados del ayuntamiento: “Para aquellas personas (empleados del ayuntamiento) que abusan de sus posiciones, quiero decirles que vamos a cambiar la fi losofía del ayuntamiento. Afortunadamente, el día transcurrió Osin grandes confl ictos y las discordias estuvieron limitadas a pequeños incidentes. Pensamos que Rafael Tejeda hizo un buen trabajo estando disponible cada vez que lo necesitaron, resolviendo posibles problemas antes de que se desarrollaran. William Lantigua fue elegido para operar esta problemática ciudad por los próximos cuatro años y todos debemos ayudarlo a guiarnos a salir de este enredo en el que estamos. El prometió que tratará de ser “el mejor alcalde” no solamente el primer latino electo alcalde y con nuestra ayuda, puede que lo logre y entonces todos seremos ganadores también. No debemos alegrarnos del hecho de que sea un alcalde latino porque la experiencia de tener un jefe de policía y superintendente escolar latinos ha sido muy negativa. Los abusos policíacos que algunas personas han tenido que soportar trajo como resultado que el Departamento de Justicia ha tuvo que intervenir. La historia de las fechorías de Laboy las estamos viviendo a diario en la prensa. Frank Moran quien fue re-electo en las pasadas elecciones del 3 de noviembre en Lawrence. Lo mismo es para los miembros del concilio. Ellos tienen mucho que aprender Moran recibió la mayor cantidad de votos entre los candidatos por toda la ciudad. William Lantigua was elected to run this problematic city for the next four years and we all must help him guide us out of the mess we are in now. He promised that he will try to be “the best mayor” not just the fi rst Latino elected mayor and with our help, he just might do it and we all will be winners, too. We should not rejoice at his being a Latino mayor because the experience from having a Latino police chief and school superintendent has been very negative. The abuse some people endured at the hands of the police resulted in the intervention by the Department of Justice. The story of Laboy’s transgressions is something we are still living through on a daily basis on the local press. The same goes for the members of the City Council. There is a learning curve they must go through since we have so many new ones but they are well-intended individuals and hopefully, they will be ready for the myriad of headaches they have inherited. The School Committee has taken a new turn with the election of Frank Bonet and Mark Gray but the surprises may not have ended here. If Greg Morris is indicted as a result of the on-going investigation on the school department copy machine, James Stokes may end up taking his place. Next, this city has to get serious behind the effort to establish a voter ID system. This will restore credibility to a city that has little respectability left in the entire state.
