College Narayangaon, Junnar, Pune, Maharashtra, India Abstract Medicinal plants are the key source for drugs in the Indian medicine system and also in other ancient systems in the world.Nutritional value of medicinal plants has been intensively evaluated for many decades.Gymnema sylvestre, awell- known antidiabetic important medicinal plant, whose therapeutic value has been studied in different systems of traditional medication. The plant used for the management of different disease and ailments of human beings. Along with this G. sylvestre have antidiabetic, antiinflammatory, anticancer, and antioxidant properties. Present review gives information about recent studies done on G.sylvestre& highlights its phytochemical and biological potential. Key words: Gymnema sylvestre, Phytochemical, Pharmacological profile 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1Information of Plant Gymnema sylvestre Wild R.Br belongs to family Apocynaceae (Subfamily: Asclepiadaceae), an herbal medicinal plant used in traditional medicine to treat diabetes.In ancient times, Gymnema was known as ‘Gurmar’, which means sugar killer. This plant is used by Indian healers for nearly 2000 years as part of the Ayurvedic traditional system. Forcenturies, Gymnema plant extracts have been used as treatment for diabetes,aas it can lead to serious complications ranging from stroke to blindness. The plant has wide utilityin treatment of both types of diabetes, type I and II. Literature search shows that it not only lowers the level of blood sugar but may help repair damaged cells in pancreas, the gland in which insulin is produced thereby improving production. In addition, Gymnema is reputed to reduce the urge to eat sweets thus it helps to avoid eating sweets. Many individuals have experienced that drinking a cup of tea with a few drops of gymnema extract will make sweet things bitter for at least two hours. Therefore, this herb is useful in controlling diabetes in the existing and prospective patients.It is a valuable medicinal plant used in folk medicine to treat diabetes, obesity, asthma etc. in India for antiquity. Itis also used in the treatment of asthma, eye complaints, inflammations, family planning and snakebite. It also acts as feeding deterrents tocaterpillar, Prodenia eridania. It alsoprevents dental caries caused by Streptococcus mutans and in skin cosmetics [1].The plant is used as therapeutic agents for treatment of several pathogenic caused diseases. 1.2 Botanical description of the plant:The medicinal plant is avaliable throughout India, in dry forests upto 600 m, common throughout the district from January to November. Distributed in Asia, Trophical Africa, Malaysia and Srilanka [1]. G. sylvestre is a large &woody climber. Leaves of this plant are opposite, usually elliptic or ovate (1.25– 2.0 inch × 0.5–1.25 inch). Flowers are small, yellow, in umbellate cymes. Follicles are terete, lanceolate, upto 3 inches in length. Fig.1: 2.0PHYTOCONSTITUENTS OF G. SYLVESTRE Gymnema sylvestre is one ofmedicinal plant used in traditional Indian medicine system and studies on this plant were started as early as 1930. It is well known antidiabetic plantcontains several secondary phytochemicals belonging to category alkaloids, terpenoids, tannin, saponin, flavonoid, phenols, anthraquinones, carbohydrates, and glycosides[2].Due to the large range of biological activities, considerable work has been done to isolate and identify chemical constituents of these leaves.Gymnema leaf contains 4 to 10 % of a group of more than 20 saponins glycosides of the olenane-type including gymnemic acids I-XVIII and gymnemasaponins I-V, Some of the gymnemic acids are acylated (Contains an acyl group), while the gymnemasaponins are non acylated. Acylation affects pharmaceutical activity. Dammarane-type saponins and a polypeptide consisting of 35 amino acid residue called gurmarin and other olenane-type saponins (gymnemasins) have also been isolated. 757 Shobha Rupanar, Shirish Pingale International Journal of Engineering Technology Science and Research IJETSR www.ijetsr.com ISSN 2394 – 3386 Volume 5, Issue 3 March 2018 Leaves of G. sylvestre contain triterpene saponins belonging to oleanane and dammarene classes. Oleanane saponins are gymnemic acids and gymnemasaponins, while dammarene saponins are Gymnemoside[5].The group of antidiabetic molecules has been identified as a gymnemicacids after it was successfully isolated and purified fromthe leaves of G. sylvestre [6]. Along with this other plant constituents are flavones, anthraquinones, hentriacontane, pentatriacontane, α and β-chlorophylls, phytin, resins, dquercitol, tartaric acid, formic acid, butyric acid, lupeol, β- amyrin related glycosides and stigmasterol.Leaves of this species produce acidic glycosides,anthraquinones and their derivatives [7]. The essential oil obtained fromleaves of G.sylvestre plant shows antioxidant and antimicrobial activity [8]. All six activities were successfully implemented over the period March 2019 – March 2020, as detailed in the following report: 1. Outline in detail the activities implemented during the Project. Activity 1: Collection trip to northern Namibia – Herbarium voucher specimens of the targeted plants and leaf samples for molecular analysis will be collected from various sites in northern Namibia. Abstract Diabetes has been recognized by western medicine since the early 1800 s as being one of the most prevalent and controllable conditions affecting a large portion ofthe population. Gymnema Sylvestre, an Ayurvedic herb, came to be known as "destroyer of sugar" because, in ancient times, Ayurvedic physicians observed that chewing a few leaves of Gymnema sylvestre suppressed the taste of sugar. It is used today all over India for controlling blood sugar. Several bioactives has been isolated from that herb for diabetes cure. The present review elaborate the bioactives and some facts and mechanism which make this herb an effective remedy for the same. Introduction Gymnema Sylvestre is a woody, climbing plant of tropical forests of central and southern India and in parts of Africa. Distribution is worldwide and it is recognized in the traditional medicinal literature of many countries including Australia, Japan, and Vietnam. Gymnema has been referred to in some texts as Asclepias geminata, Gymnema melicida, and Periploca sylvestris. Gymnema has played an important role in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. Its use has been confined primarily to the management of diabetes mellitus and similar hypo/hyperglycemic conditions. Despite the part used being the leaf, another common name of this species is miracle fruit,[1][2][3] which is shared by two other species: Synsepalum dulcificum and Thaumatococcus daniellii [1]. The main class of chemical constituents isolated from G. sylvestre is Gymnemic acids (a group of triterpenoid saponins) which are responsible for its anti-diabetic action. This herb is being widely used in the treatment of diabetes. Recent studies have shown that this plant is also has antiobesity, hypolipidaemic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory potentials. This review pretends to contribute to the knowledge of the pharmacology, phytochemistry and pharmacognostical aspects of the plant.     Gymnema sylvestre Other names: Gymnema monatum, Periploca sylvestris, Gemnema, Gimnema (plus nog verskillende skryfwyses van hierdie naam), Marsdenia Sylvestris/sylvestre Melicida Gur-Mar, Gurmar, Gurmarbooti Madhunashini Merasingi Sharduvica Vishani en Miracle Plant In Indië, waar hierdie plant algemeen gebruik word in Ayurveda medisyne, dui die plantnaam op die vernietiging van suiker, en dis dan ook wat die plant so besonders maak. Dit lyk nie besonders nie, ‘n mens sien dit eintlik net per toeval raak. Dit rank tot 3 meter hoog in bome of bosse op, lyk donkergroen, het gladde ovaalvormige blare wat na vorentoe na ‘n punt uitloop en klein trossies geel tot roomkleurige bloeisels, van ver skaars sigbaar. ‘n Mens kan amper sê, dit kruip in ‘n ander plant weg. Ek het dit net raakgesien, omdat dit in ‘n droë boom groei, waar nie ander groen kleur teenwoordig is nie. Kenmerkend is ook die lateks-(melk-)vloei as dit beskadig word. Daar is egter inligtingsbronne wat beweer, dat die plantsap helder is. Buitendien beweer sommige bronne, dat die plant baie giftig is, ander sê, dit is by die meeste mense wat Gymnema plantdele vars of in verwerkte vorm opneem, skadeloos. Daar is dus nog nie genoeg navorsing gedoen nie, ten spyte daarvan, dat die plant in Indië algemeen al honderde jare medisinaal gebruik word. In Indië is die plant se naam ‘vernietig suiker’. Mediese gebruike: Dit bevat ‘n bestanddeel, wat in staat is, om die smaakselle wat soet smaak proe tydelik te blok. Dit maak dan nie sin om soet goed in te neem, want jy kan dit nie proe nie.

It is a miracle plant having great anti-diabetic potential. Apart from this it has various traditional uses like in the treatment of urinary complaints, stomach problems, piles, chronic cough, breathing troubles, asthma, eye complaints, cardiopathy, constipation, jaundice, and bronchitis. An inspection of literature revealed some extraordinary pharmacological activities of this plant such as anti-obesity, anti- inflammatory, anti-microbial, hypolipidemic and anti-arthritic activity. Gymnema leaves have many bioactive compounds like Gymnemic acid which is responsible for its tremandous activity specialy its blood glucose lowering capacity. The present review is an effort to emphasize the various traditional use as well as pharmacological uses on G. sylvestre.
