Sugar Industry is of enormous significance for India’s development because of the vital linkages and synergies it promotes between the two pillars of our economy, industry and agriculture. This industry is also one of the main drives of the country’s rural economy which supports millions of farmers and their families directly or indirectly and generates employment for a sizable population in the rural industry. In the prevailing environment, options and opportunities galore for sugar industry to tap. Sugarcane is now emerging as a multiproduct crop providing raw material for the production of food, fuel, energy and fiber, besides a host of ancillary products which can open new avenues for the industry to tap in the years to come. I believe that the convention will prove to be good platform for factory owners, technology developers and sugarcane agriculture experts to interact, deliberate and ponder over matters concerning sustainable growth of the sugar and allied industries in the years to come. My best wishes for the success of the Convention. (Narendra Singh Tomar) Office : ‘G’ Wing, Ground Floor, Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi-110 001 Tel.: 011-23782373, 23782327 Fax: 011-23385876 Resi.: 3 Krishna Menon Marg, New Delhi-110001 Ph.: 011-23794697 / 98, Fax: 011-23794696 (XXXII) MESSAGE I am glad to note that the The Sugar Technologists’ Association of India (STAI) is holding its 78th Virtual Annual Convention at New Delhi from 20-21 October, 2020. In the current challenging scenario of COVID 19 pandemic, the Industry has emerged as a saviour agro based industry which has been providing constant avenues for wealth-generation and employment to millions in rural India. Sugarcane has tremendous significance not only as a source of sugar and sweeteners, but also as a source of sustainable energy and other value added products. With an increasing demand for sugar and other sweeteners, coupled with emphasis on sugarcane/sugar crops based energy programs, there is immense scope for improvement in the production, management, marketing and related areas for these crops, necessitating a manifold improvement in their productivity. Innovative green technologies which can aid in productive, profitable and sustainable growth are the need of the hour. The agro-industrial processes, development of high-value products through bio- energy approach, green chemistry, production of bio-ethanol/bio-electricity etc. need to be optimized. This diversification is bound to pave the way for the sustainable sugar industry. I am also pleased to know that STAI is also going to release a Souvenir on this occasion. I convey my felicitations to all the members of the Association for taking such initiatives and wish the Convention all the success and send my best wishes. Yours faithfully, (Ashutosh Sharma) Technology Bhavan, New Mehrauli Road, New Delhi - 110016 Tel: 0091 11 26511439 / 26510068 Fax: 00 91 11 26863847 e-mail: [email protected] website: www.dst.gov.in (XXXIII) MESSAGE I am delighted to know that The Sugar Technologist Association of India is organizing its 78th Annual convention on 20-21 October 2020 on virtual platform. Under the current situation of pandemic, it is a welcome step as under adverse circumstances it would provide opportunity to various stakeholders to discuss and deliberate on various issues including implications of Covid -19 on sugar consumption and supply chain management. The Indian sugar industry is now world leader but continuous surplus sugar production has resulted in imbalances in demand supply situation of sugar and hence economic sustainability. Valorization of byproducts, particularly, production of bio ethanol by sacrificing sugar through various modes has provided certain relief. However, a long term strategy is required for economic and environmental sustainability of the sugar industry. There is a dire need for developing innovative processes and products so as to bring about a face change and convert the sugar industry into a vibrant and profitable industry. The advancements through technological interventions are required from farm to factory. The convention is an opportunity for discussion of all such issues including farm mechanization, safe processing and packaging, production of special sugars and integration with food processing industry. I wish the convention a grand success. (Narendra Mohan) (XXXIV) Bakshi Ram Director Dated : September 24, 2020 MESSAGE Sugarcane is the second most important commercial crop in the country, grown in about five million hectare area and sustains the sugar industry which is the second largest agro-industry. At present, the crop engages about 123.4 lakh farmers and farm workers. The average sugarcane productivity and sugar recovery have, however, hovered around 59.6-71.7 t/ha and 10.03-10.55 per cent, respectively in the country during 2001-02 to 2013-14, whereas cane productivity and sugar recovery in sub-tropical part of India were lower than the national average and varied from 52.3-60.3 t/ha and 8.98-9.21 per cent, respectively during the same period.
