(XXXI) MESSAGE

I am happy to know that The Sugar Technologists’ Association of India is organizing its 78th Virtual Annual Convention & International Sugar Expo 2020 from 20-21 October, 2020.

Sugar Industry is of enormous significance for India’s development because of the vital linkages and synergies it promotes between the two pillars of our economy, industry and agriculture. This industry is also one of the main drives of the country’s rural economy which supports millions of farmers and their families directly or indirectly and generates employment for a sizable population in the rural industry.

In the prevailing environment, options and opportunities galore for sugar industry to tap. Sugarcane is now emerging as a multiproduct crop providing raw material for the production of food, fuel, energy and fiber, besides a host of ancillary products which can open new avenues for the industry to tap in the years to come.

I believe that the convention will prove to be good platform for factory owners, technology developers and sugarcane agriculture experts to interact, deliberate and ponder over matters concerning sustainable growth of the sugar and allied industries in the years to come.

My best wishes for the success of the Convention.

(XXXII) MESSAGE

I am glad to note that the The Sugar Technologists’ Association of India (STAI) is holding its 78th Virtual Annual Convention at New Delhi from 20-21 October, 2020. In the current challenging scenario of COVID 19 pandemic, the Industry has emerged as a saviour agro based industry which has been providing constant avenues for wealth-generation and employment to millions in rural India. Sugarcane has tremendous significance not only as a source of sugar and sweeteners, but also as a source of sustainable energy and other value added products. With an increasing demand for sugar and other sweeteners, coupled with emphasis on sugarcane/sugar crops based energy programs, there is immense scope for improvement in the production, management, marketing and related areas for these crops, necessitating a manifold improvement in their productivity. Innovative green technologies which can aid in productive, profitable and sustainable growth are the need of the hour. The agro-industrial processes, development of high-value products through bio- energy approach, green chemistry, production of bio-ethanol/bio-electricity etc. need to be optimized. This diversification is bound to pave the way for the sustainable sugar industry. I am also pleased to know that STAI is also going to release a Souvenir on this occasion. I convey my felicitations to all the members of the Association for taking such initiatives and wish the Convention all the success and send my best wishes. Yours faithfully,

(XXXIII) MESSAGE

I am delighted to know that The Sugar Technologist Association of India is organizing its 78th Annual convention on 20-21 October 2020 on virtual platform. Under the current situation of pandemic, it is a welcome step as under adverse circumstances it would provide opportunity to various stakeholders to discuss and deliberate on various issues including implications of Covid -19 on sugar consumption and supply chain management.

The Indian sugar industry is now world leader but continuous surplus sugar production has resulted in imbalances in demand supply situation of sugar and hence economic sustainability. Valorization of byproducts, particularly, production of bio ethanol by sacrificing sugar through various modes has provided certain relief. However, a long term strategy is required for economic and environmental sustainability of the sugar industry. There is a dire need for developing innovative processes and products so as to bring about a face change and convert the sugar industry into a vibrant and profitable industry. The advancements through technological interventions are required from farm to factory.

The convention is an opportunity for discussion of all such issues including farm mechanization, safe processing and packaging, production of special sugars and integration with food processing industry.

I wish the convention a grand success.

MESSAGE

Sugarcane is the second most important commercial crop in the country, grown in about five million hectare area and sustains the sugar industry which is the second largest agro-industry. At present, the crop engages about 123.4 lakh farmers and farm workers. The average sugarcane productivity and sugar recovery have, however, hovered around 59.6-71.7 t/ha and 10.03-10.55 per cent, respectively in the country during 2001-02 to 2013-14, whereas cane productivity and sugar recovery in sub-tropical part of India were lower than the national average and varied from 52.3-60.3 t/ha and 8.98-9.21 per cent, respectively during the same period. The release of the sugarcane variety Co 0238 (Karan 4) developed by ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Regional Centre, Karnal for commercial cultivation in North West Zone has brought substantial cane productivity (19.6 t/ha) and the sugar recovery (2.08 units) improvement and has revolutionized sugarcane cultivation in the sub-tropical part of the country. The variety was in cultivation over 25.88 lakh hectares area (2019-20) in sub-tropical states of Punjab, , , Uttarakhand and , which is the highest ever area (79.15 per cent) occupied by a single variety in the country in a very short span of five years. The share of Co 0238 in the total sugarcane area in the country is 53.18 per cent. Apart from five sub-tropical states, the variety has occupied a sizable area in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha. The spread of Co 0238 in sub-tropical states not only compensated the reduction in cane yield and sugar recovery in tropical states, but also led to overall improvement at national level.

The Sugar Technologists’ Association of India (STAI) – 78th Virtual Annual Convention & International Sugar Expo 2020 is being organized from 20-21 October 2020. The STAI, also recognized by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, has been playing a key role in bringing the Indian Sugar Industry on top of the world map as the largest sugar producer through developing and propagating numerous process technologies and equipment for sugar industry since 1925. In the current scenario of COVID 19 pandemic, this year for the first time, the Convention will be organised in virtual mode. This will give opportunities to overseas scientists/technocrats to participate and share their new research and technologies. I am hopeful that the proposed 78th STAI Annual Convention & International Sugar Expo 2020 will be beneficial to Researchers and Technocrats from different countries and states of India. I congratulate the organizers and wish the STAI Convention a grand success.

Sugarcane being world’s number one crop in terms of harvested tonnage is cultivated on about 26 million hectares of land in more than 115 countries and provides 80% of the global sugar and 40% of ethanol as the primary sugar and bio fuel feedstock crop. India has emerged as the largest sugar producing country of the world with increased production and productivity of sugarcane. There are 525 working sugar mills in the country, producing around 27 MT of sugar, annually. More than 7.0 million farmers are engaged in sugarcane cultivation. It provides employment to about 2 million skilled, semi-skilled & other workers employed in ancillary activities, mostly from rural areas and thus, it has strong influence on the rural economy. The total present turnover of the industry is over Rs. 1,10,000 crore. As the most important cash crop of the country, sugarcane has tremendous potential to contribute in big way to enhance or double the income of the farmers.

I am delighted to learn that the Sugar Technologists’ Association of India (STAI) is organizing its flagship event, 78” Virtual Annual Convention & International Sugar Expo 2020 during October 20-21, 2020.
