Cotton and Ada Yardeni eds., Aramaic, Hebrew and Greek Documentary Texts from Nahal Hever and Other Sites with an Appendix Containing Alleged Qumran Texts (The Seiyâl Collection II), Discoveries in the Judaean Desert XXVH, Oxford: Clarendon Press 1997. xxiii + 381 pp. + 33 figures + 61 plates. ISBN 0-19-82695-3. The sumptuous and attractive volume under review contains the full publication of several dozen papyri from the Judaean Desert. These are all documentary texts, as the term is used by papyrologists in contradistinction to literary texts. That is to say, they were written to be read by a limited number of potential readers, not for publication. In this volume, specifically, we have mainly legal documents — marriage docu ments, loans, sales, and the like — as well as a few lists and one or two letters. The explicitly dated Aramaic documents all fall in the narrow range of 131-134/5 CE; those datable by palaeography could range up to two centuries earlier. -

Bulletin of the Anglo-Israel Archaeological Society 2007 Volume 25 Reassessing the Judean Desert Caves: Libraries, Archives, Genizas and Hiding Places STEPHEN PFANN In December 1952, five years after the discovery of Qumran cave 1, Roland de Vaux connected its manuscript remains to the nearby site of Khirbet Qumran when he found one of the unique cylindrical jars, typical of cave 1Q, embedded in the floor of the site. The power of this suggestion was such that, from that point on, as each successive Judean Desert cave containing first-century scrolls was discovered, they, too, were assumed to have originated from the site of Qumran. Even the scrolls discovered at Masada were thought to have arrived there by the hands of Essene refugees. Other researchers have since proposed that certain teachings within the scrolls of Qumran’s caves provide evidence for a sect that does not match that of the Essenes described by first-century writers such as Josephus, Philo and Pliny. These researchers prefer to call this group ‘the Qumran Community’, ‘the Covenanters’, ‘the Yahad ’ or simply ‘sectarians’. The problem is that no single title sufficiently covers the doctrines presented in the scrolls, primarily since there is a clear diversity in doctrine among these scrolls.1 In this article, I would like to present a challenge to this monolithic approach to the understanding of the caves and their scroll collections. This reassessment will be based on a close examination of the material culture of the caves (including ceramics and fabrics) and the palaeographic dating of the scroll collections in individual caves. -

The issue of "Yonatan" Alexander II coinage [email protected] Zlotnik Yehoshua 10/10/10 Abstract A small number of coins in the series depicting a double cornucopia on the obverse and a legend "Ywnatan1 ( Jonathan) the High Priest and the Council of the Jews", within a wreath bear the name Yonatan-Ywntn instead the common Yehonatan and Yntn2. These coins are attributed according to most scholars to Alexander Jannaeus. The author claims that another possibility exists, namely these coins were minted by another Hasmonean-Maccabean ruler also called Yonatan-Ywntn that ruled after the death of Alexander Jannaeus and before the time of Mattathias Antigonus. In his book Meshorer (Meshorer 2001) attributes the coin to Alexander Jannaeus and doesn’t point to a specific reason to the name Yonatan-Ywnatan on the coin (S 32). Kaufman describes a number of coin types that bear the legend Ywnatan in his books (Kaufman 1995, 2004) marked HA-68,64,74,134,175,185,191,1993. Even though the paleography seems similar, the author claims that despite the similarities in the name Yonatan to the attributed names for Alexander Jannaeus: Yehonatan and Yntn, this may be a Hasmonean ruler who bore the Hebrew name Yonatan-Ywntan and minted several coins right after Jannaeus' death. The referred period is a transitional one and if a die cutter who worked in Jannaeus' mint in Jerusalem, worked on an average of 20-25 years, he may have designed letters in a similar way to his work during the time following Jannaeus' death for another ruler that served as a High Priest and so the paleography on the coins is similar and exists in a series of coin types inscribed with the title "High Priest". -

Preface What is the Copper Scroll? Do the Dead Sea Scrolls contain lost books of the Bible? Did John the Baptist study with the people of Qumran? What is the Temple Scroll? What about DNA research and the scrolls? We have responded to scores of such questions on many occasions—while teaching graduate seminars and Hebrew courses at Brigham Young University, presenting papers at professional symposia, and speaking to various lay audiences. These settings are always positive experiences for us, particularly because they reveal that the general membership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a deep interest in the scrolls and other writings from the ancient world. The nonbiblical Dead Sea Scrolls are of great import because they shed much light on the cultural, religious, and political position of some of the Jews who lived shortly before and during the time of Jesus Christ. -

Mountain Repositories Convenient to the village of Manchester, Ontario county, New York, stands a hill of considerable size, and the most elevated of any in the neighborhood. On the west side of this hill, not far from the top, under a stone of considerable size, lay the plates, deposited in a stone box. This stone was thick and rounding in the middle on the upper side, and thinner towards the edges, so that the middle part of it was visible above the ground, but the edge all around was covered with earth. (JS—H 1:51) The Nephites consistently hid their sacred records in hills. Ammaron hid the records in the hill Shim (see Mormon 1:2–3; compare 4 Nephi 1:48–49), whence Mormon retrieved them (see Mormon 4:23). Mormon subsequently hid all but his abridgment of the records in the hill Cumorah and passed the abridgment on to his son Moroni (see Mormon 6:6). Moroni then hid the abridgment in the New York hill that came to be known as Cumorah.1 Chapter 6, “Hiding Sacred Relics,” noted some stories in which sacred writings and other relics were hidden in mountains. Kenaz, for example, is said to have placed books and stones engraved with the names of the twelve tribes on a mountain beside an altar, as God commanded him (see Pseudo-Philo 26:1–15; Chronicles of Jerahmeel 57:11–21). Jeremiah is said to have hidden the sacred implements of the temple in a cave on mount Nebo (see 2 Maccabees 2:1–8), though according to other stories he hid them in a cave on the Mount of Olives (see Chronicles of Jerahmeel 77:4–9) or, in Samaritan tradition, on Mount Gerizim. -

A Day in the Life of Hananiah Nothos: A Story By Magen Broshi When Hananiah Nothos1 woke up it was still dark outside. He and his companions who shared the cave with him2 did not have to change--they wore the same clothes day and night. After washing their hands,3 they hurried to the morning prayer.4 On the plateau, near the community center,5 stood a group of some hundred and twenty, most of them cave dwellers and a few old and infirm residents of the center. They stood facing east, toward the rising sun, dressed in tattered sandals and ragged clothes, white garb that had known better times.6 1 Hananiah Nothos. A scroll published recently has preserved the names of some members of the Qumran community. This is the only one of the six hundred non-biblical scrolls, which contains such data. Here, the overseer wrote down the names of those he rebuked and the misdemeanors they committed. One of the rebuked was Hananiah Nothos. Cf. Cotton The Impact of the Documentary Papyri from the Judaean Desert on the Study of Jewish History from 70 to 135 CE We are now in possession of inventories of almost the entire corpus of documents discovered in the Judaean Desert1. Obviously the same cannot be said about the state of publication of the documents. We still lack a great many documents. I pro- pose to give here a short review of those finds which are relevant to the study of Jewish history between 70 and 135 CE. The survey will include the state of publi- cation of texts from each find2. After that an attempt will be made to draw some interim, and necessarily tentative, conclusions about the contribution that this fairly recent addition to the body of our evidence can make to the study of differ- ent aspects of Jewish history between 70 and 135 CE. This material can be divided into several groups: 1) The first documents came from the caves of Wadi Murabba'at in 1952. They were published without much delay in 19613. THE TEXTS Th e archives Th e Babatha archive In the early sixties of the twentieth century, an expedition, organized by the Israel Exploration Society and led by Yigael Yadin, explored a cave north of a wadi called Nahal Hever, situated on the western shore of the Dead Sea. In this three-chambered cave, skeletons and artefacts, and letters sent by Bar Kokhba, the leader of the famous Jewish revolt of the second century CE, were discovered. Th e second year of the expedi- tion brought to light another extraordinary fi nd. I quote from Yadin’s report: In one of the water skins a large collection of balls of fl ax thread and a well packed parcel were found. Th e outer wrapping of the parcel consisted of a sack carefully fastened with a twisted rope; inside there was a leather case with many papyri packed tightly together. When the parcel was opened, it was found to contain the archive of Babatha the daughter of Simeon.1 An archive is a set of documents, belonging to one family and oft en, for convenience’s sake, named aft er one person, who either features in the majority of the documents or to whom most other persons men- tioned are somehow related. In the modern period, many and diverse explanations of Herod‘s actions have been put forward, but previous approaches have often been hamstrung by inadequate and disproportionate use of either form of evidence. My analysis incorporates both forms while still keeping important criticisms of both in mind. Both forms of evidence, archaeological and historical, have biases, and it is important to consider their nuances and limitations as well as the information they offer. In the first chapter, I describe the most important previous approaches to the person of Herod and evaluate both the theoretical paradigms as well as the methodologies which governed them.
