I. CORRESPONDENCE

Series of thirty-two autograph letters signed to the metallurgist and novelist Eric N. Simons, comprising 30 pages and 14 correspondence cards, 13 signed with initials, 1916-1943 where dated; with five letters to the same written on Wells's behalf, one by his second wife Catherine (n.d.), 14 original envelopes, and the typescripts of two articles by Simons, ''Little ' and "General H.G.W."

Simons first wrote to Wells about 1915 concerning his war game, a letter which, in Simons' s words, became 'the beginning of a sporadic correspondence that ended in personal acquaintance and a long friendship."

As well as discussing, frequently praising, and occasionally criticising Simons's novels, at one time hastening to point out 'a howler that will bring all the snobs down on you', Wells mentions some of his own works, particularly 'The Outline ofHistory' (1920) for which he wanted Simons's collaboration in view of his technical knowledge of the steel industry. He mentions ',' a dramatisation of 'The Wonderful Visit' and a scheme for the 'Conquest of Peru' (1927 and 1929, perhaps incorporated in another work). In 1916 Wells describes a visit to the Italian front and gives his tips for the date of Germany's surrender and the ending of the war. In 1927 he describes his wife's illness and his efforts to comfort and cheer her last days.
