Brooklyn, NY/Aug 7, 2013—From Friday, August 30 through Thursday, September 5, BAMcinématek presents a week-long run of Robert Clouse’s Enter the Dragon, screening in a new DCP restoration for its 40th anniversary. In conjunction with the release of Wong Kar-wai’s Ip Man biopic The Grandmaster, this series revels in the lightning-fast moves of the revered kung fu tradition known as wing chun, featuring a five-film sidebar of martial arts rarities. Passed on through generations of martial artists, wing chun was popularized by icons like Sammo Hung and Ip’s movie-star disciple Bruce Lee—and has become an action movie mainstay. The first Chinese martial arts movie to be produced by a major Hollywood studio, Clouse’s Enter the Dragon features Bruce Lee in his final role before his untimely death (just six days before the film’s theatrical release). Shaolin master Mr. Lee (Lee) is recruited to infiltrate the island of sinister crime lord Mr. Han by going undercover as a competitor in a kung fu tournament. -

Congratulations to Wudang San Feng Pai!
LIFE / HEALTH & FITNESS / FITNESS & EXERCISE Congratulations to Wudang San Feng Pai! February 11, 2013 8:35 PM MST View all 5 photos Master Zhou Xuan Yun (left) presented Dr. Ming Poon (right) Wudang San Feng Pai related material for a permanent display at the Library of Congress. Zhou Xuan Yun On Feb. 1, 2013, the Library of Congress of the United States hosted an event to receive Wudang San Feng Pai. This event included a speech by Taoist (Daoist) priest and Wudang San Feng Pai Master Zhou Xuan Yun and the presentation of important Wudang historical documents and artifacts for a permanent display at the Library. Wudang Wellness Re-established in recent decades, Wudang San Feng Pai is an organization in China, which researches, preserves, teaches and promotes Wudang Kung Fu, which was said originally created by the 13th century Taoist Monk Zhang San Feng. Some believe that Zhang San Feng created Tai Chi (Taiji) Chuan (boxing) by observing the fight between a crane and a snake. Zhang was a hermit and lived in the Wudang Mountains to develop his profound philosophy on Taoism (Daoism), internal martial arts and internal alchemy. The Wudang Mountains are the mecca of Taoism and its temples are protected as one of 730 registered World Heritage sites of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Wudang Kung Fu encompasses a wide range of bare-hand forms of Tai Chi, Xingyi and Bagua as well as weapon forms for health and self-defense purposes. Traditionally, it was taught to Taoist priests only. It was prohibited to practice during the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966- 1976). -
Global News Reading
本週國際新聞焦點: 糾正過錯 Global News Reading: Righting wrongs A new version of “Kung Fu” redresses past mistakes The Chinese-American hero of the original series, which first aired in 1972, was played by a white actor Apr 22nd 2021 A man walks wearily through a desert in the American West, remembering his combat training at a Shaolin monastery. He enters a saloon bar, orders a glass of water and waits for the confrontation he knows is coming. It happens quickly: another patron sidles up to the stranger and taunts him with racial slurs before reaching for weapons. The bigot is quickly dealt a flying kick to the stomach, and the stranger goes on sipping his drink. 1 “Kung Fu”, which had its premiere in October 1972, was the first show about martial arts on primetime American television. It was created by Ed Spielman, a comedy writer with a passion for Asian culture. As a teenager he had watched “Seven Samurai” (七武士 1954), Akira Kurosawa’s (黑澤明) drama, and gone on to study Mandarin, kung fu and karate as an adult. He discussed the idea of writing a biopic of Miyamoto Musashi (宮本武藏), a legendary Japanese swordsman, with Howard Friedlander, his friend and collaborator. Mr Friedlander suggested a Shaolin monk might make a more interesting protagonist, particularly if transposed to the Wild West. Mr Spielman and Mr Friedlander pitched their film, entitled “The Way of the Tiger, The Sign of the Dragon”, to Warner Brothers. The studio liked the idea but, fearing it was risky, passed it to the television department. They greenlit the story of Kwai Chang Caine, a half-Chinese, half-American martial-arts expert who goes in search of his family, but the two writers parted ways with “Kung Fu” after the pilot episode. -

Bamcinématek Presents Stephen Chow: the King of Comedy, Oct 6—12
BAMcinématek presents Stephen Chow: The King of Comedy, Oct 6—12 “The reigning king of Hong Kong comedy.”—J. Hoberman Co-presented with the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York. The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor for BAM Rose Cinemas and BAMcinématek. Brooklyn, NY/Sep 8, 2014—From Monday, October 6 through Sunday, October 12, BAMcinématek presents Stephen Chow: The King of Comedy, an eight-film retrospective of the Hong Kong actor, writer, and director. Chow’s audaciously anarchic comedies combine surreal sight gags, non sequiturs, extensive pop culture quoting, and gravity-defying martial arts to sublimely silly effect. Endlessly inventive, the reigning king of Hong Kong mo lei tau (―nonsense comedy‖) yields unfiltered cinematic pleasure. Initially prominent as a children’s television star, Chow became synonymous with mo lei tau, a style of film comedy in which traditional melodramas and kung fu tales are peppered with rapid- fire, fourth-wall-breaking slapstick bits and corny puns. A bigger box-office draw in his homeland than Jackie Chan or Jet Li, Chow—who cites Spielberg and Kubrick, along with Jim Carrey, as influences—has used his clout in recent years to fashion himself as an auteur, scripting, editing, and directing a series of high-budget, homage-filled blockbusters. Typical of Chow’s earliest hits, Johnnie To’s Justice, My Foot! (1992—Oct 8) casts the actor as a fast-talking lawyer whose mouth gets him into trouble, and whose kung fu-fighting wife gets him out of it—one of many tough, smart heroines Chow uses as foils for his feckless alter egos. -

The Practice of Pencak Silat in West Java
The Politics of Inner Power: The Practice of Pencak Silat in West Java By Ian Douglas Wilson Ph.D. Thesis School of Asian Studies Murdoch University Western Australia 2002 Declaration This is my own account of the research and contains as its main content, work which has not been submitted for a degree at any university Signed, Ian Douglas Wilson Abstract Pencak silat is a form of martial arts indigenous to the Malay derived ethnic groups that populate mainland and island Southeast Asia. Far from being merely a form of self- defense, pencak silat is a pedagogic method that seeks to embody particular cultural and social ideals within the body of the practitioner. The history, culture and practice of pencak in West Java is the subject of this study. As a form of traditional education, a performance art, a component of ritual and community celebrations, a practical form of self-defense, a path to spiritual enlightenment, and more recently as a national and international sport, pencak silat is in many respects unique. It is both an integrative and diverse cultural practice that articulates a holistic perspective on the world centering upon the importance of the body as a psychosomatic whole. Changing socio-cultural conditions in Indonesia have produced new forms of pencak silat. Increasing government intervention in pencak silat throughout the New Order period has led to the development of nationalized versions that seek to inculcate state-approved values within the body of the practitioner. Pencak silat groups have also been mobilized for the purpose of pursuing political aims. Some practitioners have responded by looking inwards, outlining a path to self-realization framed by the powers, flows and desires found within the body itself. -
