Media Management in 2 Theory and Practice Bozena I. Mierzejewska n the field of mass communication, the term theory is often loosely Idefined. Paradigms, conceptual frameworks, models, normative theories, and, of course, actual theories are all frequently referred to as “theory,” although they represent very different constructs. As traditionally defined in science, a theory is a systematically related set of statements about the causes or relationships underlying observable phenomena (Rudner, 1966). Theories are developed by abstracting from observation and are confirmed through repeated experiments designed to test hypotheses related to a theory. The result is often the development of law-like generalizations about underlying causes and relationships. The purpose of a theory is to increase scientific understanding through a systemized structure capable of both explaining and predicting phenomena (Hunt, 1991). Accepted theories become a part of our understanding and are the basis for further explorations of less understood areas. Being a statement of cause and effect, they help us predict with a certain degree of confidence future conse- quences of our current actions. Sound theories also help describe what is hap- pening and why; hence they are valuable tools for data interpretation. For all of their usefulness, theories do have limitations: First, they are focused and very specific, and therefore they cannot give full explanations of all factors involved. This very characteristic usually results in deterministic explanations. Second, they tend to be based on narrow, unrealistic assumptions. Theories aim to develop models used for predictions of future behavior and conse- quences, but they need to deal with complications of the unpredictability of individual humans and social groups. -

Nigerian Media, Indigenous Languages and Sustainable Development Harrison and Rachael Lagos State University, Nigeria 1. Introduction The idea of a global village, the aspiration of man at this jet age, is aided not only by the Internet, but also more seriously by other types of media. Thus, man, through the media, can get what language form, fashion, music etc are in vogue. In little or no time through our listening to the radio set or watching the television set, we could get to do what others are doing. The media, therefore, become a fast means through which we could get anything promoted. The objective of this paper is to examine the role of the media in the development or otherwise of Nigerian languages. We trace such contributions to the developmental stage the country, at present, finds herself. Development in this study covers a number of concepts, which range from education, social, cultural, to indigenous linguistic maturity. For the study therefore, we examine the radio and television programmes of two media houses each from inception to date. We see how these organisations have consciously or otherwise promoted or chocked the language and consequently culture, through their programmes. We link such positions to the people’s mental and social developments. The study is anchored on Gerhard Leitner’s The Sociolinguistics of Communication Media. Geshard Leitner based his work on address media in the context of the communication dominion. He reveals what performance is, what parameters are that determine its norms. He equally looks at the functions the media aims to fulfill in the society. -

Covenant Journal of Communication (CJOC) Vol. 5 No. 2, Dec. 2018 An Open Access Journal, Available Online Local Versus Foreign: How Audience Preference and Media Coverage Shape Soccer in Nigeria Mumini Alao Department of Mass Communication University of Lagos Lagos, Nigeria. mail: [email protected] Abstract: This study juxtaposes foreign and domestic soccer narratives in the media to determine the level of influence each exerts on Nigerian fans. Respondents from four stadiums in Nigeria responded to questionnaire items while soccer administrators and sports media practitioners answered in-depth interview questions on this juxtaposition and the criterion of influence. Findings show the dominance of foreign content; jointly influenced by both the media and audience. Foreign soccer stories with a mean score of 4.63 featured prominently on the cover pages of sports newspapers compared to 3.29 for local stories while most fans (88.9%; n=1878) preferred foreign content. Results also show that commercial considerations influenced the agenda setting credential of sports media practitioners. Recommendations on how domestic soccer could attract more followership in Nigeria were made.
