"A Few Boyds of Horry" by Lou Floy Milligan, 1999 (High School Teacher in Loris, 1960-1972)

As of this time, I have not found any direct link in my blood line or DNA to the Boyds, but it could be just around the corner. To me the Boyd name is special.

My mother's uncle Elmore (Ellie) Porter of Loris, SC married Mary Jane Boyd and later they went by train to Taylor's Creek, GA. to join his brother Pink Porter in the timber and turpentine business. These brothers had many enterprises in Taylor's Creek, but Pink left no known legitimate heirs, and many relatives were interested in 'Uncle Pink's wealth.'

November 10th, 1999, I was able to travel from Jacksonville, Florida, down 301 to Claxton, Ga. and spent the night with Ellie and Mary Jane's granddaughter, Erline Strickland and her son Peter. Erline carried me to the site of the Taylor's Creek Cemetery where Elmore and Mary Jane are buried, where the town was, and on to Hinesville where they moved when the government moved them after buying the land for Ft. Stewart. Erline said Mary Jane Boyd Porter's brother Lewis Boyd, had moved to Statesboro, Ga ... a busting town on 301 not far from Claxton, and had been a mule trader there.

About five years previously, they had traveled to Tabor City, NC. and Clyde Boyd and I showed them where Ellie and Mary Jane had grown up, and old sites around Simpson Creek in Horry County, including the church, the school, the cemetery and some old timbers from the Boyd Mill which had been on a 30 acre lake.

***

My mother's first cousin, Bertie Wright, son of Calvin and Emma Cox Wright, married Issabelle Boyd "Izzie", born 1889. Their son Mack Davis (M.D.)Jr. died, but I got to know and love Joan who married Winston Harrelson, and Earl Dean who married Alphie Norris. While teaching at Loris High School I taught many of the Porter/Carter/Boyd/Hardee/Todd, etc. families from the Simpson Creek area including Joan's three lovely daughters Deborah, Wanda and Pam. I also taught many of Earl Dean's children. She had a large family. Deborah married Bryan Dale Spivey, and lives near me. Wanda married Billy Suggs, and Pam is single, selling Mary Kay Cosmetics. Joan had a stroke and is now at the Loris Nursing Home, still with a keen mind and lovely light in her eyes. I see Earl Dean at funerals and saw recently that she favors Mary Dell Boyd Graham.

***

My dad's first cousin, Delta Spivey, daughter of Archie Spivey, who ran a general store on the old Whiteville-Conwayboro Road at the Daisy Cross Roads, married B.F. Boyd. B.F. and Delta, as was their son DeFay, were at Page 22 Winter2000 The Independent Republic Quarterly Primitive Baptist Churches most Sundays. B.F. was an humble, righteous man who died a few years ago. DeFay died recently, then Delta was buried November 1, 1999. Delta's daughter, Carolyn (Dennis) looks and talks a lot like her mother. Carolyn had traveled a lot, and her husband and sons had a large grocery store in Chadbourn, NC.

***

My mother's cousin, Jess Carter, married Velma Boyd. Jess farmed and ran a sawmill on the old Carter lands and went to the Primitive Baptist Church. I did not know their son Bryan, who lived away, but I knew Cynthia and taught Wendell and Jessie. I also taught Jessie's husband, Rocky Harrelson, who was a pilot with the NATO forces. Cynthia is, for the moment, at her parents house and teaches at Green Sea/Floyds High School.

***

I recently met and talked with Mary Dell Boyd Graham. I recognized her daughter, Sarah Graham Wilson, as one of my former students. Sarah has a sister, Vicky. Mary Dell and Estelle (Mrs. Fulton Wright) had been married to brothers.

***

Clyde Wofford Boyd died November 15, 1999. Mr. Clyde married Virgie McDowell, sister to Vernice who married his brother Robert G. Boyd, and sister to Eunice Stevens of Tabor City. Mr. Clyde was one of my favorite people. He was a man devoted to his family, wife, and Primitive Baptist Church. He had a great reputation as an honest and talented builder. Richard Wright and Jenny got him to do some special remodeling on the old Dr. Cox house. Clyde was gracious and interesting as he showed us the old sites of his boyhood, including the timbers from the old mill site, and beautiful pecan trees at the home site. I taught his fine children: Rev. Wofford Boyd of Greenboro, NC, who has a daughter, also Clyde's daughter , Norma, the wife of Loris postmaster Larry McDowell, mom of twins Kevin and Kipp.

***

Mr. Herman Boyd, a dedicated Primitive Baptist, is in ill health and in a nursing home. He lived in a nice brick house east of Loris on Highway 9, beside Boy's Builders' Supply Business which he ran for years. I taught his son Jimmy and his daughter Olivia.

***

I taught Johnny Boyd, son of Reece and Lorane Hickman Boyd. Johnny and his wife have several businesses around Loris and their daughter is operating the beauty shop in Tabor City. I feel guilty to this day because in Page 23 Winter 2000 The Independent Republic Qua~~rly my geometry class, Johnny took the challenge to do a tri-secting problem that had never been done before in history. I could not find anything wrong with his solution, but I felt that since it had never been solved that I was the one with the problem. Not long after that, one student in the US got world recognition for finally solving this problem. I felt sick! Johnny might have been the first...if only I had more courage.

***

I also taught Robert Boyd, Jr., Ted and Craig, among many other find Boyd students. Robert worked with the tobacco business and I taught his wife, Linda.

* **

Recently I was thrilled to meet some Porter cousiri.s from Atlanta, GA. who are also kin to the Boyds. Shelby Jean Gause Freeman Workman, her husband Charlie and her mother, Evelyn Porter Gause, were at the home of Vera Porter Reaves Graham at Myrtle Beach. Shelby Jean, a nurse and mother of five, is interested in finding out more about her Gause, Boyd and Porter ancestors. Her grandmother was Sarah Elizabeth Boyd who married Wesley Cole Darty Gause. Someone told her that there was a Robert Boyd buried in a cemetery behind Ethel Gilmore's house. She was thrilled to find a picture of her ancestor, John Porter, at the home of Hosea and Mable Cook.

***

In November 1999, I received a call from Jan Neal of Opelika, Alabama She had been searching and communicating with my genealogy buddy W.S. Hardee on the internet. She was interested in the Loris Boyds. It seems her dad, Ernest Boyd, was born in Florida, the son of Daniel C. Boyd, alias Jesse James Boyd, who had left Loris for Florida when he was only fourteen years old. He married in 1905, and was the son of Robert T. Boyd, Sr. and his first wife, Sarah Gore. Jan thinks Robert T's second marriage was to Sarah Margaret Stanley and they had the Boyds, including Benjamin Franklyn, Sr., in the Simpson Creek area. I have not researched the Boyds, but my Primitive Baptist relatives keep marrying into that family. Shelby Jean d/ o Evelyn Porter Gause, d/ o William Edward Porter, sf o John Porter, s/ o William D. Porter, s/ o Allen Porter b. 1798. ***

A SHORT IDSTORY OF THE MONTGOMERY JACKSON BULLOCK HOME NOW KNOWN AS THE DR. W.K. ROGERS OFFICE COMPLEX

By Eldred E. Prince

Annie Lee Bailey (Mrs. Douglas B. Bailey, now deceased) remembers that she was in the third grade when M.J. Bullock came to Loris in 1920 as superintendent of the Loris School. The third grade was on the second floor of a two-story frame building located on East Main Street where M.J. Cox's service station now stands. This building faced Walnut Street and was the only school building in Loris. The old timers living in the community who knew Mr. Bullock feel that for the next sixteen years, until .his death on December 1, 1936, no school in South Carolina had a more capable or dedicated educator. Former Senator James P. Stevens has written that M.J. Bullock was the greatest educator this county has ever known. "During the depression era when there was no money to operate the bus routes to the Loris schools, this man with nobility of mind and compassion for the students of those days, Utilized his own money to keep the children coming to the Loris schools. He even mortgaged his own home for this purpose." Montgomery Jackson Bullock purchased 3.4 acres from Marion A. Wright, trustee, a Conway attorney, for $875.00 in 1926. This was part of a 32.8 acre tract purchased by Wright from Y.P. McQueen, four acres of which has been deeded to B.H. Hinson and Dan W. Hardwick as trustees of Loris School District eighteen. The Bullock home was built on this site in the late twenties or early thirties. Much of the lumber for the building was sawed from trees grown on his farm and the farm of his brother, Doc Bullock, who lived in the Spring Branch Community of Floyds Township near Fair Bluff, N.C. According to J.H. Yon, his agriculture class set pine trees in front of the Bullock home in 1933. When the building was completed it was said to be the finest home in Loris. In of 1929 Bullock deeded the 3.4. acres acquired from Wright, on which the new home had been built to his wife, Agnes Richardson Bullock. In August 1930, Mrs. Bullock sold .4 acre to Dan W. Hardwick, Dr. Huger Richardson, And Charles D. Prince, as trustees of Loris School Distract Eighteen. When Mr. Bullock died. on December 1, 1936, Mrs. Bullock converted the upstairs into three rental apartments. She made one three room apartment downstairs which she rented to Eldred E. Prince and his new bride, Sarah, in May 1936 for $23.00 per month. Mrs., Bullock and daughter, Dorothy, lived in the remainder of the first floor. Mrs. Agnes Bullock died November 25, 1941 in the Conway Hospital. Her funeral was conducted in Georgetown, and she was buried in the City Cemetery in Winter2000 _. Sumter. Mr. Bullock was buried in the Spring Branch Baptist Church Cemetery and the simple but meaningful epitaph reads "A Teacher." Mrs. Bullock had appointed her brother, C.M. Richardson; and her sister, Margaret Oswald of Georgetown, as executors of her estate. In April 1943, they sold the property to Dr. W.K. Rogers for $5,000.00. Soon after Dr. Rogers bought this property, he converted it into a medical clinic with beds for about fifteen patients. Approximately 350 births occurred in the Roger's Clinic from 1943 until 1950, when the clinic was closed and his patients were transferred to the new Loris Community Hospital, which opened its doors on May 15, 1950. These babies are now 45 to 51 years old, and many of them are returning to . their birthplace to have Dr. Michael Mills, Optometrist, fit bifocals to their eyes. Daphine Rogers remembers that the first patient who died at the clinic was a Mr. Phillips from Green Sea. After Dr. Rogers had examined him, he told the nurses to admit him and put him to bed. They put him in a wheel chair, put the chair on the elevator and pulled the elevator up with a rope. They put the patient to bed and came back in a few minutes to check on him and found him dead. Dr. Joe Kirby, Jr., of Mullins was associated with Dr. Rogers in the clinic for a short while before he developed leukemia and died. In 1949, Dr. William H. Johnson joined Rogers at the clinic and remained there until it closed. Besides Daphine Rogers, others working at the clinic included Lottie P. Hardee, Alice Small, Steve Goldfinch, Irene Stevens Floyd, Edna Small Currie, Lila Watkins, Gertrude Faircloth, Richard DeWitt, Edna Wilson, Margaret Blackburn, and Eunice Mishoe. Before he died in February 1971, Dr. Rogers deeded this property to his second wife, Elizabeth Hardee Rogers. Elizabeth died in February 1976. The executor of her estate, Bankers Trust Company of Columbia, sold this property to Milton Wright and his son, Darrell, in July 1978. Darrell had discovered a method of making a building material product that had the appearance and other characteristics of stone. He opened offices of the Custom Stone Company in the newly acquired building and did a brick business filling mail orders on a national basis for the kits containing the formula and instructions for making this product. After two years, the company office was moved to Birmingham, AL. The building was then sold to Darrell's brother, Terry Wright. Terry rented offices for an insurance agency, a surveyor, and an accountant, as well as using a part of the building for his real estate office. The next time this property changed hands, it was acquired by the present owner, Dr. Michael Mills, in October 1984. Dr. Mills enjoys workjng in this facility. His employees like it, and his clients like it. He says that he does not think that this piece of property will change hands again for a long, long time. Winter 2000 The Independent Republic Quarterly Page 26 Herman L. Boyd by Wynness Thomas from The Loris Centennial Souvenir Book 1887-1987

Few people can look at buildings with X-ray eyes like Herman L. Boyd. The reason that he is able to see not only the outside but the inside of many structures is because he has constructed ·buildings all over Horry County. He knows board by board and brick by brick just how they are built.

A son of Nancy Idella Gore and Benjamin F. Boyd, Herman L. Boyd attended Loris High School and began carpentry work when he was in his 20' s. In 1942, he married Dalma Holt from Horry County and they moved to Folkstone, NC. Boyd was involved in carpentry work on government construction, including Camp Davis, for several years; then they returned home and farmed a year.

In the mid-1940s Boyd began construction work again. He was later joined by his brother, Robert G. Boyd (now deceased), who had returned from service. The two brothers united their efforts in construction work and the establishment of Boyd's Builders Supply. After a period of time the partnership was dissolved. Herman Boyd purchased the Builders Supply while Robert Boyd continued in -the building business. After a few years Herman returned to building while continuing to operate the Building Supply. Later, realizing he could cut down on construction costs, he added his own plaining mill and put in a dry kiln.

During his years of construction. Boyd sometimes employed as many as 50 people. At times, the customer would tell his ideas to Boyd and Boyd drew his own blueprint.

His work has included the offices of five doctors, two churches. and additions to Good Hope, Green Sea, Sweet Home, Pleasant Meadow and others. He constructed the Loris Methodist parsonage, former Senator James P. Stevens' law office building, and many residences at the beaches. Boyd has built homes all over Horry County and in Georgetown County and the first addition to Loris Hospital.

During the years, Boyd doubled the size of his own building to accommodate his growing business. In 1972, he terminated construction work and retained only the building supply. His son, Jimmy, and son-in-law, Tony Ambrose, now are working with him.

Boys says it is almost unimaginable how prices have increased through the years. "Lumber was once $50 a thousand, now is above $200," he said. "In 1972 I had never heard the work 'condo' and there were only two or three story buildings on the strand." But he likes Loris, a quiet little town with plenty of business, and he thinks the future looks good. Winter 2000 The Independent Republic Quarterly Page 21

THE OAKS, LAKELAND DRIVE, CONWAY, SOUTH CAROLINA

By Woodrow ~~ Long

During the winter of 1931, the year I graduated from Conway High School, Nr. Don Burroughs of Burroughs and Collins Co. asked my dad, Wi 11 i am Mack 11 Bi 11 Mack 11 Long, to trans pl ant the oaks down this street. At the time, my older brother, Ben Long, was working f9r Burroughs and Collins as their forester. Ben drove the truck, and my dad and I rode w1th him to Myrtle Beach to what is now Lake Arrowhead Camp Grounds. We dug and pulled up the live oaks and water oaks, filling the back of the truck. These were in addition to all the local young live oaks and water oaks we co u 1 d f i n d from t h.e 1 o ca 1 woods of Burroughs and Co 1 1 i n s • My dad worked full days transplanting the trees, while I helped on my way home from school. My family lived about l! miles from school, and this 11 avenue of oaks 11 was on my route to and from my home to school.

Mr. Edward Burroughs had used hi~ compass to provide proper spacing. Later the road was improved; lots being sold and city limits exten- ded. This probably was the best planned housing development undertaken in the history of the city of Conway. It is one of the beauty spots of our town. Perhaps a marker to this 69 years old 11 avenue of oaks" is applicable • . Dr. Randal Wells of Coastal Carolina made a video with me discus- sing the planting of these trees. This video is a part of the Oral His- tory of Horry County, a copy of which is available in the Horry County Library in Conway. · If there is further interest in this project, he may be contacted. cc Burroughs and Chapin Co.
