Perle Mesta was the first United States Ambassador to MADAM Luxembourg. The original “hostess with the mostest,” Mes- ta was known for hosting lavish parties in Washington D.C for almost 30 years. Born in Oklahoma, her family came into wealth when her father became involved in the oil and real-estate industries. In 1917 she married George Mesta, owner of Mesta Machinery. Mrs. Mesta became interested in politics when her husband introduced her to several high-ranking officials, including President Calvin Coolidge. Following her husband’s death, she became heavily involved in the quest for women’s rights and joined the National Women’s Party as its Congressional chairman and Public Relations specialist. While lobbying for the Equal Rights Amendment, she made a multitude of con- nections with politicians who would later attend her famous social gatherings. A Republican for most of her life, Mesta realigned herself with the Democratic party, opting to give financial support to then Senator Harry Truman.

This beloved musical, set in Austria in 1938, follows novice Maria Rainer who becomes the governess for the von Trapp family, capturing the hearts of the seven children and their father, a widowed naval captain. As the Nazis occupy Austria, the family is forced make decisions which forever change their lives, fleeing their home in pursuit of freedom. Director Milissa Carey, music director William Liberatore, and choreographers Brett and C.J. Blankenship breathe new life into this classic tale of hope, love, and family. The Sound of Music will play July 19- August 5, 2018 (press opening: July 20) at the Smithwick Theatre, I-280 & El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills. For nearly six decades, audiences of all ages have adored The Sound of Music, the final musical composed by legendary songwriting team Oscar Hammerstein II and Richard Rodgers (South Pacific, Oklahoma!, The King and I). The sweet and sweeping score includes favorites such as “My Favorite Things,” “Do Re Mi,” “Edelweiss,” and the title song.

    Ronald Davis Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts

    Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability.

The American musical comedy as modern American opera has been a strong part of this interest. Despite this interest, very little research is yet available. Most of the books on musicals are only basic histories, out- lines of famous shows, or discussions of dramatic style. None offers any analysis of the scores. As for the songs of the era, from or separate from the theater, only one scholarly study of them has been published so far, Alec Wilder's American Popular Song: The Great Innovators, 1900-1950 .

Berkeley Playhouse founding Artistic Director Elizabeth McKoy helms this endearing family classic, featuring a cast of 40, with musical direction by Greg Mason and choreography by Staci Arriaga. THE SOUND OF MUSIC plays October 27 through December 2 (Press opening: October 27) at the Julia Morgan Theatre in Berkeley. When struggling novice nun Maria proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess to the seven troublesome children of widowed naval Captain Von Trapp. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures their hearts, and the heart of the stern Captain. Based on the real-life Austrian family and their narrow escape from the Nazi’s over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II, THE SOUND OF MUSIC provides one of the most thrilling finales ever presented on stage, and includes such memorable songs as “My Favorite Things,” “Do Re Mi,” “Climb Every Mountain,” and the title song, all of which have become a much- loved part of the 20th century musical theater canon.
