Después de ayudar a Robert (Bob) Moog en el desarrollo de su primer sintetizador comercial, o habiendo colaborado con nombres como Leonard Bernstein, Carlos demostró a través del uso y difusión que le dió al sintetizador que podría ser un instrumento apropiado para recortar, reinterpretar, perturbar, reparar o recomponer fuentes de sonido (composiciones musicales, en un primer momento) ajenas. El año 1972 es clave en la vida de Wendy, ya que publica un doble álbum "Sonic Seasonings" que a pesar de no tener el mismo éxito que otros anteriores, sí que fue muy influyente para los artista del género ambient. El que fuera doble álbum le valió para que en cada una de la 4 caras se reflejara una estación del año: la primavera ponía de relieve el canto de unos pájaros, la lluvia y algún que otro trueno; el verano consistía en sonidos de ranas e insectos; el otoño incluye vacas y el sonido del fuego; el invierno, por último, tiene lobos aullando. Se puede oir previews de cada estación aquí. Pero como decimos, 1972 es el mismo año en el que lleva a cabo la banda sonora de "A Clockwork Orange" (La naranja mecánica), de Stanley Kubrick. Cuando estaba componiendo "Timesteps", Carlos estaba leyendo al mismo tiempo "A Clockwork Orange" de Anthony Burguess y sintió que el principio de este libro ya reflejaba el mismo espíritu que la música que ella misma estaba componiendo. Cuando anunciaron la versión cinematográfica, Carlos y su productora Rachel Elkind presentaron una maqueta a Kubrick, que rápidamente se interesó y los invitó a Londres para conocerse. La banda sonora oficial también omitió mucho del trabajo que había realizado. Así que "Wendy Carlos's Clockwork Orange" (es en este año también cuando empieza a firmar con el nombre de Wendy después de su cambio de sexo) incluye las versiones completas de "Timesteps", March from A Clockwork Orange (la famosa versión electrónica de la Novena Sinfonía de Beethoven) o "Title Music from A Clockwork Orange" (basado en "Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary" de Henry Purcell). Tron en Wikipedia Antes de "Tron", en 1980, trabajaría de nuevo con Kubrick en "El Resplandor", donde de nuevo el director desechó gran parte del trabajo de Carlos y utilizó otros tracks ya existentes de otros compositores. A principios de la década del 2000 se remasterizó la mayor parte de su catálogo. En 2005 se publicó el doble volumen Recovering Lost Scores (recuperación de partituras perdidas), que contenía material previamente descatalogado (la banda sonora de El Resplandor), la banda sonora nunca publicada de Woundings, y música grabada para las películas Tron y La naranja mecánica y que nunca fue usada. The simplest, syllabic chants, in which each syllable is set to one note, were probably intended to be sung by the choir or congregation, while the more florid, melismatic examples (which have many notes to each syllable) were probably performed by soloists. Plainchant melodies (which are sometimes referred to as a “drown,” are characterized by the following: A monophonic texture; For ease of singing, relatively conjunct melodic contour (meaning no large intervals between one note and the next) and a restricted range (no notes too high or too low); and Rhythms based strictly on the articulation of the word being sung (meaning no steady dancelike beats). Chant was developed to support the regional liturgies used when celebrating Mass. Each area developed its own chant and rules for celebration. In Spain and Portugal, Mozarabic chant was used, showing the influence of North Afgican music. The Mozarabic liturgy survived through Muslim rule, though this was an isolated strand and was later suppressed in an attempt to enforce conformity on the entire liturgy.

Iliana VELESCU Ovidius University Constanta Faculty of Arts Abstract: Artistic exploration period of the early 20th century draws two new directions in art history called Dadaism and Futurism. Along with the painters and writers who begin to manifest in these artistic directions, is distinguished composers whose works are focused on producing electronic, electric and acoustic sounds. Music gets a strong minimalist and concrete experimental type, evolving in different genres including the ambient music. Keywords: ambient music, minimalism, experimental music Ambient music is a derivative genre of electronic music known as background music developed from traditional musical structures, and generally focuses on timbre sound and creating a specific sound field. The origins of this music are found in the early 20th century, shortly before and after the First World War. This period of exploration and rejection of what was classical and traditionally gave birth of two artistic currents called in art history, Dadaism and Futurism. Along with painters and writers manifested in these artistic directions were distinguished experimental musician such as Francesco Balilla Pratella, Kurt Schwitters and Erwin Schulhoff. This trend has had a notable influence in Erik Satie works which consider this music as „music of furniture” (Musique d'ameublement) and proper to create a suitable background during dinner rather than serving as the focus of attention1. The experimental trend has evolved at the same time with the „music that surrounds us” which start to delimitated the cosmic sounds, nature sounds, and sound objects - composers being attracted by sound exploring in microstructure and macrostructure level through the emergence and improvement of acoustic laboratories or electronic music studios as well as Iannis Xenakis, Pierre Boulez, Karl Stockausen.

Electronic music includes compositions made using electronic, digital or circuitry-based instruments and technologies. Some electronic sounds may be produced using electronics themselves (e.g. tape reply keyboards, synthesizers, samplers, and theremins) or technologies that manipulate acoustic sounds using signal processing (e.g. audio effects like reverb, echo and stereo imaging). Circuit bending is a technique used to manipulate electronics using short-circuiting techniques in order to create new, unusual or non-native electronic sounds. Why does researching women in Electronic Music matter? A 2019 report titled, “Inclusion in the Recording Studio?” by Stacy L. Smith Ph.D at the ​ ​ USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, found that between 2012-2018, women’s representation in the music industry decreased significantly. Using quantitative and qualitative analysis, Smith’s study surveyed the gender and race (or ethnicity) of artists and producers who created 700 of the most popular songs on the Billboard Hot 100 year-end charts between 2012-2018. The report studied gender across this seven year span, tracing Grammy nominations in categories for Record of the Year, Album of the ​ ​ ​ Year, Song of the Year, Producer of the Year, and Best New Artist. The investigation ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ also examined the barriers female songwriters and producers face using qualitative interviews with the creators. Across this seven year span, 21.7% of artists were female, 2017 showing the starkest decrease at 16.8 %.

    John Miller The Original Synth Anyone who has ever produced a film or video knows that sound demands much more post-production work than the image. Often, live recordings of otherwise familiar subjects end up not sounding the way an audience expects. When recording on-site, background noise might interfere as well. Since audiences want sound to be transparent, these things pose problems. Sound technicians can correct them, but the job is labor- intensive. The result of all this work is ideally imperceptible. Not surprisingly, film criticism typically concerns the gaze as an ideological construct, but makes comparatively little mention of sound. Thus, sound assumes the role of second nature. Literally invisible, it can still predispose viewers to see an image the way a director wants. For example, to set the seaside as part of the mise-en-scene, it is effective first to introduce the sound of waves, then cut to a shot of the beach. That way, the image reaffirms what the audience already knows but does not explicitly recognize: that the sea is present. Sound is not so much subversive as it is intractable. Although the light from a projector or video screen diffuses, it nonetheless creates an image into which the audience focuses a perspective, a cone of vision. Perspective orders an image and makes it memorable. One also can speak of sound perspective – that distant sounds are softer than close ones – but the analogy is rough. Sounds emanate from discrete points, but disperse. Elaborate home theater systems can only do a mediocre job of spatializing it, especially because the flat screen remains the reference.
