Between 96 pages of photos, maps, and detailed facts, I’m very pleased to highlight the diversity of the BLM’s multiple use mission. We serve the public lands by accomplishing what is perhaps the most extensive range of duties by any one agency. BLM foresters use scientific methods to plan for a sustainable growth of trees which also provide a healthy environment while still affording Americans homes, offices, and jobs. Our recreation planners and interpretive specialists present inspirational educational events and breathtaking locations for Americans to visit and create long-lasting memories. Resource specialists care for our special areas protected under the National Landscape Conservation System. Scientists at the BLM complete crucial research using the most current data to ensure we maintain these lands for future generations. -

Unlike the western part of the state, there’s not much chance you’ll run into a bear out here, but it is definitely rattlesnake coun- try. It’s an area of sparse human population, and most of the people who live here like it that way. Cowboy is spoken here. A good way to begin your exploration of this fascinating part of the state is by traveling the Oregon Outback National Scenic Byway, breaking away from the Cascades and journeying south and east into the Great Basin via OR 31. Fort Rock Rising up out of surrounding sagebrush desert, Fort Rock is a towering jagged rock formation, technically a tuff ring, set in an ancient seabed. It is also perhaps the most famous anthropological site in Oregon, as a pair of 9,000–year old sagebrush bark sandals were discovered here. Trails lead up into the bowl of this crater-like formation, and you can scramble to the top for views of the surround- ing desert. Fort Rock has been designated a National Natural Landmark, and an Oregon State Parks interpretive display at the base of the rock does a good job of Lone tree in Harney Valley ranch country near Burns relating the natural and human history of the area. The town of Fort Rock has a museum with several pioneer-days buildings that have good potential for ghost town-like photographs. Hours and access are SOUTHEAST OREGON limited so you can’t get the best angles during the golden hours, but it is possible to make some nice images from the parking area at those times. -

Steere Geologist * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * OREGON MINERAL PRODUCTION IN 1960 By Ralph S. Mason* Oregon's mineral industry produced its second highest value of row minerals in 1960. Following a nation-wide economic trend during the year, the industry was off approximately $3 million from lost year's record-breaking high of $49.8 million, according to preliminary estimates mode by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The heavy construction commodities, crushed stone and sand and grovel, reflected construction log and were responsible for most of the change from lost year. Metal mining, aside from nickel, was quiet. The state's only uronium mine and one of the two mercury producers shut down. Industrial mineral products showed both gains and losses as compared to the previous year. Cement production was up 12 percent while clays declined 15 percent and diatomite 3 percent. -

The Harney Area combines three of the four planning units in the Burns Bureau of Land Management District. Most of the land in the Harney Area is located in Harney County, although a few parcels are just outside the county line in Lake and Malheur Counties. Almost all of Harney County is included. There are approximately 3,320,000 acres of Bureau administered public land within the Harney Area, as well as other public and private lands. -

Riding on the leading edge of the moving North American plate, Oregon reflects the underlying mecha- nism of the plate collision boundary in virtually all aspects of its geology. In the seven years since the fourth edition was written, an irregular but continuing drumbeat of earthquakes reminds us of the forces beneath our feet and the need to prepare for catastrophic changes be they quakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, floods, or massive earth movements. Most profound is the discovery of irrefutable evidence that these catastrophes have been visited on the state quite regularly over the past few thousands of years as well as the absolute surety that similar disasters will oc- cur in the near and distant future.
