Introduction Ladies and gentlemen Mr Holle John Cryan I’m sure you’re all just as curious about today as I am. We will, after all, be talking about nothing less than innovation in the financial industry – a subject which, by its very definition, cannot be boring. Innovation basically boils down to the introduction of something new. But is that all there is to it? Edward de Bono,1 thinking about progress in the world of transport, once described a key element of innovation with the following words. "Removing the faults in a stage-coach may produce a perfect stage-coach, but it is unlikely to produce the first motor car." Whenever we talk about innovation, it’s not, then, a question of perfecting habitual modes of thought and action but about harnessing inspiration and thinking laterally. I trust our varied programme today will serve to stimulate the latter. I would like to kick off today’s event by posing three questions that have greatly occupied me recently in my capacity as a banking supervisor. 1. Why have innovations in the financial industry become a hot topic now, of all times? 2. What do we mean, exactly, when we talk about innovation in banking business? 3. Can banks even be innovative? 2. Innovation: why now, of all times? Let’s start with the first question: innovations in the financial industry – why now, of all times? The Notion of Song, Identities, Discourses, and Power: Bridging Songs with Literary Texts to Enhance Students’ Interpretative Skills Elroy Alister Esdaille Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2020 © 2020 Elroy Alister Esdaille All Rights Reserved Abstract Sometimes students struggle to interpret literary texts because some of these texts do not lend themselves to the deduction of the interpretative processes with which they are familiar, but the same is not true when students pull interpretations from songs. Is it possible that students’ familiarity with songs might enable them to connect a song with a book and aid interpretation that way? This study attempted to explore the possibility of bridging songs to literary texts in my Community College English classroom, to ascertain if or how the use of song can support or extend students’ interpretive strategies across different types of texts. I investigated how songs might work as a bridge to other texts, like novels, and, if the students use songs as texts, to what extent do the students develop and hone their interpretative skills? Because of this, how might including songs as texts in English writing or English Literature curriculum contribute to the enhancement of students’ writing? The students’ responses disclosed that the songs appealed to their cognition and memories and helped them to interpret and write about the novels they read. Moreover, the students’ responses revealed that pairing or matching songs with novels strengthened interpretation of the book in a plethora of ways, such as meta-message deduction, applying contexts, applying comparisons, and examining thematic correlations.

The Way of the Cross St Mary’s Garforth Introduction: This booklet provides short Bible readings, reflections and prayer for each of 13 stations on The Way of the Cross. As we accompany Jesus on his journey to Calvary, let us take a moment to remember the context. Jesus carried his cross through the narrow crowded streets of Jerusalem. It was Passover time and so the city was full of people, many of whom mocked, jostled and took pleasure in watching as Jesus struggled with his heavy burden. The way was often steep. The journey that Jesus made on that day remains a poignant symbol of the life of faith for Christians throughout the world, as we struggle with our own crosses - challenges, disappointments and failures. The streets of our towns are filled with people who carry their personal crosses, who are bruised, battered and broken. Through this Way of the Cross, Jesus is inviting us to journey with him and to reflect on his suffering as it continues in the lives of his people. “Boogie Wonderland” WITH
“Boogie Wonderland” WITH SOHEILA SOKHANVARI PRIVATE VIEW 15th of October 2015 6:30 - 9:00PM 16th of October – 14th of November 2015 Occasionally, there are those strange moments in history during which what we see and what we hear are out of synch. Events unfold before our eyes and yet what we know to be true and what is being written in the history books are two different narratives, as opposite as night and day. This experience can create a strange sense of altered reality, a feeling that our senses are out of synch, a weird un-syncopated rhythm that causes us to re-examine historical events over and over, long after their initial catalysts have died down. Such is the case of Iranian-born artist Soheila Sokhanvari’s oeuvre, showcased through new works in the solo show Boogie Wonderland (16 October – 14 November 2015) at Kristin Hjellegjerde. With a joyful colour palette reminiscent of Frida Kahlo or Gauguin, Sokhanvari subscribes to the school of magical realism that enhanced reality in which the banal and everyday take on new life and meaning by being imbued with an elevated focus. It also belies the complex political undertones of her work, allowing her to take a step back and examine events from her native country through the lens of distance and time. She investigates the concept of collective trauma as an experience that can be told through the narratives of individuals, using mainly family photographs as her source material, alongside found imagery from pop culture and news recordings. Her work is also recognizable for its obsessive use of patterning and decoration, inspired by the idea of ‘anaesthetised aesthetics’, an expression used by philosopher Susan Buck- Morss to capture the way in which control over aesthetics can be used to control society.

“September”—Earth Wind & Fire (1978) Added to the National Registry: 2018 Essay by Rickey Vincent (guest post)* “Do you remember, the 21st night of September…?” those were the opening lyrics to one of the biggest hits of 1978, and still one of the most entertaining pop songs over the decades. It is a song about memory, memories that have happened, and memories yet to come. A contagious joy emanates from the song, with lyrics that tease with importance, yet captivate with a repeating “ba-de-ya” refrain that is as memorable as any lyrical phrase. The song is a staple of movie soundtracks (such as “Ted 2,” “Barbershop--The Next Cut,” and “Night at the Museum”), commercial jingles, and family gatherings everywhere. With music providing tickles of percussion, soaring yet comforting horn lines, and the breathtaking harmonies, “September” is one of Earth Wind & Fires’ most catchy sing- along favorites. The lyrics spoke of dancing under the stars, and of celebrating moments in our lives. The words captured ideas that seemed so meaningful, yet really were not. The 21st night of September? What date was that? Was it someone’s birthday? How could a song tug at one’s memories, and yet refer to so little? Co-writer Allee Willis has said the date was used simply because it “sounded right when sung.” The irony was that Earth Wind & Fire had had a run of some of the most thought- provoking and inspiring messages in their catalogue of hit songs, from “Keep Your Head To the Sky” to “Shining Star” and “That’s the Way of the World,” there was an expectation of something deeper underpinning the uplifting experience.
