The old, familiar "bi-polar" world of books and serials has given way to a complicated universe of multimedia resources, including the World Wide Web, compact disks, electronic databases (bibliographic and full-text), videos, graphic and text files, microforms, and so on. Along with the multiplication of media has come an accelerating trend toward the "virtual library," where resources are ac- cessed from thousands of miles away and no longer need be physically present in the library building (along with equally remote library users!). Along with swift technological change has come economic and social turmoil. The old "technology gap" between First and Third Worlds has narrowed to near-invisibility; Latin American societies have taken full advantage of new information technologies to leapfrog the old bottlenecks of time and space that separated the Northern from the Southern Hemispheres. But along with excit- ing technological developments have come doubt and confusion. Library bud- gets, which have long struggled to keep up with old-fashioned monograph and serial inflation, have been assaulted with new demands to accommodate emerg- ing information technologies and formats. The economics of the new informa- tion age are far from certain; in an era of free-market economics, government "downsizing," and shrinking support for public education, the issue of free and equal access to information is very much in question. Most of the essays in this volume are concerned with the new informa- tion environment which is coming into being as we near the next millennium. From the use of the Internet by the have-nots of society to the digitalization of deteriorating research materials, participants in SALALM XLI have struggled to conceptualize and frame answers to the complex questions which new tech- nologies have engendered. The essays in this volume, however, do not capture the full range of activities from the sessions. José Soriano of the Red Científica Peruana described how his organization is bringing Internet access to ordinary people in Peru, who may not even own a telephone. There were panels on CDs and multimedia in Latin America, a demonstration by the Archivo General de Indias in Seville of developments in digitalization of the Archivo' s extraordi- nary resources on colonial Latin America, a panel on ongoing digitalization IX x Preface projects of Caribbean newspapers and Brazilian documents, panels on effective bibliographic instruction in the age of multimedia, the "virtual library" in theory and practice, and many other topics. What they all had in common was one overriding theme: that technology does not exist in a vacuum. It is always rooted in a social context, and its im- pact on our society will always bring unexpected benefits and problems. To close the "user-information gap," or more prosaically, to put a human face on the gad- getry, will increasingly be the challenge for librarians in the dawning age of multimedia. Peter A. Our New York meeting was truly a consortial gathering, with New York University, Columbia University, and The New York Public Library working together to provide facilities for hosting the meeting. I am especially grateful to the Reed Foundation, Puvill Libros, and the Instituto Cervantes for their gen- erous support for panels and receptions. Laura Gutiérrez-Witt, SALALM' Executive Secretary, was a constant source of advice and help on the difficul- ties of planning and executing a large and complex meeting. Personally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people who helped proofread and format the papers, particularly Michael Foldy, Lori Mestre, Daphne Patai, and Stas Radosh, as well as Pat Graves and the students who helped retype especially recalcitrant papers. Of course, no SALALM papers would ever see the light of day without the hard work and patience of Barbara Valk, who has steered publications through many rocky reefs over the years and continues to demand (and get) the highest quality work from the Seminar's contributors. XI I. Media and Politics 1 . The Internet, the Global Commercial Communication Revolution, and the Democratic Prospect Robert W. McChesney The current period is one of intense turmoil across the globe. On the one hand, capitalism reigns triumphant in a manner unknown for most of the century, if ever. This new era of capitalism is characterized by some as neoliberalism, referring to the acceptance of the market and profit maximization as the best regulators of human affairs. It is also characterized as globalization, referring to the manner by which the market economy is evolving from a national to a transnational foundation. There is no small amount of debate about the ex- tent of globalization and its effects, but there is no question that many key firms and markets now operate globally or regionally rather than nationally. On the other hand, formal democracy now extends to a greater percentage of the human race than ever before. The key word, of course, is formal, because many of these democracies are quite corrupt and ineffectual. And even the purported guiding light of capitalist democracy, the United States, is a remark- ably antidemocratic society, as its political process is typified by rampant depoliticization, minimal public awareness or debate, and open rule by powerful moneyed interests. That capitalism and democracy are not synonymous should hardly be a sur- prise. Capitalism, even under the best of circumstances, is always a class society and democracy is most effective when there is limited class inequality. Democ- racy also works best when there exists a democratic spirit, a notion that an individual's welfare is directly and closely attached to the welfare of the commu- nity, however large community may be defined.

Under the command of Alfonso Urquiola, the selection of 28 players observes a brief training period at Pinar del Rio's Capitan San Luis Baseball Stadium, on the eve of its departure to the Puerto Rican city of San Juan on January 31st, venue of the Caribbean Classic from February 2nd to 8th. Composed of 3 catchers, 9 infielders, 7 outfielders and 9 pitchers, the staff will be Cuba's trump card in its 2nd consecutive participation in these Series, again as a guest country. The Cuban team will debut on February 2nd against Mexico, the next day will rival Dominican Republic, then will collide with the host, to close the qualifying phase on the 5th of February, facing Venezuela. The first 4 places will play crossed semifinals on Saturday 7th, and the winners of those matches will star the Grand Final on Sunday the 8th, as the remaining challenges, at the Hiram Bithorn Stadium in the Puerto Rican capital. He concluded that, “What is actu- ally being invaded here is America and its hold on its theoretical na- tional pastime. We’re not sure exactly when this happened—possi- bly while you were busy watching a Yankees-Red Sox game—but this isn’t just America’s sport anymore. It is Latin America’s sport.” While it may not have gone that far yet, the presence of Latino players in baseball, especially in Major League Baseball, has grown enormously. In 1990, the Racial and Gender Report Card recorded that 13 percent of MLB players were Latino. In the 2009 MLB Racial and Gender Report Card, 27 percent of the players were La- tino. The all-time high was 29.4 percent in 2006. Teams from South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean enter the World Baseball Classic with superstar MLB players on their ros- ters. Stark wrote, “The term, ‘baseball game,’ won’t be adequate to describe it. These games will be practically a cultural symposium— where we provide the greatest Latino players of our time a monstrous stage to demonstrate what baseball means to them, versus what baseball now means to us.” American youth have an array of sports to play besides base- ball, including soccer, basketball, football, and hockey.

Three stadiums (Atlanta’s Turner Field, Arizona’s Bank One Ballpark, and Colorado’s Coors Field) are all over 1000 feet above sea level. If the thinner air at higher altitudes really matters, then high elevation ballparks should be relatively easy places in which to hit a home run. The purpose of this brief note is to test whether or not there is a relationship between the number of home runs hit by a home team’s opponents and the ballpark’s elevation above sea level, after accounting for differences in field dimensions. Table 1 gives the approximate elevation of the ballpark (measured in feet above sea level), the three dimensions along the left field foul line, to center field, and down the right field line (in feet), and the total number of home runs hit by visiting teams at each ballpark between 2002 and 2004. [We excluded the Montreal Expos, now the Washington Nationals, who before their move to the nation’s capital played 22 (21) “home” games in 2004 (2003) at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico.] All data are from The Sporting News [1].

Moreover, this impact extends beyond the limited context of sport since, in addition to the obvious economic benefits for many families, it enhances the image of the Spanish-speaking community in the United States. At the level of language, contact allows English to influence Spanish, especially in the area of vocabulary, which Spanish assimilates and adapts according to its own peculiar structures. Baseball, which was invented in the United States during the first half of the nineteenth century, was introduced into Spanish America about thirty or forty years later.

Through my research I have found that both entities follow a very similar timeline with highs and lows coming around the same time in the same province; although, I have not found any direct linkage between the two. My analysis begins around 1837 and continues through present day, and by analyzing the histories of each movement demonstrates clearly that both movements followed a unique and similar timeline.

In Le texte et l'avant-texte: les brouillons d'un poéme de Milosz, Jean Bellemin-Noel points out that the analysis of the genesis of a work entails a careful comparison of its "pre-texts" (rough drafts, fragments of a work published prior to the work itself, etc.) with the work printed in its "final form," in order to observe its process of elaboration.1 Raymonde Debray-Genette indicates that this task should discover systematic variations from pre- text to text (the general laws that govern omissions, additions, alterations, etc.), and not simply describe individual variations, although at times these may be of great interest.
