While the platform still uses KVM as the hypervisor to run the same network OS virtual machine (VM) images, we have completely rewritten the rest of the platform. For example, we replaced the desktop GUI application with a new HTML5 browser-based user interface (UI). The software that orchestrates and runs the simulation is brand new and has a much smaller memory footprint. We greatly simplified the installation and initial simulation creation to improve the user experience. The virtual machines in the network simulations are connected via a custom-designed fabric. These changes provide for a more secure, easier-to-use network simulation platform and enable new core concepts in the product. Starting with CML 2.0, you can think of each of your network topologies as a lab. You create and modify your labs on the CML server. With some limitations, you can modify the topology while the lab simulation is running. For example, you can change the connections between nodes, and you can add new nodes and connect them to the topology without stopping the simulation. Labs are also persistent by default now, unlike in the 1.x versions of the product. That is, when you stop a simulation, the disk images for the VMs in the lab are not discarded. This persistence preserves the state of each node, including crypto keys, license keys, and newly-installed packages. CML 2.0 is built on top of REST-based web service APIs designed with both security and automation in mind. You can use these APIs to create labs and drive the entire simulation lifecycle programmatically. The new release was designed "API first" to ensure that fine-grained operations are exposed via the APIs in a consistent way. The product uses these APIs in its own user-facing interfaces: • the HTML5 UI • companion utilities, such as the Breakout Tool • the Python client library Cisco Modeling Labs 2.0 Release Notes 1 Cisco Modeling Labs 2.0 Summary of CML 2.0 Changes CML enables you to create and run virtual networks. You can use these labs for personal study for certification, for teaching networking classes, and for testing out new protocols or configuration changes. With the changes in the 2.0 release, CML also becomes part of a larger NetDevOps ecosystem, enabling you to test and validate network changes in an automated workflow. CML 2.0 is a complete rewrite of the product and introduces fundamental changes. Finally the thesis wants to investigate if min- imal virtual machines are suitable to host custom application stacks and are able to compete with full-sized virtual machines. As virtualization technology has achieved increased popularity the recent years virtual machines are now used by many busi- nesses, institutions and consumers for different purposes. Full-sized virtual machines are large, and demand considerable amounts of computing resources from the Cloud Resource Pool. This project was able to significantly reduce the size of virtual ma- chines and the amount of computing resources required to host them. The smallest virtual machine accomplished in this project had a size of merely 1.5MB allowing a population of almost 500 times, or at least two orders of magnitude, larger than one standard-sized Ubuntu Server instance. Custom written software was also created for each type of virtual machine for the purpose of simulating real-world CPU usage pat- terns. Several population sizes of minimal virtual machines were deployed and tested in Hypervisor-on-Hardware and Hypervisor-in-Cloud labs to compare their behavior and performance in different environments.

    Comparison of Operating System Complexity Dan•Simon Myrland [email protected] ABSTRACT It is plainly obvious that computer operating systems are growing increasingly complex every year, and have been for some time now. In the early days of UNIX a PDP11 with ¼ Mb of ram and 30 Mb of diskspace served its 100 users well, whereas today a computer with 10,000 times more resources is not even adequate for a single user. The increased complexity does not only tax our hardware but also our minds. Whereas Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson at Bell•Labs wrote the entire UNIX operating system and userland in a matter of weeks in the late 60’s, you would be hard pressed to find a developer today that can finish a company webpage within a year. Naturally you can do a lot more with a computer today then you could in the 70’s, but at what cost? This article does not give a definitive answer to the correct balance between providing the necessary features and keeping things simple, instead it simply analyses the complexity of operating systems, and their various components. Such analysis is illuminating in itself and can provide hints to the above question. Although commented, proprietary systems are not studied in detail here since it would be illegal to do so. Finally, only UNIX•like operating systems are analyzed. In practice very few viable non•UNIX exist, and comparing the handful that do with UNIX•like systems, would be comparing apples and oranges.
