She was 12 years old. Twenty years later her daughter, Brian’s mother, was taken. Thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, like Brian Butler’s, have been coping with the trauma of child removal for more than a century. Beyond Sorry describes the growth of the grassroots movement that exposed the truth about Australia’s shameful removal policies and worked towards justice. Born in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, the movement was joined by nearly a million non-Indigenous Australians in the 1998 Sorry Day Journey of Healing campaigns which paved the way for the Federal Parliament’s unanimous apology in 2008. Brian Butler and John Bond call on the Australian government and community to take further steps to help complete the journey of healing for Stolen Generations people, bring about real reconciliation and prevent the continuing separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families and communities." About the Author: Brian Butler is from central Australia and, since his teens, has devoted himself to reuniting families separated by the removal policies, and healing the harm caused. He was the first Director of South Australia’s Aboriginal Child Care Agency, and for 15 years chaired the Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care. John Bond has worked in 30 countries, written for many publications, and has been a member of the Institute of Journalists UK. He served as Secretary of Initiatives of Change International, which tackles injustice and works for peace and reconciliation in more than 50 countries. Exemption gave her legal freedoms denied to other Indigenous Australians at that time: she could travel freely, open a bank account, and live and work where she wanted. In the eyes of the law she became a non-Aboriginal, but in return she could not associate -with other Aboriginal people – even her own family or community. It ‘stank in my nostrils’ -- Ella Simon 1978. These personal and often painful histories uncovered in archives, family stories and lived experiences reveal new perspectives on exemption. Black, White and Exempt describes the resourcefulness of those who sought exemption to obtain freedom from hardship and oppressive regulation of their lives as Aboriginal Australians. It celebrates their resilience and explores how they negotiated exemption to protect their families and increase opportunities for them. The book also charts exemptees who struggled to advance Aboriginal rights, resist state control and abolish the exemption system. Andrea, Andrew Holt "This rich and engaging book looks at instances of sanctified violence, the holy wars related to religion. It covers it all, from ancient to present day, including examples of warfare among Sikhs, Hindus and Buddhists, as well as Christians, Jews and Muslims. It is a comprehensive and readable overview that provides a lively introduction to the subject of holy war in its broadest sense—as ‘sanctified violence’ in the service of a god or ideology. It is certain to be a useful companion in the classroom, and a boon to anyone fascinated by the dark attraction of religion and violence." It remains a pioneering work of African literature as well as a unique and invaluable historical document about colonialism and Africa’s role in the Great War. Lamine Senghor’s The Rape of a Country (La Violation d’un pays) is another pioneering French work by a Senegalese veteran of World War I, but one that offers a stark contrast to Strength and Goodness. Both are made available for the first time in English in this edition, complete with a glossary of terms and a general historical introduction. The centennial of World War I is an ideal moment to present Strength and Goodness and The Rape of a Country to a wider, English-reading public. Until recently, Africa's role in the war has been neglected by historians and largely forgotten by the general public. Euro-centric versions of the war still predominate in popular culture, Many historians, however, now insist that African participation in the 1914-18 War is a large part of what made that conflict a world war. It begins in 1935 when the author was a fifteen-year-old student in Berlin and ends forty-four years later with the Islamic revolution. Because of his privileged position, Amir Aslan Afshar offers us a candid look behind the scenes of the 1979 Revolution. His experiences and observations refute the standard narrative of why the Shah left Iran and why and how the Iranian monarchy ended. Throughout his memoirs, he tries to draw the characters of the players in this modern fresco—both friends and enemies—most of whom he knew very well. His unwavering loyalty to the Shah, to whom he was a close confidante, does not prevent Afshar from denouncing and condemning the infamous SAVAK’s virulent and corrupt behavior. Amir Aslan Afshar was born in Tehran. He has had a brilliant and illustrious diplomatic and political career. He represented Iran as ambassador to the United States, Germany, and Austria. In 1979 he was appointed as Grandmaster of Protocol of the imperial court. He served in that position until the overthrow of the monarchy in 1979. He was with the Shah during the king’s nineteen-month exile. He presently lives in Nice. It was not only neighbors who fought and preyed on each other, but also close family members, and even fathers and sons.
