In 1773 Gustav III transformed it into an opera band. As the only professional orchestra in nineteenth-century Sweden it also regularly gave concerts with symphonic and vocal works. Its first encounter with Wagner’s music was probably with the Tannhäuser Overture in 1856. During the twentieth century, the orchestra Tristan und Isolde grew from around sixty to almost a hundred members. Today it numbers 114. The Royal Swedish Opera Male Chorus and Orchestra number dwindled during the nineteenth century.     THEATRE 351WI Theatre History II with Dr. Felicia Londre FRENCH 480 Survey of French Theatre with Dr. Gayle Levy Now and Then: French Cultural Influence in Swedish Theatre and the Path of Theatre in Sweden Until Modern Times Once upon a time in eighteenth-century Sweden, French- language theatre was the main type of theatre that you could find. To the unsuspecting drama enthusiast, the idea of French theatre in Sweden is strange. However, the presence of French theatre makes sense because French culture was enormously influential at this time in Scandinavia. In fact, the French theatre troupes overtaking Swedish theatres in the eighteenth century were invited by Louisa- Ulrika, Queen of Sweden and wife of King Adolph-Frederick, in 1753. This invitation sparked an upheaval in Swedish theatre that was finally settled in 1771 by King Gustav III and Sweden soon began producing its own theatre again after an eighteen-year pause (Senelick 65). Sweden would encounter more pauses in theatre development after the departure of French troupes. In examining the process of winning Swedish theatre back for the Swedish language, it will prove useful to understand more about the political and cultural atmosphere in Sweden in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. However, it is also important to note that Sweden has since recovered from the French influence to become a country responsible for producing brilliant theatrical artists. The French culture (specifically French theatre) was extremely popular in Sweden in the eighteenth century and this influence sparked the beginning of the downfall of Swedish-language theatre. As stated in National Theatre in Northern and Eastern Europe, “The taste for French theatre became so general and seductive that people forgot there had ever been a Swedish theatre, and thought it foolish to believe there ever could be.

Bergman's first-ever production of Hamlet will be performed in Swedish in the BAMOpera House. Ingmar Bergman is the renowned Swedish director of the Academy Award winning film Fanny and Alexander. While he is best known for his work in films, he has had a parallel and equally successful career in the theatre. He is the former Artistic Director and producer of the Royal Dramatic Theatre of Sweden in Stockholm and most recently directed August Strindberg's Miss Julie, which was presented at the 1987 Los Angeles Arts Festival ·and is the only other stage work by Bergman to have been seen in America. Other theatrical productions directed by Ingmar Bergman include Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House and The Wild Duck, Strindberg's Dream Play and Shakespeare's King Lear. Other films include Autumn Sonata, Face to Face, Cries and Whispers and Scenes from a Marriage . Bergman's Hamlet is a radically post-modernist treatment of Shakespeare's classic play, with overtly erotic and sensual references. He opens the play with a scene of sexual violation between Kfng Claudius and Queen Gertrude that takes place before the entire court.

  • Bergman Studio; and European Bergman Conversations
    The 2018 Bergman Year at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm: World premiere of The Troubled; Bergman Studio; and European Bergman Conversations Pernilla August will direct The Troubled, based on Linn Ullmann's novel. A new think tank is formed to develop texts for the stage: the Bergman Studio, with amongst others acclaimed director and screeenwright Lisa Langseth. In addition, throughout the year 2018, European stage artists will hold open conversations about the contemporary theatre scene in Europe. These news were revealed at a press conference held today, 18 September 2017, at the Swedish Embassy in London in conjunction with the Ingmar Bergman Foundation. The initial events for 2018, the year Ingmar Bergman would have turned 100, are thus in place at The Royal Dramatic Theatre (Dramaten). They will complement the Ingmar Bergman International Theatre Festival that takes place at Dramaten between 23 August and 2 September. -- The anniversary year 2018 will be an especially important year for the festival. Dramaten will present a number of new productions alongside several international guest performances. A long list of institutions in Swedish cultural life will participate in the celebration: Dramaten, along with the Ingmar Bergman Foundation, Swedish Television (SVT), SF Studios and many others, says Eirik Stubø, Artistic and Managing Director of Dramaten. The entire programme of the festival will be released in April. Pernilla August directs Linn Ullmann's The Troubled The Bergman Year will feature the world premiere of Linn Ullmann's novel The Troubled, adapted for stage by Karin-Maria Bille and directed by Pernilla August. --Encountering Linn Ullmann's fantastic text is like opening a Chinese box.
