Monday, July 20, 1964 Number Sixty Five KIT OF THE WEEK: WHERE DID OUK LOVE GO - Supremes (Motown) #1 at WGIV-Charlotte. #2 at Atlanta. It’s power is demonstrated by the fact that it's ahead of the Beatles, in two markets where Beatles are big. A smash in Tennessee, Arkansas, West Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia. CORRESPONDENTS POPULAR PICK: SELFISH ONE - Jackie Ross (Chess) Widely chosen. Should prove itself with two or three weeks of heavy play. SURPRISE OF THE WEEK: MATCHBOX/SLOWDOWN - Beatles (Cap-LP) Two sides from England's best selling EP, which have been included in their newest LP. Play from tapes and discs at several stations in the South, has produced phenomenal request re-action. They are bigger at KILT, WHOO, WVLD, WFUN, WQAM and WQXI than the songs other than the title number from the UA album. HOT ACTION RECORD: I WANNA LOVE HIM SO BAD - Jelly Beans (RB) Our SMS choice of many weeks ago appears headed for the top ten nationally. Big in all corners of Dixie. SMS CHOICE OF THE WEEK; BABY I NEED YOUR LOVING - Four Tops (Motown) One of the best records I have ever heard. The most exciting new sound of *64. I predict it will be a top five national smash. SMS ALBUM OF THE WEEK: SOMETHING NEW - Beatles (Capitol) Due out today. One of their best. Contains five numbers already available on the UA album. BEST: "Matchbox", "Slowdown", "Anytime At All", "Things We Said Today" (originally cut as an A-side single), and "When I Get Home". GOOD: "Komm Gib Mir Deine Hand." SOUTHERN TOP TWENTY 1. It was hot for about two years. Outside of the Beatles, in a class of their own, the second go round for most of the English acts, over here, is less spectacular. The new Dave Clark Five single is nothing more than the B side of his current hit, over there. "Can’t You See That She’s Mine" got only as high as eleven in Great Britain. "I’ll Keep You Satisfied" was out about a year ago on Liberty by Billy J. Kramer. Never was big over there, though written by Lennon and McCartney. (A brand new item, "From A Window" was released in England, on Friday. Same writers.) "How Do You Do It" was jf=1 over there, over eighteen months ago. Will never match "Don’t Let the Sun" here! "Someone Someone" made #2 two weeks ago, there, but is now jj=h. I’m afraid it will have fate here as "Juliet." Cilia Black had the #1 hit there for many weeks and now is certain never to get near that position in the US. "House of the Rising Sun" by the Animals, due this week here on MGM, was #1 there. If, I said if, they can get some television exposure in this country, they’ll have a winner. The record i.s unique. But, it has been the visual element that has been one of the big factors in establishing the English artists in this country. (And it did the same for Fabian, Frankie Avalon and the others of the Eandstand era). Without this ingredient, an English disc is just anothex- good or bad record. Read the last sentence again! J Now, what’s happening with the English groups? The latest sides by the Searchers, Rolling Stones and Hollies are the clue.....they’re cutting American R & B numbers. And so are the umteen other groups that you’ve never heard of....(Manfred Mann, Zephyrs, Mickey Finn & the Blue Men, etc.). Most of these records, and almost all, will never be big here, though they can easily climb to Number One, there. Our American record market is greatly dependent upon the Negro consumer. He rarely, yes there are exceptions, purchases a rinky-tink teenage sound and will almost never spend a buck for one of his songs, done by an English group, especially when the song was a hit within the past two years and was consumed by all American record buyers. With all of these words, I ’m directing you to be very selective on the sides you program from the English charts. Their half-million sellers are legit, but our market will not gobble everything up automatically.
