In Taiwan, artificial ponds were originally created on farmlands for irrigation purposes and the needs of the domestic water supply. Although pond creation is a typical farming practice, it also provides habitats for pond-breeding amphibians. Thus, it is essential to understand the current status of habitats and their vulnerability regarding urgent conservation needs for target species. Günther’s frog (Hylarana guentheri), a pond-breeding amphibian, has a high sensitivity towards surrounding environmental changes, and can be used as an indicator species to assess habitat suitability. The purpose of this study is to establish a systematic framework to assess the habitat suitability of pond-breeding amphibians by using Günther’s frog as a pilot-study species. First, we collected frog survey data from Chiayi, Taiwan, from winter 2013 to spring 2015, and investigated the present status of the environmental conditions around the ponds. Next, expert questionnaires and the fuzzy Delphi method were applied to establish the hierarchical evaluation criteria regarding the habitat suitability assessment. -

Resilience in Space: An experimental analysis of resilience in urban flood management in the Taipei Basin Hsu Chia Sui Email: [email protected] Thesis Supervisor: Kimberly Nicholas Email: [email protected] A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the Lund University International Master’s Programme in Environmental Studies and Sustainability Science (LUMES), May 2011 Abstract The existing paradigm of flood management in the Taipei Basin prioritizes structural measures over non-structural measures. This strategy is not sufficiently flexible, particularly in light of increasingly frequent extreme weather. Resilience theory is concerned with the capacity of a system to absorb disturbance and retain its same functions. This study offers new insight by conceptualizing resilience in urban flood management. In particular, it demonstrates to what extent resilience theory as used in research on social-ecological systems was useful in developing a better plan for urban flood management. The study comprises a resilience assessment of flood management in Taipei based on guidelines in a workbook for scientists published by the Resilience Alliance. This study identified the external shocks to the flood management system in the Taipei Basin include typhoons, evidence of increasingly frequent extreme weather, groundwater mining and resulting land subsidence, and rapid urbanization. This study also includes a historical profile of major flooding and hydraulic projects from 1960 to 2010 and analyzes phases in terms of an adaptive cycle. The study concludes that resilience theory was an effective approach to investigating external shocks and stress to the system. Furthermore, the qualitative approach to apply resilience was a useful discourse for envisioning a better urban flood management system. -

Specifically, we focus on the public art project of the Mass 14Rapid Transit System in Kaohsiung (hereafter, Kaohsiung MRT), and examine how the discourse of multiculturalism intertwines with the discourse of public art that informs the practice of the latter. Multiculturalism in this case is considered as an ideological embodiment of the politics of difference, wherein our main concern is placed on the ways in which different constituencies in Kaohsiung respond to the political-economic ordering of Kaohsiung in post-Second World War Taiwan and to the challenges Kaohsiung City faces in the recent events engendering global economic change. We see the Kaohsiung MRT public art project as a field of contentions and its public artwork as a ‘device of imagination’ and ‘technique of representation’ (see Ngo and Wang in this volume). -

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) (formerly the Soil Conservation Service) has leadership for the Federal part of the National Cooperative Soil Survey. Major fieldwork for this soil survey was completed in 1988. Soil names and descriptions were approved in 1989. Unless otherwise indicated, statements in this publication refer to conditions in the Survey Area in 1988. This survey was made cooperatively by the Natural Resources Conservation Service, the University of Alaska Fairbanks Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, and the Fairbanks North Star Borough. Their elegant feathers are snow white most of the year, but develop a shaggy, golden-yellow crest and breast patch in the summer breeding season. Their legs, feet and toes are jet-black; faces are black and bare around the FACTS eyes and across the forehead. SOUTH KOREA 22 October – 3 November, 2018 Sandy Darling, Jeni Darling, Tom Thomas Most tours to South Korea occur in May for the spring migration or in late fall or winter for northern birds that winter in South Korea. This trip was timed in late October and early November to try see both summer residents and winter arrivals, and was successful in doing so. Birds were much shyer than in North America and often were visible only briefly, so that, for example, we saw few thrushes although they could be heard. This report has been written by Sandy and includes photos from both Tom (TT) and Sandy (SD). Sandy saw 166 species adequately of which 57 were life birds. When one includes birds heard, seen by the leader or others, or not seen well enough to count (BVD), the total was about 184. From trip reports it was clear that the person to lead the tour was Dr Nial Moores, Director of Birds Korea, an NGO working to improve the environment, especially for birds, in Korea. Nial has twenty years of experience in Korea, knows where birds are, and has ears and eyes that are exceptional. He planned the trip, made all the arrangements, found birds that we would not have found on our own and was our interface with Koreans, few of whom speak English. Nial also had to rejig the itinerary when strong winds led to the cancellation of a ferry to Baekryeong Island. We drove the vehicles - confidence was needed in dealing with city traffic, which was as aggressive as other trip reports said!
