Abstracts for the Presentation Cyclocity® – the worldwide most famous Self-Service-Bike-System Always at the leading edge of innovation and sustainable development, in 1999 JCDecaux invented a self service bike system known as Cyclocity®. The Cyclocity® system has been patented in May 2001. The first generation was launched in May 2003 in Vienna (Austria): a fully electronical bike rental system with free of charge using. Gijon and Cordoba (Spain) were following. In 2004 a new generation bike was developed. On 19th May 2005, 1,000 bikes were put into use in Lyon and Villeurbanne, and immediately met with real public success. As a real form of individual public transport, Cyclocity® can be adapted to the individual needs of each city irrespective of their dimension. Due to that fact a large number of cities decided to implement Cyclocity®, e.g. Brussels and Aix-en-Provence. The cities of Paris, Salzburg, Toulouse, Rouen, Luxembourg, Amiens, Nantes, Mulhouse, Besançon, Marseilles and Seville have also chosen this new alternative form of transport which encourages travellers to combine different types of transport, makes traffic easier and combats pollution. Cyclocity has been awarded four prices since 2005 : - Trophée du vélo 2005 - Trophée 2005 L’Usine Nouvelle - Janus 2006 de l’Industrie - Prix Entreprises et Environnement 2006. The most successful implementation of Cyclocity®, named Velib´, was in Paris in summer 2007. Vélib' was specially designed for Paris and is the largest ever established self service bike system in the world. 1451 Cycle racks have been set up all over the city to allow subscribers to the system to take one of the 20.600 bicycles from a rack close to their point of departure and to leave it at the rack closest to their destination. In general the network of Cycle racks is organized in 300 m distances all over Paris and strengthened near places generating traffic (railway stations, shopping districts, etc.). The bikes of Velib are used up to 180.000 times a day, since July 2007 nearly 10.000.000 times. It is an automatic system that works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The cost of the subscription depends on its length: €1 for 1 day, €5 for 7 days and €29 for the year. As far as the cost of each journey is concerned, the first half-hour is always free, irrespective of the type of subscription. The second half-hour costs €1, the 3rd half-hour costs €3 and subsequent half-hours cost €4. JCDecaux additionally cares for maintenance and control of the bikes. It will be carried out with 20 clean natural gas vehicles. The staff will travel around using 130 electrically assisted bikes. A barge with 12 stopping points all along the Seine will pick up the bikes in need of major repairs. On board, there will be a bargeman and eleven mechanics to sort out the damaged bikes. JCDecaux guaranties the quality an the availability of velib’. Velib’ is free of charge for Paris and financed by advertising revenues generated from JCDecaux on public grounds.
