To celebrate, the Festival is offering a spectacular array of performances by artists from around the world, including past favorites and new faces. Venues range from locations in Virginia Beach to Downtown Norfolk to the historic grounds of Colonial Williamsburg. Performance tickets go on sale February 19th, and are available online at vafest.org, by phone at (757) 282- 2822, or in person at the Virginia Arts Festival Box Office at 440 Bank St., Norfolk. Here are some of the highlights of the 20th Anniversary Virginia Arts Festival; for a full calendar of events, visit vafest.org. Spring for Dance! No single organization has done more to bring the best of dance to the region than the Virginia Arts Festival; for 20 years the Festival has treated area audiences to ballet and dance companies from around the world. This season, the Festival high-kicks things off with an unprecedented gathering of great dancers under one roof with its Spring for Dance Gala, on April 9 and 10. American Ballet Theatre, Britain’s Birmingham Royal Ballet and Richard Alston Dance Company, Tokyo Ballet, Mark Morris Dance Group, Lula Washington Dance Theatre, and Richmond Ballet will showcase great moments in ballet and dance, from the most romantic pas de deux to sizzling contemporary style. And that’s just the beginning: the dazzling dance continues with Dance Theatre of Harlem, May 14 and 15; the hilarious all-male Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, April 13; and Cuba’s MalPaso dance company, performing with Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble, May 7. 20th Anniversary Virginia International Tattoo The Virginia International Tattoo’s 20th Anniversary show will present the most awe-inspiring performances ever, featuring more than 1500 musicians, performers and military band members from 10 nations. Each year, thousands of visitors from across the U.S. and around the world flock to the Virginia International Tattoo. Now, the American Bus Association, North America’s premiere tour and travel organization, has named the Tattoo the Top U.S. event in North America for 2016. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MEDIA CONTACT: Cynthia Carter West C: 757-274-7370 • T: 757-282-2804 [email protected] A Perfect Storm of Must-See Theater Joining the worldwide celebrating marking the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, the Festival will present a spectacular production of the bard’s most mystical work, The Tempest, performed by the Virginia Stage Company with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra performing the rarely heard score by Sibelius, conducted by JoAnn Falletta, April 16 and 17. Great Music Music lovers mark their calendars each year for Virginia Arts Festival presentations, and the 20th Anniversary season offers great reasons to make it a date. On the classical side, world-renowned cellist and musical adventurer Yo-Yo Ma is joined by the virtuoso pianist Emanuel Ax in concert April 12; the heralded Venice Baroque Orchestra brings glittering, intricate performances of 17th and 18th century music, April 14; and the astonishing young pianist Yuja Wang performs May 11; JoAnn Falletta switches roles from conductor (of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra) to guitarist, and joins the Tidewater Classical Guitar Orchestra on May 18. The Festival will once again bring great chamber artists and soloists including violinist Tianwa Wang, the Miami String Quartet and pianist André-Michel Schub. And there is music for every taste, with R&B legends Boyz II Men, May 22; the sizzling Afro-Cuban All Stars, May 3; and the stars of TV’s America’s Got Talent, the Texas Tenors, May 8. Threading the Delights of the Fringe On more than one occasion, the Virginia Arts Festival has imported performers from the legendary Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland—the place where some of the world’s most unique, entertaining and innovative artists and shows have gotten their start. Now the Virginia Arts Festival is launching its own mini-Fringe, April 28 – May 1. Concentrating the activity in Norfolk’s lively Neon District, Fringe Festival patrons can see the National Theatre of Scotland’s play The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart, April 28-May 1, at the HOH Black Box. The darlings of the New York club scene, the Hot Sardines bring their hot jazz to The Plot, a people’s outdoor park in the Neon District. Enjoy performances from Kishi Bashi String Quartet Live!, Storm Large at Work Release, PUBLIQuartet at Glass Wheel Studio, many more performances including a variety of comedy shows at PUSH Comedy Theater. Before, after and in-between shows, patrons can discover the galleries, breweries and bistros nearby and find themselves lost in the dotMaze: Get Lost! Festival Williamsburg Three days of sun and stars, and most of all, music to remember, June 24 - June 26, on the grounds of the DeWitt Museum in Colonial Williamsburg, plus coffee concerts at Williamsburg Winery.
