Redesdale Hall is available for hire. Please phone Carolyn 5425 3194 Learning about Local Remnant Grasslands In Aboriginal times, this area of Central Victoria was almost certainly more thinly treed than it is today: it was the stretches of open grass- land that so attracted the early settlers for their stock. Today, while much of the agricultural area is pasture, the species that make up the grasslands are very different from those of 200 years ago.

Baynton Sidonia Landcare group is offering a seminar “Remnant Local Grasslands: their composition and finding them” which will look at some of the myriad species that once made up the richness of indigenous grasslands and will include some species identification. We will also be “getting our eye in” for what remnants look like, even if not in very good condition at the moment, and where they are like- ly to be found. This will be followed by some guidance for conserving indigenous grasslands, including looking at the management of stock grazing and possible burning regimes.

Paul Foreman will be presenting the seminar and he is a highly regarded and skilled field botanist and ecologist with over 23 years of experience in land management and nature conservation across a range of sectors and in a range of technical, strategic and manage- ment roles throughout Victoria and many other parts of Australia.

The seminar will be on Sunday 22nd November from 10.00 - 3.00 and will start at the Baynton Hall. An excursion to a local roadside to look at a reasonably healthy grassy ecosystem will probably be included, but will be dependent on the weather.

The seminar is free and lunch is included, but registration is required by contacting Clare on 54 234 152 or email [email protected] by Thurs- day 19th November. The seminar is funded by the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal and the Kyneton Woodland Project which is funded by the Australian Government and delivered by the North Central Catch- ment Management Authority.

Angling for a fun day out?

The North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) is organising a carp fishing competition along the lower reaches of the Campaspe River, from Axedale to Echuca, on Sunday 25 October. The Campaspe Carp Catch will run from noon to 4pm, with five registration, judging and barbecue sites along the river. Carp are the rabbits of our rivers. They are a major component of the Murray-Darling Basin’s fish population and they cause signifi- cant damage to rivers, wetlands and the natural environment. Register at one of our five hubs at noon, grab some lunch and then head out anywhere on the river you like, including your favourite fishing spots. Judging will take place back at the registration spots between 3.30pm and 4pm. The event is funded by Victorian recreational fishing licence fees and is consistent with the State Government’s Target One Million commitment to deliver carp control measures. Advertisement The registration and judging sites are: Charlie Carp • Axedale River Reserve off William Street is the only fertiliser on the market today that can boast • Ayson’s Reserve at Elmore, on Burnewang Road about its enormous benefits • Campaspe River Reserve near the Rochester water tower to the garden as well as the • Strathallan Community Hall on Strathallan Road environment. We are cleaning • Echuca Lions Park at Ogilvie Avenue up the waterways of Australia!

There will be gift voucher prizes for the Best Catch and the Biggest Bag. Bait will be provided and it is important everyone aged over 18 has fishing licences and complies with relevant fishing laws. It is also important everyone has fun, and takes home the message that introduced fish like the carp can damage our waterways and crowd out communities of our magnificent native fish.The- Cam paspe River is a significant environmental asset to Victoria, and is home to a number of threatened and vulnerable native fish. “The North Central CMA has been doing a lot of work in the past three years to improve the health of the Campaspe River, with one of the results being the return of fish such as the Murray-Darling rainbowfish and increased numbers of the iconic Murray cod. The event is part of the North Central CMA’s Caring for Campaspe and Waterwatch projects, funded by the Victorian Government’s Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.

Quote of the week: “When you have to make a choice and you don’t make it, that itself is a choice.” William James (American psychologist and philosopher)

700g sterilised rubber seal jar. Soft fruit (such as strawberries, apricots, cherries, blackberries etc.). 500g cane sugar. 300ml dark rum.

Pick over fruit to remove stones and stalks and slice so that all are roughly the same size. Layer fruit in jar and pour over sugar and rum to fully submerge fruit. Fasten lid and shake gently to distribute sugar. Set aside in a cupboard for at least 6 weeks before eat- ing. Once opened store in fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Serve with cream or ice cream. Smells sweet and alco- holic. Makes a great gift. There’s time to make some for Christmas!

18 BRIDGE CONNECTION Edition 70 October 2015 Community Newspaper for the Redesdale and Mia Mia Region Heather joined Anthony and his crew in mid Anthony’s Amazing Adventure September. He says, “We managed a couple of days overlap with the crew girls (also friends of Heather), then they headed back to Melbourne. Heather and I have left the boat in Las Palmas and we took a ferry to Tenerife then on to La Gomera for the past two weeks.” Heather has since flown home but Anthony and his new crew (more friends from Australia) are now back on the boat getting things ready for departure to the Cape Verde islands later this week. “We will get provisioning finished by 8th and look to depart on 9th. About 800 nm’s to Cape Verdes...4-5 days passage making depending on weather.” Anthony plans to spend a week cruising in the Cape Verdes, where fishing and snorkelling is supposed to be great. They will reprovision in Mindehlo (capital of CV’s), and head off for an amazing crossing of the Atlantic toTrinidad in last week of October. He says, “That is about 2100 nm’s (3800km) and should take 14 days..insh’allah.” Good luck Anthony, we are all thinking of you and your brave adventure. May the sea be calm with a gentle and useful zephyr.

Redesdale resident, Anthony Baird has set off for an adventure of a lifetime. Anthony and his wife, Heather Carmody, live in North Redesdale Road where they have created a fantastic garden and orchard and have recently opened their own winery, Stone Axe. Anthony bought his yacht in 2013 in Denmark, where it was built. It is an X Yacht (that is the brand name), a 45 foot long sloop (single mast) with fibre glass hull. Strong boat and fast hull/ sail set up. He said, “I named the boat Pura Vida...it is a Span- ish phrase mostly used in Costa Rica as a salutation “pura vida!”; as a salutation it means “ have a great life!”. More literally it means “ fine life” or “great life”. It definitely doesn’t mean “pure life”!!!! As it turns out, both the Spaniards and the Portuguese claim it as a Spanish/Portuguese phase and we have been told many times in Spain and Portugal what a good name we have chosen for the boat.” This year Anthony put the boat back in the water in mid August in Benalmadena, on the southern Mediterranean coast of Spain where it had been on a stand since late August 2014. A friend from Melbourne joined him and they sailed to Gibraltar and on to Rabat in Morocco and then across to the Canaries.
