This award recognizes the successful partnerships and projects that ultimately benefit military-connected children. Power Up! Team Holloman has made several connections, including the work of the APS Military Community Liaison (MCL) and the Holloman AFB School Liaison Officer with various military connected student groups throughout the year. Various brochures have been developed and distributed to market the availability of collaborative programs, the DoDEA grants, and existing opportunities. The MCL also has a section on the APS website dedicated to welcoming military families to our community. These webpages contain valuable information necessary to families as they enter the Alamogordo Public School District. Student Representatives from the S2S Program, have attended the awards ceremony each year in Washington D.C. to receive the awards. Power Up! Team Holloman receives 2016 Recognition of Partnership Award S2S Program Alamogordo High School~S2S was chosen to represent the S2S (Student-to- Student) program at the Military Child Education Coalition 16th National Training Seminar in Washington, DC in July 2014! Of more than 325 S2S sites worldwide, only seven S2S schools were chosen to participate at the conference. AHS~S2S was chosen on a number of factors, including their outstanding implementation of the S2S program and the quality and quantity of progress reports pre- sented throughout the school year. This is an opportunity to showcase the AHS~S2S program, but also an opportunity build on leadership skills. Additionally, they had the opportunity to meet and talk to many high achieving individuals who also attended the training seminar. AHS S2S Students with Retired General Larry Spencer, Vice-Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force Frances Hesselbein Leadership Award Daniel Ferenczhalmy, a junior at Alamogordo High School, is one of only 12 students nationwide selected by the Military Child Education Coalition to attend the Frances Hesselbein Student Leadership Program at the United States Air Force Academy this spring. This program was designed to create leaders in the MCEC sponsored Student to Student (S2S) Program, which was created to support transitioning military high school students based on 6 core values: Leadership, Relationships, Academics, Finding the Way, Service, and 100% Acceptance. The FHSLP focuses on identifying students who demonstrate extraordinary leadership potential to participate in a weeklong training, led by senior military cadets at either the US Military Academy or the US Air Force Academy. During the training students will work together to develop and enhance their leadership, communication, and team building skills with the expectation that this experience will enrich and lead to continued growth of each participant's local Student to Student program. Daniel is currently serving as the 1st Vice President of the AHS S2S program and is the fourth student selected by MCEC to represent Alamogordo High School at FHSLP. Walk a Mile in THEIR Shoes April was the Month of the Military Child. To celebrate and honor them, APS Military Community Liaison, Natalie Wimberley, worked with LaurieAnn Goodier Holloman AFB’s School Liaison Officer to coordinate “Walk a Mile in Their Shoes.” The event kicked off at Alamogordo High School with a welcome rally and guest speakers. The mile long walk ended at the APS Administration Complex with refreshments before the monthly school board meeting. During the meeting, several local military connected students were recognized for their outstanding achievements. It was a great show of support for our military children because…“Kids Serve, Too!” Holloman Elementary School won the autographed “Celebration Banner” since they had the most participants at the event. JS2S Has it in the Bag! The JS2S students from all three middle schools have been busy putting together welcome packets for students who come in mid-year. The treat bags are stuffed with mascot Chocolate Bars, welcome letters, pencils, a school bell schedule, school map, and “Top 10” lists of students’ favorite things to do and places to eat in Alamogordo. All middle schools and AHS are developing ambassador programs that will pair new students with a current student in our S2S or JS2S clubs with similar interests. New students will get tours, be paired with lunch buddies, and will get one of these fun, school specific bags.
