Keywords: Ethnobotany, Northern Chin State, Myanmar. INTRODUCTION Human being survives by using the material from his natural environment since human being is evolved on the earth. The plant plays one of the supporting roles on the survival of man from that time to present day. Ever since his appearance on the earth, man used plants as food, medicines, fibres, clothes and shelter, etc. For their basic needs, man obtained from wild plants from flora in his early life, before civilization is appeared. Then man domesticated wild plants to produce the food called agriculture. It has been estimated that about 3,000 species of plants have been used as food by human being throughout history and that about 200 species have been domesticated as food crops. Today plants are not only cultivated for food, but also for other man‟s requirements, such as fibres, latexe and resins, dyes, tannin and drugs, etc.

  • Myanmar Situation Update (28 June - 4 July 2021)
Myanmar Situation Update (28 June - 4 July 2021) Summary Myanmar ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi appeared in the special court in Naypyitaw on 29 June and the court accepted the two evidence documents submitted by the junta for the case charged under Section 505(b) to incite unrest in the country although the lawyers of Aung San Suu Kyi objected. Those two documents are NLD party statements issued on 7 and 13 of February after the NLD’s leaders have been detained. Her lawyer also expects the trial will run longer than scheduled, with the prosecution still to call nearly two dozen witnesses. The junta has been building strong high-tech surveillance tools that can be used for internal repression, many of which come from Western companies. An investigation conducted by the “Lighthouse Reports” revealed that those technologies include high tech software that can extract data from different devices and surveillance over the internet. More than 50,000 Karen people have been displaced since the beginning of the year. Local community groups expect that there is much more the international community can do to help as humanitarian as is not enough meeting the survival of the people who fled their villages and living in makeshift shelters. Indian media also reported that over 700 people from Myanmar, mostly civilians, have entered Mizoram in the past few weeks. Altogether 10,025 Myanmar nationals have so far sneaked into Mizoram following the military coup. Media also reported that the Myanmar military shells struck Magar Yang camp, home to over 1,600 internally displaced persons in Kachin State, along the China border.

  • Chin Human Rights Association
Introduction The following submissions details issues related to Freedom of Religion and Belief (FORB) relating primarily to the situation for the Chin minority/indigenous people in Chin State and Western Burma and in the current context of COVID-19 response and enforcement. These circumstances are however not limited to the Chin people but may also be reflected in the wider context of minority religious/ethno- religious status in Myanmar. National Legal Provisions The 2008 Constitution fails to provide adequate protection of freedom of religion or belief. Article 34 of the 2008 Constitution appears to guarantee freedom of religion or belief for all, but a list of qualifying conditions based on whether the religion does not undermine ‘public order’, ‘morality’, ‘health’ or ‘other provisions of this constitution’ makes it highly restrictive. Ultimately the result is that a vaguely defined idea of ‘public welfare’ trumps freedom of religion or belief in the 2008 Constitution. Moreover, the vague constitutional provision is subsequently contradicted by Article 361 which states ‘The Union recognizes the special position of Buddhism as the faith professed by the great majority of the citizens of the Union’. In applying a ‘special status’ toward Buddhism into the 2008 constitution, policies which discriminate against religious minorities in the name of the protection of Buddhism are legitimated. The Religious Conversion Law, one of the package of bills for the “protection of race and religion,” originally drafted by the extreme religious group, Ma Ba Tha, and subsequently signed into law by President Thein Sein in 2015, was widely opposed as contravening Myanmar’s State obligations as party to the UN Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child are designed to regulate monogamy, marriage, birth spacing, and religious conversion.1 Land ownership for religious purposes remains as discriminatory under the National League for Democracy (NLD) as it did during the SPDC military rule in the 1990s.

Title Land, Livelihood and Change of Family Structure All Authors Nyunt Nyunt Win Publication Type Local Publication Publisher (Journal name, 2nd International Conference on Burma/Myanmar Studies 16-18 February 2018, issue no., page no University of Mandalay etc.) The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between lifestyle changes based on land use and family structure in order to understand the real situation of rural development in Kyaw Detha, Gangaw Township, Myanmar. I utilized particular emphasis on the use of basic ethnographic method. After 1988, in the time of the Revolutionary Council and State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), such land use projects as road construction, construction of railway lines, timber extraction and establishment of oil company as well as Ka-pa-sa factory have increased and the confiscation of farmland of the local farmers have stepped up. In fact, the authorities and the private business persons were the ones who attained a great deal of benefits. Paddy land and farmland decreased and local people owned only small acres of land primarily, and so not all of their Abstract children could receive land as inheritance. Moreover, the Migrant workers in the vicinity came into Kyaw to seek jobs for their living. Thus, Kyaw became a populated place because local people opened stores, food center and other private businesses along the main road. They sold goods to migrant workers (local people called them Zingam a) rather than local people. So, local people changed their careers in order to survive. Now, Kyaw is no longer a village - it became a town in March 2015.
