Schernewski Baltic Sea Research Institute Warnemünde (Institut für Ostseeforschung Warnemünde) Seestrasse 15, 18119 Rostock-Warnemünde, Germany TOURISM AS AN ECONOMIC FACTOR ALONG THE BALTIC COAST In most rural areas along the Baltic Sea, tourism is the most important economical factor. Already in 1993, tourism contributes to about 8 % to the national income (Feige et al. 2000) and it is likely that it has increased since then due to the fact that tourism in general has grown. In many coastal resorts in Germany as well as in Poland, tourism contributes to more than 50 % to the public income and is even the exclusive economic factor (Schernewski & Sterr in press). After the German reunification in 1989, a sharp decline in tourism and the transformation of the entire tourist industry took place. State-run holiday hostels were rebuilt or closed down, camping sites reduced, and commercial private hotels, hostels, and sanatoriums gained importance. But since the early nineties, tourism industry recovered fast along the Baltic Coast of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and growth has been steady. A new record was achieved in 2001 when 19.8 million people visited Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which means + 8.3 % regarding the previous year (Ostseezeitung, February 23rd / 24th, 2002).

    Natur & Kultur als Partner der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung Vorwort 2 Liebe Leserinnen und Leser, die Region Odermündung hat einige versteckte und noch unerkannte „Schätze“ vorzuweisen. Allen voran eine einzigartige Natur- und attraktive Kulturlandschaft mit einem hohen Freizeit- und Erholungswert. Aber auch eine bewegte Geschichte, landwirtschaftliche und handwerkliche Traditionen sowie eine Vielfalt an Bräuchen, deren Spuren überall zu sehen sind, wenn man nur genau hinschaut. Akteure aus den beiden auf der deutschen Seite der Odermündung liegenden Landkreisen Ostvorpommern und Uecker-Randow waren davon überzeugt, dass es sinnvoll ist, diese Stärken als Entwicklungsmotor für die Region zu nutzen. Sie haben deshalb erstmals gemeinsam und kreisübergreifend eine Strategie zur Entwicklung des ländlichen Raums erarbeitet und unter dem Thema „Natur und Kultur als Partner der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung in der Region Odermündung“ im Rahmen der EU-Gemeinschaftsinitiative LEADER+ umgesetzt. Wichtigstes Ziel dabei war, den „Schatz“ unserer Region - die einzigartige Naturlandschaft - zu erhalten und zu verbessern, sie aber gleichzeitig in Wert zu setzen und so die Attraktivität unserer Kulturlandschaft weiter zu erhöhen, für die Einwohner ein liebens- und lebenswertes Umfeld und für die Touristen lohnenswerte Ausflugsziele zu schaffen. Dazu haben 34 durchgeführte Projekte, über die Sie etwas in dieser Broschüre erfahren können, ihren Beitrag geleistet. Unser Dank gilt an dieser Stelle allen, die uns bei der Umsetzung der LEADER+ Initiative geholfen haben. Insbesondere bedanken wir uns beim Ministerium für Landwirtschaft, Umwelt und Verbraucherschutz des Landes Mecklenburg-Vorpommern und den Landkreisen Ostvorpommern und Uecker-Randow für die finanzielle und beratende Unterstützung. Wir hoffen, dass die begonnenen Initiativen zur Entwicklung des ländlichen Raums auch in der sich anschließenden Förderperiode fortgeführt werden und geben als lokale Akteure weiterhin unser Bestes.

Budapest – Vienna – Berlin investigates modernist art created in Central Europe of that period, as it responded to the shock effects of modernity. In this endeavor it takes artists directly or indirectly associated with the MA (“Today,” 1916-1925) Hungarian artistic and literary circle and periodical as paradigmatic of this response. From the loose association of artists and literary men, connected more by their ideas than by a distinct style, I single out works by Lajos Kassák – writer, poet, artist, editor, and the main mover and guiding star of MA , – the painter Sándor Bortnyik, the polymath László Moholy- Nagy, and the designer Marcel Breuer. This exclusive selection is based on a particular agenda. First, it considers how the failure of a revolutionary reorganization of society during the Hungarian Soviet Republic (April 23 – August 1, 1919) at the end of World War I prompted the Hungarian Activists to reassess their lofty political ideals in exile and make compromises if they wanted to remain in the vanguard of modernity.

    Dear Journalist/Editor The Bauhaus centenary year may be over, but the influential art and design movement remains in the international spotlight. Below is an article that in- cludes comments from eminent publications, pointing out that 2019 was a cat- alyst for a new appreciation of the Bauhaus movement. And that interest con- tinues in 2020. Inspired by exhibitions both in Germany and around the world, more and more visitors are planning vacations in BauhausLand, the German federal states of Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. This editorial contribution is, of course, free for use. Bauhaus: Still in the spotlight! BAUHAUSLAND: ATTRACTING NEW FANS In 2019, the worldwide celebrations for the centenary of the Bauhaus focused on the achievements of this influential art and design movement. The range of exhibitions appealed to aficionados, but they also attracted a brand-new audi- ence. Leila Stone wrote in The Architect’s Newspaper: “Bauhaus is architec- ture. Bauhaus is costume design. Bauhaus is textile design. It serves as habitat, provides nutrients and is conducive to forest regeneration, ecosystem stabilization and soil protection. In commercially operated forests, dead wood is often unwanted as it can act as an originator of calamities. Accordingly, efficient CWD monitoring approaches are needed. However, due to the small size of CWD objects satellite data-based approaches cannot be used to gather the needed information and conventional ground-based methods are expensive. Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) are becoming increasingly important in the forestry sector since structural and spectral features of forest stands can be extracted from the high geometric resolution data they produce.

Ecology, Heinrich-Plett-Str. 40, D-34132 Kassel, Germany 2 Norwestdeutsche Forstliche Versuchsanstalt, Grätzelstr. 2, D-37079 Göttingen, Germany With 2 figures and 1 table Abstract: The UNESCO World Natural Heritage national park Kellerwald-Edersee in Germany was investigated during 10 years for its macromycetes. 613 species have been recorded totally. 31 threatened species are listed on the German red list of fungi. 27 species of interest according to the criteria of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), 10 species with nature value on a German scale and 5 species of nature value on a European scope have been detected. Compared to other national parks included in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage "Ancient Beech Forests of Germany" and the "Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians" the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park has fewer tree species on poor soils thus exhibiting lower species numbers. Based on old tree stands and relict primeval forest fragments the forest ecosystem of the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park will develop to near naturalness within a few decades.
