Cross Party Group on the UK Changing Union Annual Report and Financial Statement July 2014 Foreword: David Melding AM (Chair) The Cross Party Group on the UK Changing Union aims to facilitate debates in the National Assembly on the different territorial devolution debates taking place in the United Kingdom, and their impact upon Wales. During the year the group looked at the impact of the Scottish referendum on Wales, what is happening in Scotland with the independence referendum, constitutional conventions, and fiscal and welfare devolution in the UK. As Chair of the Cross Party Group I am grateful to all the Assembly Members who have supported our work. We have also benefited from the expertise of several guest speakers who have given their time most generously. The H’mm Foundation is named after H’m, a volume of poetry by R.S. Thomas, and because the musing sound ‘H’mm’ is an internationally familiar ‘expression’, crossing all linguistic frontiers. This literary venture has already secured the support of well-known poets and writers, including Gillian Clarke, National Poet for Wales, Jon Gower, Menna Elfyn, Nigel Jenkins, Peter Finch and Gwyneth Lewis. -

The Welsh Nationalist Party to 1946
Syd Morgan THE CONSTRUCTION OF A ‘NEW NATIONALISM’ THE WELSH NATIONALIST PARTY TO 1946 This paper reinterprets the development of a ‘new nationalism’ in Wales during the period 1919 (the end of the First World War) to 1946 (the end of the Second World War and the election of a majority Labour UK government).1 The focus is on the building of a new political movement, the Welsh Nationalist Party, as the instrument for the creation of a new, territorially based nationalist ideology. It identifies critical policies and actions by that party which led to its increasing visibility as the carrier of the new discourse. In particular, this analysis seeks to deal with matters of perception and politics of the defined era.2 It also examines if, to use Enric Ucelay-Da Cal’s phrase, the party’s ‘possible clientele […] realise that they incarnate “something else”‘.3 The paper argues that this particular ‘new nationalism’ was very much ‘something else’ and was, contra the accepted historical narrative, relatively successful by the end of this period. It also demonstrated some but not overwhelming success in the ‘task of “nation- building” outside government institutions’.4 The evidence presented here suggests that it is possible to identify seven key actions and party policies between 1919 and 1946 which characterised this new form of Welsh nationalism, distinct from its predecessor variant, which was defined, both then and now, as Home Rule. PLAID CYMRU AND THE GREENS: FLASH IN THE PAN OR A LESSON FOR THE FUTURE? * Beginnings It is worth emphasising that the agreement between Plaid Cymru and the Greens that led, among other things, to the joint campaign's memorable victory in Ceredigion in 1992, was no mere electorally-convenient response to the 1989 European elections. The roots went deeper than that. Welsh nationalists and Green campaigners had forged a harmonious relationship, for example, through the protests of the peace movement. Some time during the 1970s Plaid Cymru and the Resurgence magazine held a joint conference. Leopold Kohr, who became a close friend of Schumacher, prophet of small is beautiful, and an iconic figure of the Green movement, advised Gwynfor Evans and Plaid Cymru on economic policy and promoted the concept of Wales as a self-governing state within a devolved Europe. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s there was abroad a sense of a certain deep-level compatibility between the aspirations of Wales’s national movement and the green movement’s values. For my own part, Blueprint for Survival (1971), the initial manifesto of green politics, immediately struck me as a document of revolutionary significance. Blueprint's message was that what we may term the current western way of life, with its total indifference to the destructive impact of mankind's action upon the natural environment, was inexorably leading the world towards ecological catastrophe that was in turn bound to cause serious degradation in the quality of life of homo sapiens. Broadly speaking, the components of the crisis were loss of biodiversity through species extinction, the ravaging of natural resources (including soil), over-population, and the pollution of the natural world well beyond its capacity to absorb the effects. -

It includes people, places, events, publications, films, books, allies – all of which illustrates our rich queer past. First funded project to explore a history of sexual orientation and gender identity in Wales The timeline is one of the outcomes of a 2011 National Heritage Lottery Funded (NHLF) project Welsh Pride hosted by the charity the LGBT Excellence Centre. It was the first funded project to explore a history of sexual orientation and gender identity in Wales. The culmination of this work was the first Welsh LGBT+ exhibition launched during History Month The timeline was originally intended to 2012 at the Pier Head in Cardiff Bay.
